Jets | Pennington contract shifts decision until 2007 Tue, 7 Mar 2006 06:05:35 -0800 Rich Cimini, of the New York Daily News, reports New York Jets QB Chad Pennington's new contract on paper is basically worth $31.5 million over six years, although it's highly unlikely Pennington will see the back end of the deal. The new deal includes a $2 million roster bonus, due on the second day of the 2007 league year. It's a new wrinkle that creates a pressure point, which could make the Jets cut bait or force them back to the bargaining table. Under the terms of the new contract, Pennington will be a tough cut next March because of the salary cap implications. It would eat up more cap room to cut him ($9 million) than to keep him ($6.9 million) in 2007. Pennington did, in fact, take a $6 million pay cut for 2006, reducing his total compensation to $3 million, but the payout is different than how it was widely reported. He received a $2.45 million roster bonus, and his base salary will be a guaranteed $545,000. "It looks like a one-and-done deal," one agent said of the reworked contract. -profootballtalk.com
You still have to prorated bonus money from the previous contract. No matter how you slice it that's going to bite the team if the guy gets cut. I do not believe a renegotiation is going to get rid of that. To me this means the Jets will now most likely take a QB early in the upcoming draft.
LOL, yep I rather not make the playoffs either, or have any hope going into each season. :breakdance:
It's really sad to see how quickly New Yorkers forget the good times. Chad did alot of great things for this franchise, and attitudes like this make me ashamed to be a fan of the same team.
Getting into the playoffs by relying upon other teams like Miami to tank, eliminating themselves, doesn't count for much in my eyes. Only one of our rides to the playoffs in recent years was done on our own accord. What I am saying is that if we could turn back the clock, and eliminate all ties to Pennington, so that we wouldn't be forced to (a) tweak his already ludicrous contract, (b) keep him because it would cost more to toss him and (c) have to deal with further cap ramifications on his ludicrous contract in the coming years, I am all for it. Chad Pennington is not worth 1/4 of what his contract was signed for. Joe Montana probably shivers at the comparison made several years ago, looking at where Chad, Noodle-Armed and Brittle-Boned, is today....
Agreed. Aside from Vinny's miracle season, Pennington's emergence as a QB provided Jet fans with some much needed excitement and hope. While I admit his injuries make it unlikely he will return to his previous form, let us all remember he is a professional athlete in his prime (i.e. good genetics), with the best medical therapy money can buy. Let's see how this season pans out before we throw him under the bus, ok? I'd rather keep him here for $3 million and let him recuperate/teach from the bench then let another team pick him up and rekindle his magic. I say we bring in Kitna as the stop gap, and let Bolly/Pennington fight it out for #2. We have WAY too many holes to take a chance on a QB in the draft this year.
noodle schmoodle... all the guy has to do is increase the weight he benches... he's had the time for therapy. If anyone can do it, Chaddy can!
Dude take your noodle arms comments and shove them, no one cares. Seriously WTF is your problem, do you think he intentionaly hurt himself. You act like Chad is to blame for his injuries, its football, its's a contact sport, shit happens, stop insulting the guy and learn to have some appreciation. God I hate fans like you, bet when we were in the playoffs you were all over his jock now he is hurt and down you piss on him, real nice there buddy.
Hey new guy/kiddie, try and tone it down a bit with the personal attacks. If you could also attempt to keep the profanity out of a post, and use some other means of conveying your opinions, like coherent sentences, it would be most appreciated. Everyone's got opinions on this board, and I am not alone in my assessment that Chad is Toast. He was never a strong armed QB. At one point, he was what one would consider an accurate QB, immobile of course- 2 shoulder surgeries and the fact that he now looks like a deer in the headlights, guiding opposing D's with his eyes, lead to my conclusion that he doesn't belong on the team anymore, much less in a starting role. This new regime is all about rebuilding and finding new talent, even at the expense of talent from within. You might think that Chad still has it in him, I think that he doesn't. Does it make your opinion any less than mine? No, see, that's the beauty of an opinion, everyone can have their own. When you start force-feeding me some Chad-humper stories, that's where I start to take issue. God is a football fan??? I figured him for Cricket or Bocce.
I am definitely tired of all these "noodle-arm" comments. Chad has played with injuries to his throwing shoulder for two straight seasons now. Of course his arm strength isn't going to be that great. The guy is not Superman... You cannot judge a player based on his arm strength while he played through a shoulder injury. Before his shoulder got hurt, he may not have had the strongest arm in the world, but it was definitely adequate enough for the NFL. Given enough rehab time, he should be able to get a sufficient amount of strength back in his arm to be competitive. Chad brings alot more to the table than his arm strength or lack thereof. He is a natural leader, and his determination cannot be matched by any player I can think of. Chad led us to within a field goal of the AFC championship game after playing half the season with a torn rotator cuff. If he can do that after all the media pressure he got that year, I will take him with a healed shoulder and significant rehab time anyday.
I like Chad, nice guy, swell fella, but he is not a NFL QB. Once teams figured out he didnt have the zip to get the ball to the outside anywhere downfield, he was done. He is accurate, and he is smart, but he does not have ALL the tools of a franchise QB, but he does have the pay of one which is killing us. I want my QB to be able to throw the ball deep, without bringing rain. Dont forget the Jets used to be known for the long ball. The Bomb was an artform for Joe Willie, Maynard, and Sauer. Great D, Great runners, and the bomb. God I wish we could get back to that.
As you see your sooooooooooo in the minority, and you think becuase you have 2000 posts that means anything? All I see in every post from you is noodle arm, thats brillant commentary. Anyone can type noodle arm 2000 times. Dude please get over yourself. I am done, I hope you are too. :jets:
Not an NFL QB?? NFL teams have him "figured out?" You say that as if he's been playing his whole career with tricks up his sleeve. When he's in there, he is very effective. Just look at his W-L record and his over 90 career QB rating.
Didnt take his whole career only a few games to see that he is easily picked on out routes. Show me #1 WR numbers from anyone that he QB'd for. McCariens had a huge YPC when McNair threw it to him. Moss has looked good in Washington. Chad just doesnt have the full arsenal to assault a defense. Chad has skills but arm strength is not one of them.
What about the year he had with Coles? I think with Chad all we recall is the last two seasons which were bad as we all know. Prior to that I remember a lot of zip on 20+ yard passes, granted he does not "bomb" passes but he is not exactly a slouch. I remember the ESPN team, on a Sunday night broadcast (a LONG time ago) mentioned that he was one of the most accurate passers in the league 20+ yards. Reguardless of arm strength, Chad is a winner, all through college and even in the NFL. What does arm strength mean when you can't win game, see Kerry Collins...
Someone pull up the numbers, I dont know them off hand. He had a nice year with Coles, but was Coles in Hawaii? Was he top 5 in any stat for WR that year. I am a BIG Coles fan, and I think he can be top WR but without the deep threat our passing offense is flawed.
