BY DAVE HUTCHINSON Star-Ledger Staff HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Although the Jets are sad to see the brilliant career of running back Curtis Martin come to an apparent end, the club will save $9.15 million in salary-cap room over the remaining three years of his contract, The Star Ledger has learned. Martin, who signed an eight-year extension worth more than $41 million (not counting incentives) with a $10 million signing bonus in August 2002, is scheduled to receive a $3.25 million base salary next season and $8.7 million in base salaries in 2008 and 2009. But with Martin's impending retirement, the Jets will save his base salary in 2007 ($3.25 million), 2008 ($4 million) and 2009 ($4.7 million) because base salaries aren't guaranteed and only be charged for the $2.8 million remaining on his pro-rated signing bonus. That charge will come in 2007. Thus, the Jets will save $450,000 on the cap next season (his base salary minus his pro-rated signing bonus). When you add that to the $8.7 million saved in 2008 and 2009 the total reaches $9.15 million. With the extra money, the Jets are expected to delve into the free-agent market this off-season and address needs along the defensive line, linebacker and perhaps running back, depending on what they do in the draft
Wow that is a huge amount. Tannies eyes must be bulging. This will put us in good stead with FAs next season.
The $9.15 million is over the next three years. We're only getting $450,000 in relief next season according to this article. Not nearly enough to go on a shopping spree.
Well...I am sure Tannebaum is going to use his imagination, offer maybe a low bonus and salary the first year of a contract, then can GUARANTEE up to 8.5 million in years 2 and 3 if he wanted to....THATS ALOT MONEY; OR some combination of the above. Also, don't forget he will have Ramsey probably coming off the books next year, probably Derrick Blaylock, and God knows who else....
Does the $9.15M include the $18.95 they will spend at Burger King for his farewell luncheon? Can this be pro-rated?
Well so far hes worked with little or no room at all and been very creative. Mangini guy Mangini guy Mangini guy Mangini guy Mangini guy Mangini guy Mangini guy Mangini guy Mangini guy Mangini guy Mangini guy Mangini guy been sick yet Coach K?
lol i just dont like it cause people buy into it too much. also, "smart hard working players" is what every coach looks for. and to build a championship team you dont mold 22 boyscouts into warriors. in reality im saying a mangini guy should be anyone with talent and without a criminal record. its football, not church.
One point is missed by the article. If Curtis Martin holds off on retiring until March 2, 2007 we can split the 2.8M bonus remaining over 2 seasons, freeing up 1.85M next year.
That could very well be why Curtis said that he's not making any decisions now and that it was wait and see for next year...Wouldn't surprise me in the least.
What are the JETS right now under the cap. I think were somewhere between 10 to 13 million under. Can someone help me out. If this is the case and Tanni can work his magic with this new found money I think we can really make some noice this off season.
IF we offer deals that are 3-4 years and backloaded, because of the cash he's saving us in '08 and '09 we can spend freely....
Free agency is how you get into trouble. I'm not against signing people, but if we go out and blow that 9 million on 2 players we're going to end up like the Skins or something. It's a good 1-2 year fix, but we aren't going to compete for a superbowl in the next 1-2 years probably.
I think Mangini will continue to build through the draft but I'd still like to see some veterans at key positions be added
