I just heard that the Jets cannot sign free agents in the offseason assuming there is no CBA because they made it to the final 8??? Reported by WFAN
rhodes, gholston, clemens = 3 new free agents for next season, plus jenks and leon coming back, plus our 32 round pic in the draft. we're set for 2010
Yeah this is the year we just needed to resign our own guys anyways. i said it before only a handful of guys i would consider letting go Faneca, Woody, Clemens, Rhodes I would rather keep rhodes unless we get a major steal of a deal from him. clemens is already out the door, and Woody and Faneca we can't ditch both, and their age is troubling, we could easily keep both at their current salaries but i would like to see some restructuring done with faneca, our highest paid, and yet worst lineman this year.
There will be slim pickings in the FA pool this year with most of the younger players not qualifying for unrestricted free agency under the uncapped rules. We don't really need to make any big moves in free agency due to the past couple of offseasons, so we're in a position to just replace whoever we lose and draft for more depth.
If there's no cap, who cares about restructuring? We're probably not gonna be able to sign any big ticket free agents and we're picking in the 20's in the draft (hopefully 32 :jets so we're not gonna be adding any huge salaries.
true there is no cap this year, but in 2011 there comes a cap... and we would be looking at cutting quite a few guys with the constantly escalating salaries that they have. we need to keep this core together, and realise that guys deals will be up following 2010, or shortly there after namely Mangold, Brick, Revis and Harris. We have to start planning to bring back our core.... Oh that doesnt even count that after next year, Leon and Edwards RFA deals they get this offseason will be up and we have to pay them as well
Bingo. And Isn't it you have to match the contract your leaving free agents sign? For example if Clemens signs a 1 year $2 million contract doesn't the free agent we sign get limited to that contract?
Im thinking if there is no cap, that would be a good year to restructure some of these big contracts and take the hit now. And players like gholston we can release and that contract (cap wise) is gone. Obviously its going to cost Woody a bit of money in a small time frame, but being a business man and knowing he can get our future cap hits cleaned up now, Ill bet you several of our big ticket players could get a big paycheck this year.
Guys, we have to win this week before we're restricted by the one for one rule. Only the final four teams have that restriction. The other 4 in the Final 8 are only restricted by money. They get one big ticket FA and unlimited small salary FAs. We really won't have the ability to sign "keeper" free agents at the higher price tag anyway.
There is absolutely no reason to consider moving Woody at the end of this season. His level of play has not dropped at all, when compared to someone like Faneca. He's quite durable, not prone to injury and seems to be a pretty big presence in the locker room. He stays...
I would think so. You read both sides of the story and there a pros and cons to both sides, but they all know they have a cash cow. Even if its some type of extension for now, I just cant see them bringing in such drastic changes in this economic climate. They screw things up and start pissing off the fan base, they could take a real hit. I think enough fans are already pissed about tickets prices, game day costs and anything that's licensed though the NFL.
Faneca is playing like Faneca right now. Not that he did that all year, but t is hard to imagine a scenario where he would be let go, nor do I think he would be willing to take a pay cut. Yes he is overpaid, but I don't see him going anywhere next year. I do doubt he makes it to the end of his contract though. Woody is making about what he is worth. He stays. Seeing as how the key to offensive line is cohesion and continuity, there is no way we dismantle the O-line responsible for the #1 Rushing Attack in the NFL.
