I never really liked Conklin and feel he was overrated by Jets fans. A TE should be able to give you something after the catch. That guy trips over his own feet

I get it though, we’ve had such terrible players at the position that a below average one with decent hands for once seemed good

I am not sure they disagreed, it could be they wanted someone more proven. We wanted someone with more upside, that's what this entire off-season was about. We are not going to hit on all of these signings, but if a few hit, these could be building blocks for future. The fact is, neither of these two players is going to make a lot of money next year by the NFL standards, these are bottom of the market guys. Plus we will likely have a 7th round comp pick as well in this swap. I am fine with with this decision, but we do need another good blocking TE in the draft.

I’m to believe our FO pulled one over on Harbaugh and the Chargers? Really? You want me to believe that Glenn and co are better talent evaluators than Harbaugh? I agree Conklin isn’t very good, but Smartt most likely doesn’t even make an NFL roster if not for us being so bad. Smartt is the Chargers version of Kenny Yeboah.

Maybe Smartt doesn't, but you need to understand the strategy here. Fill the team with young athletic talent and let's see who will emerge. These will be the building blocks for the future. Having a 30 year old TE who cannot block and like you said is not very good, doesn't do much for this plan. Between Ruckert, Smartt, and a rookie, a good young TE who can help now AND in the future can emerge. The goal is to build a sustained winner. Let's see if AG/Mooge's plan works.

I would throw every Jets thing I own in the trash and call it "a day" on my fandom if this team does something colossally stupid as that. It's a DEBATE whether or not that kid is worthy of a SECOND ROUND pick let alone a flippin' first. They Jets do this I can "see" a collective fan abortion taking place.

Then why not have kept Yeboah? He at least has the size for the position, he’s fast and athletic. Unless this kid puts 20 pounds of muscle on in the next 3 months there’s no chance he can be a TE in the NFL. 226 at 6’4” is downright lanky.

They could have. Maybe they liked Smartt more or Yeboah wanted to go to the Lions for similar price. That I cannot tell you.

That won’t happen …. based on what I’ve seen over the years half the fans will say Dart is the next franchise QB, half will throw a fit which will simmer to a grumble by training camp and then hope for the best. About 5% will continually complain and remind us they didn’t want him in the first place as he begins to bust…. Rinse and repeat lol.

For the record the Jets should not draft any QB this year at least not in the first 5 rounds. Find a RT, a DT to pair with Q, a TE and a WR to pair with Wilson. Build depth…maybe just maybe take a flyer in the 6th round on the Syracuse QB or the Indiana kid - forgot their names. Next year when a lot of this dead money comes off and the OL is assumingely solidified is when you look for your franchise QB going forward ….

Pretty much. Although it's much more then 5% on the backend once a pretty fair amount of the "franchise QB" crowd scrambles to pretend as if they never actually supported it as well.

I think the surrounding hype machine pushes Dart into the 1st round regardless what we end up doing though. I can also totally see a repeat of that Atlanta QB pick strategy from last year being deployed by another bad team out there.

The bold is gospel truth around here, but the knives cut both ways, as an example, many all of the sudden professed to be the greatest supporters of Bowers on round one last year while in fact, before, during and after the draft were never seen here with an input. For sure they were some that wanted Bowers at all costs, and I respect that, but we also have so many strap hangers that come after the fact no matter the pick if it turns out good, or bad.

True and hindsight is always 20/20…. most of us knew the talent Bowers had BUT with the Jets OL situation at the time particularly the tackle spots I believe they made the right choice. Unfortunately they only had one first round pick …

Im not sure if Warren will be as good as Bowers…..it’s going to be interesting who they take at #7. It could be TE, WR, or OT again but whichever position they choose they’ll be getting a good player.

Agree completely. The rumors BTW are getting stronger and stronger about the RT Membou, a lineman I love, but would be happy with TE, WR and even a stud D lineman.

At 7 I’m taking Campbell or Banks for me they are the most polished OT. I also think Tet will be in play as we need a possession receiver to pair up with GW. Mason Graham if he falls I could also see being the pick because that kids motor is phenomenal.

Warren would be a reach but if they love him then I get it. I just feel Loveland is closer than many think and he could be had in the second

Membou looks raw and his pass protection is average. Love what he does in the run game though. He’s a bulldozer.

I’d be happy with Mason Graham but I don’t see him getting past the Jags. DT is deep this year - very deep. I can see the Jets getting a starter as late as the fourth round there ….

Thank you for posting this. He would be far and away not only the best TE we have had in like forever but arguably the immediate number two best offensive weapon for the Jets. JF could do some real damage from the back field with him on run plays and RPOs.
