Posted by Mike Wilkening on February 19, 2014, 10:09 PM EST The Jets are reportedly interested in bringing back one of their primary tight ends of the last two seasons. According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, the Jets have talked to prospective free agent Jeff Cumberland about a new contract. Cumberland, 26, caught 26 passes for 398 yards for the Jets in 2013. He led the club in TD receptions (four) last season. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Cumberland has shown some field-stretching ability in the last two seasons, with 13 catches of 20 yards or more in this span. According to Mehta, the club likes Cumberland’s upside. Kellen Winslow, who led Jets tight ends in receptions in 2013 (31), is also slated to be an unrestricted free agent. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/02/19/report-jets-jeff-cumberland-talking-about-new-deal/
I like Cumberland and would like to retain this guy, and I keep waiting for him to become that consistent middle of the field threat. Maybe he won't become that, but would be solid in a platoon at TE at the least. Definitely bring him back and see if he progresses without having to learn a new system for the first time in his career.
Great move. He will be a guy that you can have for cheap that will do wonders as a number 2. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
With Fred Davis screwing up in Washington, it looks like he may be getting released... Would you guys take a shot on him?
No, for the reason you just said. He had a suspension some years back for failing the drug test, now he failed it again. Not worth the hassle when you have an upcoming draft class with some solid TE talent in the few up top
Whilst Cumberland is nothing amazing he is solid and has good hands. I would like to see him back on the team as well.
I like Cumberland but I expected more out of him coming into this season. I'd still like to see him back but TE is a big need.
Take care of your own at a decent price. The possibility of a 2TE set with Cumberland and Ebron holds some allure.
It still bothers me that Kellen Winslow had more catches then him (despite being suspended). Cumberland could be a decent #2 - if we resign him hopefully it's for cheap
I like Jeff and think hes a very serviceable TE, but he seemed to shit the bed during the season when he seemed to become Geno's primary target. One year deal please, not sold on anything else.
I'd be ok with Cumberland coming back, but the Jets have got to get a complete #1TE . I'm sick of these no block TE's we always seem to have.
Hopefully we are thinking of Cumberland in a depth only way because we need some serious new blood at TE
THIS. if thats how we end up at the TE position by the end of day 1 of the draft i would be ecstatic. a very solid 1-2 punch at TE.
