The New York Jets have released TE Chris Baker. The announcement was made by Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum. Baker, a third-round draft pick (88th overall) for the Jets in 2002, played in 99 games, starting 50, in seven seasons with the team. He logged 145 career receptions for 1,505 yards (10.4 yards per reception) and 12 touchdowns. Baker started 13 games in 2008, catching 21 passes for 194 yards. we all expected this to happen soon.the move adds 2 million dollars of cap space. on geico sportsnite on SNY they said we are 20 million under the cap,if thats true which i doubt we may have some leverage to throw the sink at one elite player http://www.newyorkjets.com/news/articles/show/2865-jets-release-te-chris-baker
I like signing big names as much as the next guy, but I don't want the Jets to become "Yankee-like" in their approach to the off season. I'd prefer to see them pick up 5 or 6 good role players rather then 1 stud personally. Glad they got rid of his salary. I think Keller is the answer for us at TE. No point in having a $3mil backup.
Hello Baltimore we have a sink on hold for one of your linebackers please call us back at 555-J-E-T-S
true , i believe this so far is our best off -season since the new millenium lol. hopefully we can pick up a decent blocking tight end in the 5th round as others have mentioned here.
Baker is so overrated. He is such a tweener. At this point I'd rather have Betch at least he can block.
Ah, can't believe how many supporters he had. I was for a few years but fuck off, he did nothing for the duration of his whole stint here and eventualy you recognize hype from produce. Bye bye Baker you fuckin' whiner...
Guess you never heard of blocking. Hate to say it, but if both Baker and Moore are cut and quality replacements are not found, say goodbye to the running game of 2008, say hello to the running game of 2007.
This theory doesn't hold up. In 2007, Mangold ( a rookie), Moore, Anthony Clement and Baker were all stationed on the right side of a horrid blocking line. Damian Woody in for Clement was the only change made on that side and suddenly this became a top notch unit. This tells me that Woody, the development of Mangold into a Pro Bowl center and Callahan's coaching were the key elements behind the line's resurgence, not Morre and Baker.
Not a good move! This guy will be a dolphin and Catch the passes thrown to him that weren?t as a Jet. Underutilized, Underappreciated. How could anyone hate on Chris baker the Touch down maker? It is what it is!
Couldn't have said it better myself. Do like the Pats did, find guys that fit the mold of what you want your team to look like. Then let them know you either play your ass off, or we'll kick your ass out!
Baker is an average, all-around TE. I don't see how people can get too upset about losing 21 receptions a season. That's definitely not worth 9M over 3 years. And as to his blocking, a 6th round TE could do that. So I don't see Baker having some incredible worth to this team. That being said I would like to see him re-signed at the vet minimum or something similar. Baker is a solid player and I'd like to keep him on the roster at a reasonable salary. It would be great to see a lot of sets with both Baker and Keller on the field at the same time. As to Baker going to the Dolphins - it won't happen. They already have two good TE - Anthony Fasano and David Martin. Between the two they caught 65 passes and 10 TD last season. Parcells liked Fasano so much he traded for him with Dallas so Fasano is one of Parcell's "guys". He's not going anywhere.
Come on guys Chris Baker was a below average TE. Statistically speaking he basically sucked. He demanded top 10 money and produced nothing. This was a signing mistake they made good for in the end. Agreed with you. I think they may bring him back after he tests the market. Baker is a solid blocking tight end with good hands but he lacks the speed to be anything more then an average tight end. I think Bakers agent wanted to see what he can get on the open market and I'm sure he will be disappointed.
The NYJETS made a mistake never say never theres other foolish teams out there more foolish than the NYJETS.
