I felt this belongs in the main forum. Move if you wish, mods. Crazy if true. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...lan-to-use-tim-tebow-as-red-zone-quarterback/ We’ve heard a lot about Tim Tebow this offseason, but we still don’t know exactly how the Jets will use him on offense this season. The Jets always say that he’s a backup quarterback, although that’s mitigated by talk about about playing him 20 snaps a game and Wildcat/read-option formations that could grow into something more. The latest suggestion is that the Jets are going to use Tebow as their quarterback in the red zone. Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com reports that team insiders have told him that the Jets will replace Mark Sanchez with Tebow in the red zone in order to bolster the running game. Tebow’s presence would give the team an extra blocker — be it a back or Tebow himself — in the run game and, presumably, make it easier for the team to get into the end zone. The funny thing about this plan is that the red zone was the one area in the field where the Jets offense thrived last season. Only the Lions scored more touchdowns on their trips into the red zone last season and the problem with the Jets was their inability to move the ball inside the opponents’ 20-yard-line often enough to avoid an 8-8 season. Plaxico Burress helped in that department last season, so there’s definitely an opening for a player who can keep things efficient in that part of the field. Unless they do a better job on offense in the middle of the field, though, it won’t wind up making too big a difference.
This would be a TERRIBLE idea if they plan on doing exactly this (and not just using Tebow occasionally in goal line situations)... I feel bad for Sanchez. This team really has showed the NFL how NOT to raise a young QB.
My guess is that Dick is taking some liberties in his reporting here. I wouldn't be surprised if this were the case inside the 5 yard line, but I would be SHOCKED if they pulled Sanchez for Tebow whenever they got inside the 20.
So let me get this straight, Sanchez drives the team down the field, then in the redzone they replace him with Tebow? They don't think this will eventually become an issue? Smh at the jets. This was exactly why I was against Tebow being here.
It's a nice headline to get people to talk such as when Rex said tebow could play UP TO 20 plays everyone ran w/ it that he'd be taking 20 snaps a game away from sanchez. He'll have a RZ package(like Brad had), that doesn't man he's coming in every time we get inside the 20 or 10.
Dump. Just more media speculation and fabrication....the media does not want Sanchez to be the QB...Tebow is a sportswriters dream....They will do anything to pump up Tebow and knock down Sanchez....
Sanchez led the most efficient RZ offense in the NFL last year. I only see Tebow being a benefit from inside the 5.
I could see a play where Sanchez pitches it to Tebow and Tebow starts to run and all of a sudden throws to a wide open Holmes....but taking Sanchez off the field entirely is a mistake.
Tebow's Fantasy Football Value Up Sanchez Fantasy Football Value Down Ah, whatever. Let the speculation and BS reporting begin! Here's an idea: Let's create a new "zone". From today on, I declare the space inside the 5 yard line to be "The Purple Zone" Let's use Tebow exclusively in the Purple Zone. I like THAT idea. Seriously, imagine what old time football players would think of this "Red Zone" crap. And we use it all the time like it's a part of our vocabulary.
Definitely like Tebow for some goal line plays, but not every single one and def not as soon as we get inside the 20.
There's no way they would just automatically swap Tebow in for every play whenever they cross the 20. Like Rex said, they're gonna play it by ear. If Tebow plays are working they'll run more, if they're not working they'll run less. Obviously if we are inside the 5 put Tebow in and have him slam the ball in, but to think the coaching staff would be so rigid as to have Tebow play only and always in the RZ is an insult to our great coach and coordinator.
I agree with you guys that he's probably fudging some details. 5 yards? Go for it. 20? not fair to Sanchez.
as much as I hate Cimini, this article is really the author (Josh Alper), running with a single line in a Cimini post. Here's the original... Camp preview: Quarterback Position: Quarterback Projected starter: Mark Sanchez Projected reserves: Tim Tebow, Greg McElroy New faces: Tebow Going, going, gone: Mark Brunell Player to watch: Tebow will be one of the most closely watched players in the NFL. Why? Because he's Tim Tebow. Another reason is because of his role: What is he? The Jets say he's the No. 2 quarterback and will be used in the wildcat package. They haven't divulged any specifics, but it'll probably be closer to the read-option offense he ran in Denver than a true Wildcat, which is a direct snap to a running back. Team insiders say the plan is to use Tebow in the red zone, where they can replace Sanchez with another player/blocker to bolster the running game. Potential strength: Depth. For a change, the Jets have a legitimate backup instead of an delicate antique. (No offense, Brunell.) Sanchez and Tebow are proven winners with playoff victories on their resumes. That could be a big intangible -- assuming a quarterback controversy doesn't ruin everything. Potential weakness: The obvious concern is the question of whether Sanchez and Tebow can co-exist without dividing the locker room, but we're going to get technical here and raise the issue of ball security. Sanchez had 18 interceptions and 10 fumbles (eight lost) last season, Tebow six interceptions and 13 fumbles (six lost) -- way too many loose balls. Sanchez can reduce the number by cleaning up his mechanics while in the pocket. Wild card: Sanchez's psyche. Comedian Rob Riggle nailed it during the ESPYS telecast when, referring to Tebow and his popularity, looked at Sanchez in the audience and cracked, "Good luck with that all season." Sanchez laughed. Will he still be laughing in a few months? His ability to block out the Tebow distraction will go a long way toward determining how the season plays out for all parties. For the most part, Sanchez has been a mentally tough player, but his psyche was shattered by the end of last season. He needs to take a playoff mentality every week, because he's at his best in the big games. no where does Cimini say that the plan is to use Tebow EXCLUSIVELY in the Red Zone, just that he will have some plays in the Red Zone
Blown out of proportion as usual. I'm sure he'll see some action (as people said in a 3rd and goal situation, maybe) in the RZ but it's not like we get within 20 and Tebow is going to run the offense from that point on. I don't get how this guy still has a job.
I agree with inside the 5 yard line Tebow is a monster, but inside the 20-10 let Sanchez have the snaps.
