Just throwing this out there - Michael Vick is the best quarterback on the NY Jets roster RIGHT NOW. Regardless of that fact, Geno Smith currently remains the staring QB for the team. Eventually, I believe Vick will claim the starting job and lead the Jets's first team- which is why the Jets should REST Vick during the pre-season! In 2013, rookie-Geno Smith "battled" Mark Sanchez for the starting NYJ job, but the battle was short lived- due to a FOOLISH injury suffered by Sanchez in the pre-season. The Jets' coaching staff put Sanchez in a vulnerable position, which proved to be a fatal error. The Jets should learn from this mistake and protect Michael Vick by resting him as if he ALREADY is the starting QB. Vick has nothing to prove against any pre-season roster-defenses, and he shouldn't be put in any Sanchez-like situations in 2014. The Jets would be wise to treat Smith & Vick as starters, and use this pre-season to evaluate Matt Simms and Tajh Boyd. Just my opinion!
It's pretty obvious that the Jets intentions are to find out if Geno Smith is the long term option at quarterback. He may have a short leash but they're looking for the development factor and if he lasts to week 8 and the Jets are struggling it seems as though there's really no point that late in the season to make a switch to a veteran.
I doubt if Geno last til week 8 if the jets are struggling . We HAVE to make the playoffs this year and were not gonna let Geno ruin that with all the mistakes and turnovers. Vick would be in around week 4 i say if Geno starts off bad ( which i dont think will happen)
There's always plenty of blame to go around when it comes to losses. The Jets stuck with Sanchez (who was historically bad in a number of games) through the first two seasons because the defense had some big issues when it came to their losses. Geno will have to be historically bad this season to be benched after 8 games, no matter Rex's job situation.
By the way, am I the only one noticing that a number of new posters with one or two posts are starting threads like this????
Well that would suck for Rex, but sanchez never had nobody he could get benched for, and neither did Geno until now. Dont say Tebow
I agree with the general premise that the Jets shouldn't risk Vick out there with the backup line very often.
You're assuming that Vick has some sort of prayer of unseating Geno. Vick is here in case of injury. If he wasn't, he'd actually believe he was involved in a QB competition.
Geno will start and if he gets banged up or starts turning the ball over Vick will play. Its really that simple. I do agree that Vick doesnt need to take as many reps as a "normal" back up due to his injury history. If anything the battle between Boyd and Simms for #3 should be the highlight of preseason for the Jets at QB.
I don't think Vick due to performance gets the job unless Geno is really the worst QB this team has had since the 90s. The more the off-season progresses, the more MV is getting backup QB opportunities, and he has been pretty clear that he's never been told he has a chance to win the job. So, unless Geno starts playing like a QB that should never have taken the field in the first place, or unless he is injured, Geno is the starter.
No i know geno is our starter and that who i want starting. Im saying in case of injury or if geno just isn't looking like the future. I say week 4 bc 4 pre season games plus regular season games should be enough to determine who gets the go.
And I'm saying that Geno will need to prove by week 8 (in your assertion) that he will never be an NFL QB for Vick to come in that soon in a season. You don't understand my post, by the way. "Gets the go" indicates that there is an alternate to the starter.
I agree but players need preseason or else they get rusty. If Vick needs to come in early in the year...he needs game experience. I say keep vick out for 2 drives. 2 drives second game...4 drives for the third game.
Vick love is ridiculous Geno has no where to go but up Vick hasn't been stellar the past few years Geno is the guy, he's had ups and downs like most young QBs but only this fan base puts a clock on players after year 1
That was the first thing I looked for when I opened this thread. Only way Vick starts is if Geno is hurt. Vick is made of glass and I'd be surprised if he didn't hurt himself just running onto the field.
