Updated: Bulger to miss at least 2 weeks with fractured pinky finger

X-rays revealed that St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger suffered a small fracture in the pinky finger of his throwing hand during Monday morning?s practice. He will miss at least two weeks, coach Steve Spagnuolo said, meaning Kyle Boller will start for the Rams against Atlanta on Friday and at Cincinnati on Aug. 27.

?There?s what I?m going to call a small fracture in the pinky finger,? coach Steve Spagnuolo said following Monday afternoon?s practice. ?But it?s not displaced which is a good thing. . . .You can?t cast it. You don?t do anything to it. He?ll just tape it. We?ll keep him immobolized with the finger for a couple of weeks, and we?ll see where we are after that. He won?t do very much for two weeks just to be on the safe side.?

Bulger suffered the injury taking a snap during the morning practice, which was held indoors at Rams Park due to morning rain. He stayed in for a couple of plays after that, and then left the field for several minutes. He returned to watch the end of practice, with Boller getting all the work with the starting offense.

Bulger came out for the afternoon practice, which was held outdoors, with his ring and pinky finger taped together. He stayed close to the quarterbacks and the offensive unit for most of practice, but got no work other than stretching. During a special teams session, Bulger adjourned to the sideline to work with strength and conditioning coach Rock Gullickson. (Bulger did stationary bike work, and then light lifting of free weights with both hands.)

Bulger was not made available to the media after practice. He jogged into the locker room holding his helmet with the injured hand.

So for the rest of August, and possibly longer, it?s Boller at quarterback. The former first-round pick by Baltimore was signed as a free agent by the Rams in early April.

?It?ll be an opportunity for me to get out there with the ?1s,? and that?s what they brought me in here for, in case something like this happened,? Boller said. ?Hopefully, we can go out there and not miss a beat.?

Playing three series total in the second and third quarters Friday against the New York Jets, Boller completed three of nine passes for 25 yards and a 42.4 passer rating. On is best drive, he led the Rams to a late second-quarter field goal.

Sure, its just a pinky, but the Jets were gunning for him all day. This defense (and the team overall) has gotten me excited!

As for Bulger, he will keep his job. I don't think Boller can beat anyone out.

We had good pressure on the QB when the starters were playing. I don't know how much to read into that, but it's obviously more encouraging than no pressure on the QB.

Maybe we softened it up for the eventual fracture. We caused a pre-fracture.

Excuses. The Jets caused it for sure. :) Did you see those hits?

Haha, I thought it was a cool title for a thread too. Its really just a Bulger hurt thread, thus I put it in the NFL Forum.

I am surprised Boller did so bad on Friday. Anyone remember that one game when he played great vs. the Jets? It was like his only good game ever.

I think the first victim was Rams guard Jacob Bell. Bart Scott knocked him out.

Yup, I commented on that earlier in the Gholston thread. It was a sick hit, that dude went straight to his hand and knees and just sat there staring at the ground for about 15 seconds.

Screw Sanchez's throw to Clowney. That was my favorite play.
