Thomas went from being the #1 best tight end prospect coming out of high school to now a late round NFL QB prospect. What's interesting about Thomas is that he went to VA Tech expected to play TE and always saw himself as a TE. It's the coaches that approached him to play QB. In a day and age where guys go directly or transfer to schools just so they can play QB, this guy had to be asked. While this change may have been best for VA Tech, it might not have been the best thing for Thomas' pro aspirations. VA Tech essentially converted a blue chip TE into a below average QB. In addition to once being the best tight end in the nation, the 6-6 260 Thomas has a basketball background which seems to be a prerequisite for a great modern day TE. Here was a scouting report of his coming out of high school along with some of his own thoughts on his game.
It is something we would take a chance on. His attitude seems right for it. I wonder if he'll work out as a TE in the pre draft process.
Would be a great mid round developmental pick. Gates, Graham, Ladarius Green, Julius Thomas, all Jordan Cameron all came from a similar mold. The fact that he played TE in HS and has seen things from a QB's POV puts him ahead of those guys developmentally.
Thanks for sharing Legs - I have not followed his career enough to know these things. I just thought he was always a below average QB. Just for curiosity - Has he said anything about the position change in recent years? Sounds to me like they damaged his career in a way..
You take a chance on this guy as a project as long as it's as a FA. You don't use a valuable draft pick (especially this team) on a longshot like this at a position that he didn't even play in college. That's a waste of a pick. But as a FA, sure I'd give him a look. Furthermore if you watch Thomas play he's going to have problems in the pros. He may have good straight line speed but he's not quick. He was also a very mediocre college QB.
Good question. I wasn't able to find anything. Not sure if he still sees himself as a TE or if he's now got the Tebow complex in his head of "must be QB, must be QB, must be QB..." The same goes for his attitude, he came in as a team player willing to do anything short of playing defense for the benefit of the team. I doubt that he would have gone full blown diva in the past 4 years but you never know. I will say this; there are mixed views in the scouting world regarding whether or not he should make the position change or remain a QB. Mcshay for one still thinks he could be a good QB while Gil Brandt, for example, believes he should be playing TE. His off-season will be very interesting for sure.
The JETS need immediate impact players on offense not another guy that will have to make a position change...especially from a QB that really isn't that good. If he is even considered because of a good combine or pro day, draft him in the fifth or sixth round.
He should. Its in his best interest. He's not going to play QB in the NFL. At least at TE, his athleticism an be utilized. Jimmy Graham had almost no college experience... At 6'6 260, he's not far off in terms of size either. Interesting idea, especially if he works out at the position and has good hands. Id love to see him go to the senior bowl and practice as a TE.
I say draft as many of these guys as possible you can't teach athleticism and in the low rounds thats where you draft. The Jets have chosen workout warriors high (Vernon Gholston and Stephen Hill) high and its bitten them in the ass, choose for sure football players high and in the lower rounds take your chances with the athletes. I want Colt Lyerla and Logan Thomas, double up and it might pay off big time.
Jets have had mixed luck w/ former QBS projecting to other positions. Brad Smith being the real success story..while Scott Frost & Anthony Thomas didn't exactly pan out. That said I don't think it's a dumb philosophy. W/ former Qbs you know you are getting someone who understands the game, is a leader & generally has some football instincts. I like Logan Thomas as a late round gamble. Also like Jordan Lynch to make a position change though I haven't read if he is open to switching out of QB
Interesting. What's also interesting is that besides the "QB smarts" you mentioned, Logan Thomas has played the position and at the very least does have the physical package. As for Jordan Lynch, again interesting now that you mention it. I didn't think of Lynch mainly because I didn't look past him outside of a QB prospect (and don't think he'd pan out because of his arm). But now that you mention it, the guy is good running with the ball and his hands. A Jullian Edleman hybrid "get the ball in his hands" type?
Yeah I think you could use him in alot of different roles. Very unique body type capable of alot of things as a ball carrier. Now we don't know if he will be open to a position change. Also have to see him take a few hand offs & catch a few.Does he have natural hands?
