http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...19/2009-08-19_jets_looking_to_make_trade.html Jets looking to make trade for wide receiver with Brandon Marshall, Dwanye Bowe on radar BY Rich Cimini/DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Wednesday, August 19th 2009, 4:00 AM CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Jets are known for making deals in August - remember some guy named Favre? - and they're thinking trade once again. They're exploring the wide-receiver market and have held preliminary discussions with a few teams, according to NFL sources. Although he's not officially on the trading block, the biggest name on the Jets' radar is the Broncos' Brandon Marshall, who has issued a pay me-or-trade me demand. The Broncos reportedly have no interest in trading Marshall, 25, one of the top young receivers in the league, but they also said the same thing about quarterback Jay Cutler - and now he's playing for the Bears. Because of off-the-field issues, a surgically repaired hip and enormous contract demands (he's entering the final year), Marshall would be a risk for any team. But there's no denying his talent: 206 catches and 2,590 yards over the last two seasons. At 6-4, he'd be a much-needed target in the red zone for the Jets. While they consider Marshall a long shot, they're not about to summarily dismiss it. The Jets have one of the most inexperienced receiving corps in the league, the reliable Jerricho Cotchery and four other veterans with a combined total of 110 catches. The organization doesn't believe the picture is as bleak as some are painting it, but it wouldn't mind adding a proven playmaker. If the Jets do add a veteran, it probably won't be a free agent such as Marvin Harrison. Another name to watch is the Chiefs' Dwayne Bowe, a former first-round pick. He caught 86 balls for 1,022yards on an awful team last season, but he's had a difficult transition under new coach Todd Haley. He may have played his way out of the doghouse with five catches in the preseason opener, but the Chiefs are rebuilding and will move a player if he doesn't fit their long-term plans. The Giants are another team that bears watching. They have a glut of receivers, and the Jets are wondering if one, perhaps Sinorice Moss, will become available. The Jets are looking for a consistent threat other than Cotchery. Chansi Stuckey is slated to start opposite Cotchery, with Brad Smith the No. 3 wideout, but the flavor of the week is David Clowney. He caught three passes for 102yards and a touchdown in the opener. "He stepped up big-time in that game," Rex Ryan said yesterday. "I think that was huge. We all know he can do it. He's got that blazing speed. It wasn't necessarily a surprise. You guys saw it last year (in the preseason) ...but it was good for me to see with my own eyes." The receivers have been dealing with the speculation since the draft, when the Jets tried to trade up for Percy Harvin. Then came the rumors about Plaxico Burress, now an afterthought because he's reportedly facing a long suspension. Cotchery doesn't believe they need another veteran. "I'm leading these troops right now," he said. "I think we have the guys to get it done. We have some talented guys." The players and coaches are buzzing about speedster Aundrae Allison, whom the Jets acquired Aug. 5 on waivers from the Vikings. "I always call him '88 and out the gate.' He can fly," Ryan said. "I'm just waiting for them to throw him a ball. I'm like, 'You know, he's open. Eighty-eight is open again.' I'm just waiting for our quarterbacks to realize that." Ryan can talk all he wants, but GM Mike Tannenbaum has a reputation for making deals in the preseason. In recent years, the Jets have acquired Pete Kendall, Ty Law, Kevan Barlow and, of course, Brett Favre. Chances are, Tannenbaum will strike again.
I'd be interested in getting either. Marshall is a brawler at WR. He's a physical presence and he can stretch the field, a good compliment to Cotchery.
If we trade for Marshall, we gotta give him a new Deal, and we gotta get the Deal with Leon done, before we throw that much money at someone else. I really like Bowe, young, good size, nice hands and runs great routes, I?d actually throw a 1st at him. Moss would just be another talented young guy, who didn?t prove anything yet.
I'm sure everybody has expected this was the plan. Currently the Jets are 10 million under so they can really pay for anybody if they can pull off a deal.
We definitely don't need Moss whose another midget receiver at 5'8 and has yet to do anything in his 4 years in the league.
If he has hands, speed, and can run good routes, I don't care who it is. Well, I don't want an old timer coming in here though, enough with that non sense.
KC has Bowe listed as third string on their depth chart. Too bad they wouldn't trade him as a 3rd stringer.
While I realize that the Jets don't draft for need, why do we always find ourselves trying to patch holes in August that weren't addressed in April? If we keep trading several DP's for one player, we'll never develop the depth we need at ANY position. This may be one time that Tanny needs to just sit tight and hold what we have. This team is not one player away. Certainly not one WR away so why overpay for a Marshall who would bring both instant credibility and instant controversy by pissing off both Washington and Jones should they sign Marshall to the money he's asking. How do you justify paying Marshall and not paying Washington or Jones. Tanny couldn't possibly be stupid enough to set up yet another Pete Kendall senario.
They have already offered Washington a higher contract than he is worth right now and Jones will be let go at the end of the year.
I agree. While it would be nice to upgrade the WR position it's time for tanny to start drafting for depth and stockpiling picks.
You have a fair point, but in the FO defense, you would have to agree that most of these picks have been gold. Revis was a great move, Harris was a great move, and Sanchez has yet to be proven as well as Greene. But yes, eventually, they have to sit and draft multiple picks to build depth. At that time in the draft, they saw a player they knew they wanted, and went for it.
I agree, they are trying to deal with Washington, he just wants starter money. I believe Greene was brought in to replace Jones.
From your mouth to God's Ears!! I know entirely too many Giants' fans that insist Moss is an asset at the WR position. He was drafted as high as he was because his brother had a great year for Washington and he ran a great 40. His college career was not impressive and his NFL career has been more of the same. He's been given many chances and has yet to make any discernible impression in a real game (I'm not counting 2 TDs against the Seahawks injured and 32nd ranked passing defense). Essentially he's David Clowney plus a few years of experience and minus having ever done anything impressive in the pre-season.
I'll pass on both. Marshall seems to be a head case and add to htat an in jury concern. And although Bowe had a really good year last year, I can not get out of my head that on draft day '08 Mike Mayock came right out and said the guy is not smart enough to grasp anything beyond runningn the basic pass routes. Yeah he had a good year in the scaled down "basic" offense the Chiefs ran due to their starting a rookie QB in Thigpen.
