I was bored between studying for exams and writing papers, so I decided to take a lil' break and daydream about next week's events. Draft fever has been infecting my mind for the last few weeks now, so maybe sharing my idea would be a fitting remedy. I tried to make it seem as plausible as possible, attempting to fit in players that would be compatible with Mangini's philosophy and the team needs. So here I go: Round 1: 4. Jets trade their #4 overall to the Arizona Cardinals for the #10 and #41 overall picks in the draft. Draft value chart says: #4 (1800pts) ~ #10 (1300pts) + #41 (490pts). - Dennis Green gets a franchise QB (either Leinart or Young) by leap frogging in front of the Oakland Raiders. Kurt Warner did a somewhat decent job last season, but Leinart or Young would provide them a QB for the future. Could you imagine one of them passing to that incredible WR corp? - I think Mangini will favor trading down if Mario Williams is off the board. How can he pass on one of the Big Three QBs? Matt Leinart's glitzy persona and mediocre arm strength may deter the FO from using a #4 pick on him. Young has incredible talent, but seems to be an idiot, so that definetly raises red flags. Jay Cutler would be a reach at #4 overall. Why not D'Brick? He would definetly help the team, but O-Linemen can be found in later rounds. At #4, a teams needs to pick an impact player. 10. Jets select Haloti Ngata, NT <via Arizona Cardinals>. After seeming to make the switch to 3-4, Jets are in dire need of a big man in the middle to keep blockers off undersized Vilma. Ngata has amazing mix of size and athleticism. It may take him a year or two playing behind Kimo von Oelhoffen (projected NT), but he'll be a force in the run defense. 29. Nick Mangold, C. Trey Teague will probably be a hold-the-fort guy until Mangold is ready to play. Once that happens, we'll have ourselves a top center for years to come. Mawae won't be missed for long. Round 2: 35. Jets select Bobby Carpenter, LB. This guy is intelligent and very versatile. Mangini can move him all around on the defense to give offenses headaches. Carpenter is definetly a playmaker and can be a big factor in blitzing schemes. He's abit underrated having been overshadowed by fellow teammate AJ Hawk. 41. Jets select Joseph Addai, RB <via Arizona Cardinals>. I'm really high on this guy. He's a powerful runner with decent speed and wills his way for extra yards. He's a threat to catch out of the backfield, and he's not afraid to take a lick. His blocking skills are also an additional plus. He'll be a great successor to Martin. Round 3: 71. Jets select Andrew Whitworth, OT. This guy is a nasty mauler, who'll have an impact on our run game. He's a smart blocker with solid technique, so he shouldn't be that big of a project. He has mediocre pass protection skills, but has trouble with speedy edge rushers. Will probably fit in nicely as a road-paving RT. 97. Jets select Kellen Clemens, QB. <compensatory pick> I'd prefer Brodie Croyle, but I haven't heard that the Jets interviewed the kid. Clemens has been probed and prodded by the FO, and seems to be a smart, gutsy QB. Other than that, I don't really know much about him. According to what I've read, his arm ranges anywhere from medicore to strong and accurate, so I don't really know what to make of it. RECAP 10. Haloti Ngata, NT 29. Nick Mangold, C 35. Bobby Carpenter, LB 41. Joseph Addai, RB 71. Andrew Whitworth, OT 97. Kellen Clemens, QB
Many may not agree, but this is probably the most intelligent mock draft I have seen on this site. Great post
I don't like Mangold w/ #29 there will be a OT there to use that pick on. Carpenter won't make it to 35. I like Maurice DRew better than Addai. Clemens will be gone.Other wise great.
Well first of all, the trade is unrealistic IMO. It makes some sense, but it's unlikely to happen. Arizona has too many needs still. And plus they could also grab a QB at #10. I don't like the Addai pick either. But that's a great trade for us and I love each one of the picks  except for Addai...
What's wrong with Addai? I think he'll become a solid starter. He may not be a flashy, elusive back, but he doesn't necessarily need to make people miss when he can just steamroll over them. He's passionate about the game, plays with heart, and has the fundamentals down. He's also versatile and a team player in that he can catch out of the backfield and isn't afraid to deliver blocks for others. I hate to say it, but he sounds like a "Mangini guy".
 Yeah, yeah. Deal with it. I was actually debating about whether I should include that or not. If it helps any, I cringed as I typed it.
You never start a rookie NT, most interior defensive lineman take a minimum year to learn how to handle 30 year old guys with amazing technique. I doubt Kimo plays NT, he certainly could play some plays there but his position is RE in a 3-4 and he's one of the best. As much as I like Addai why doesn't anyone look at his history of injuries? For a running back that should be a glaring red flag. The last thing I want is a running back that's always hurt. Also, no mock draft should include a trade down. It's a pipe dream. So few trades taken place in the top 10, sure it's possible but until something happens you have to make a mock draft with the current drafting positions. Finally, everyone needs to stop with the man love for Mangold. Taking a center in the first round is not necessary. Even if they take him he won't start this year. The 29th pick should be used on a offensive tackle or pass rusher depending on who they take with the 4th pick.
I scribbled in Kimo von Oelhoffen as the tentative NT since there isn't any other player on the roster that could handle the position. Pouha may have the size, but I don't think he's really any good. Injuries are definetly a concern for Addai, but his positives are too much to overlook. Besides, wasn't Curtis Martin pegged with 'injury concerns' when he came out of college? Not exactly a great point, but I think it mitigates the worries over Addai abit. Yeah, it's definetly hard to predict trade downs, but I think that's the best option. I also think the Raiders and Cardinals would be potential suitors, and Ngata would fill a big need on this team. Well, you may not think Mangold is necessary, but remember what happened last year when Mawae went down? Do you really want to see Kendall give it another shot if anything should happen to Teague? Mangold would provide some much needed depth at O-Line and could replace Teague in a couple years. He's the best player at his position, unlike any OT we can get at the 29 spot. Besides, I have the Jets taking care of RT in the 3rd round anyway.
