@andysimms DT Mike Pennel (@TheBeastPennel) will be signing with the NY Jets on a 1 year deal. Was with Packers past 3 season. #Jets #PlayersRep
im feeling like Sheldon will not on the team next year. he's more of the replacement for Sheldon and his issues.
lol me neither. I was saying we will trade Richardson, and this guy is his replacement to get in trouble and suspended
If Richardson was/is around. LOL The following excerpt was after Pennel's first 4 game suspension .. he was again suspended for the final four games of the 16' season. "Once again, the season was barely over before a misstep took place, this time in the form of a four-game suspension handed down to promising young defensive lineman Mike Pennel for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Any hopes the Packers had of Pennel picking up where he left off at the end of the 2015 season were squashed with news of his suspension, which will begin at the start of the '16 campaign. During those four weeks, Pennel will not be allowed to practice or play, although he can continue to train at the facility. Pennel, entering his third season, has been a backup nose tackle and end the past two seasons and has made great strides since entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Colorado State-Pueblo. Last season, he played in all 18 games, starting five, and had 38 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. The four-game suspension means this isn't the first time Pennel has violated the substance abuse program. A player has to be in Stage Two of the program to suffer a penalty as strict as a four-game suspension. The violation could have been for testing positive for a banned substance or missing a drug test. According to the NFL's substance abuse policy, if a player tests positive for marijuana while in Stage Two he "shall be subject to a fine of two-seventeenths (two weeks) of the Paragraph 5 amount in his NFL Player Contract. Because Pennel was suspended four games and not just fined two weeks pay, he either violated his treatment plan, which could have included a prohibition on drinking alcohol; missed a scheduled drug test; or tested positive for a harsher drug than marijuana. The NFL does not reveal which violation was committed." The funny thing is according to sources and Pennel himself the banned substances on each of the violations were of two different categories .. this guy has a history of abuse .. if he stays clean we could have a nice addition to the rotation.
This is a bit of a head scratcher. The guy is huge and clearly slated for NT, however the two suspensions last year make him very vulnerable to further penalties and the next one will be a season long loss. It'll be interesting to see what the terms of the agreement are. He was waived by the Packers and is not listed on OTC as being under contract for 2017. Acquiring other people's problems just makes them your problems.
So far it looks like Macc is trying to be very creative and finding hidden gems, but there's also risk attached. If Pennel violates the S.A. Policy again, he'll be suspended for the season. And I assume that his salary will still count against the cap. Now maybe his salary isn't real high given his circumstance. but it still takes up cap room, and sooner or later that adds up. I hope he works out, but given his track record so far, it seems like a long shot.
I have nothing but admiration for the approach Mac is taking so far in FA. Measurd and controlled. I'm sure he's not going to take on someone who is on his 2nd strike without a safeguard.
Sorry if someone else posted this but this is actually the second time we signed this guy as we picked him up off waivers in February. Guess they saw enuff to take another another chance. We should have plenty of pain pills around if needed.
Don't think mentoring Sheldon is in the cards. More like exit stage left. EDIT: oops, replied before reading your next post
I think that is Mac's normal modus operandi in FA. I believe that he believes in building the team via the draft and uses FA to fill in depth, STs and glaring holes so the Jets aren't forced to have to take a certain position in the draft. The first year was an anomaly because the Jets hadn't been using their cap and had to spend a huge amount to catch up. If the team was a playoff contender, then I think he'd alter his FA philosophy and look to sign better, more expensive players to try to put the Jets over the top. He knows we're nowhere near being a competitor and is trying to do things the right way. With regards to Pennel, I think the cap hit will be minimal. He has a lot of talent. If he keeps his nose clean (literally) and stays out of trouble, he could pay off big time for the Jets. If not, I don't think it will hurt the team or the cap very much. The Jets had two young UDFAs last season (Thomas and Obioha) that showed a ton of promise before getting injured. I think we'll be more than fine on the DL.
