Yeah we went heavy on Offensive Line in this past draft, but we clearly need some more big guys up front. You can never sit on your laurels at this position and I think we need to add a minimum of 1 OL in each draft, regardless of need. This year we know we are going to have to replace Pete Kendall in the next couple years so an offensive guard would be a huge get and coudl help push to pile to open up running lanes. Right Tackle could be a place we target also. The beauty of these positions is that we by no means need to draft a prospect early because these positions a) can usually be filled in the later rounds and b) have solid players manning them now which would give the players a couple years to grow if need be. I want to hear about sleeper prospects who will be available in rounds 3 or later, but also the guys who are fringe players that might slip through the cracks for one reason or another (think Justice, Jean-Gilles, McNeil). All three of those players were ast round possibilities and fell, the teams that got them got great value for them and this should be kept in mind when thinking of potential players.
Thomas is the best O-lineman in the draft but 1. OT isn't a big enuf hole to take in first round 2. unless don't win another game for the rest of the season he will be gone before your pick
Name: Kyle Young School: Fresno State Position: C/OG Height: 6'5" Weight: 328 lbs Projected Round: 2nd Scouting Report: Kyle Young has steadily improved as a Bulldog, to the point that he is now considered the top center in all of college football. He went from a freshman AA, to 2nd team All WAC as a sophomore, and 1st team All WAC as a junior, and now heads most preseason All American units. As a center, you cannot find a better prospect. Young possesses all the physical qualities you look for, along with all the intangibles. He has excellent size, and the strength to dominate players at the point of attack. He also shows the athleticism and agility to get out and block on the move. Young is as durable as they come, having started 39 straight games for the Bulldogs. With his experience and intelligence, he should be ready to start from Day 1 in the NFL. With his size and talent, he also brings the versatility to play guard at the next level, and has actually worked out at tackle in practice during his college days. It is definitely nit picking, but the only flaw with Young at center is that he may be a bit tall, and comes out of his stance upright at times. Kyle Young is a rarity: He?s a legitimate first round center prospect. He has the size and talent to play multiple spots, and is NFL ready. Young may have many trips to Hawaii in his future.
I think Ben Grubbs or Josh Beekman would be excellent second round picks. Lets face it here, it'd be nice to get three defensive players, but we can't ignore the whole that will open up when Pete Kendall trails off next year. We have to build through the trenches and let stars emerge elsewhere. If we keep blockers off Vilma, and open up holes for Houston/Washington, then they will make plays. It's getting guys to do that which is the tough part.
That is an excellent point. Also, even if Kendall doesn't trail off next year, we could always upgrade the RG position.
I think they can address the line with 2 mid round picks and a free agent pickup. I'm kind of against taking offensive lineman in the first round but I think Brick and Mangold were so good that they actually had high first round grades so it was worth it. I could see the Jets signing a right tackle and drafting two guards in the middle rounds to coach up.
I agree with your theory but would rather draft a Right Tackle, a big burly road grader type and also a Guard who is more of a universal player, maybe can swap between the right and left side and play some center in a pinch. Tackle - Brick, Jones, Clement, Rookie Guard - Kendall, Moore, Rookie, Teague Center - Mangold, Teague
