I?m real bored so I?ll throw out an early roster topic for giggles.. RB is arguably the deepest position on an otherwise shallow Jet roster. How do the Jets choose to roster this depth in 09 to ensure future options at the position? I don?t see prolonged hold outs coming from Jones or LW, so I?ll assume they are on the team in 09. Shonn Greene obviously will make the team as well. Richardson will round out the group at FB.. I definitely believe the Jets will roster a 5th RB in 09. Below are some of the candidates I see as having a shot at the 5th spot (or potentially even a 6th although unlikely) 1) Danny Woodhead ? I think best chance of making the team. This guy has a ton of speed, and seems like good football character. I think he?ll earn a spot somewhere in the NFL if not the Jets. Case for the Jets though, their only real big play maker is Leon, and I think Woodhead is a good backup to that plan. If he can contribute on punt returns, or show the ability to make big plays with his speed, it will help his chances a lot. 2) Brennan Southerland ? Great prospect to learn from one of the best in Richardson, and maybe fill that role of FB once Richardson is done (likely after this year). Practice squad most likely destination, but if he plays well enough in preseason, might be taken off our squad by another team with FB needs. Again, playing great special teams necessary for a chance. A great FB special teamer could even cut into an LB roster spot. 3) Jehuu Caulcrick - Might have the toughest road this year, as I don?t believe he?s a FB, and the Jets set with both Jones and Greene. Still a very interesting prospect with his size and power. Would like to see more of him this preseason, and maybe use that 2nd year of PS eligibility. Remember, both Jones and Richardson might be gone next year, so it?s a good time to retain the only position we have some depth with. What do you guys think?
i think woodhead goes to the p.s. and sutherland makes the team.i saw him alot we're i'm at and he can e the fb for the next few years
Southerland is a hell of a lead blocker...I could see him becoming a starter at fullback after Richardson retires. As much as I like Caulcrick, the Greene selection basically destroys his chance of making this team as a power back. Woodhead could make the team, but only as a special teamer.
This year Southerland makes the team... he's too good a FB to let go... then next year when Richardson retires we ar going to have him as the starting FB and someone else as the 4th RB (I hope Woodhead)
I think you are correct, but it's not impossible. Clemens, Sanchez, Ainge, and the kid from Harvard. I do think one of the last 2 (Ainge probably) will be cut
i think southerland makes the team. IMO he only went undrafted due to a shoulder injury. which he earned by obliterating blockers for knowshon moreno. hes a throw back lead blocker. the perfect replacement to groom for richardson. everyone holds out hope for jehruu caulcrick (i butchered his name) i think southerland is a better pure FB.
Lots of praise on the board for Southerland. Looking forward to seeing him in action. The problem we face is that Woodhead and Southerland in particular, are too good to last on a practice squad, and we'll likely need them both next year. So how do we roster them? Having 2 FB's is a luxury, as well as a back up change of pace back. Special Teams is the key for both to be a part of the 53, and that will mean stealing from another position, possibly even defense.
Woodhead will probably be on the practice squad. I love how he's battled back from his injury. Can Southerland line up as a situational run blocking TE? It'll help if he can play multiple positions, but we have had multiple FBs in the past.
I don't think so. Undersized - 6'0 and just over 240. Southerland is strictly a lead blocker. I'm hoping he goes to the PS and learns the pro game well from T-Rich. He should be our fullback of the future.
He may not need to go to the PS. We've carried 3 FBs on the roster before. In fact in 1997 we had Richie Anderson, Jerald Sowell and Lorenzo Neal.
With Rex Ryan's power running mindset, it may be smart to carry two fullbacks...especially with Richardson as old as he is.
Do you think he'd have some value on ST? If he's that good i'd rather not risk putting him on the PS and let him learn behind T-rich on the active roster.
being hes a great lead blocker i dont see why westhoff couldnt find a place for him on returns. i really like the idea of Richardson schooling Southerland for a year and him taking over next yr as our lead blocker for yrs to come.
Very true. And like you said earlier, it'll be a great benefit for him to play and learn from Richardson.
