Scores of guys who weren?t drafted, in contrast, already are signed, sealed, and delivered. The Jets announced Friday morning the addition of a whopping 17 undrafted free agents. Several have been previously reported ? and at least one of them arguably had a wink-nod-fart deal in place before the draft even ended. The 17 new Jets are: TE J?Nathan Bullock (Cleveland State), P T.J. Conley (Idaho), S Emanuel Cook (South Carolina), TE/LS Andrew Davie (Arkansas), WR Britt Davis (Northern Illinois), S Keith Fitzhugh (Mississippi State), DT Matt Kroul (Iowa), OL Kyle Link (McNeese State), OT Ryan McKee (So. Mississippi), TE Rob Myers (Utah State), C Michael Parenton (Tulane), QB Chris Pizzotti (Harvard), DE Zach Potter (Nebraska), FB Branna
All of these guys have a legitimate shot at making the team: FB Brannan Southerland S Emanuel Cook DE Zach Potter P TJ Conley OL Ryan McKee OL Kyle Link S Keith Fitzhugh and QB Chris Pizzotti, another defensive lineman, and one of the tight ends also have decent shots. After only coming away with 3 players in 2009, the Jets have the opportunity to build depth through great scouting of UDFAs. I can definitely see at least 7 of these kids hanging on -- some will be practice squad guys and some will make the final roster. Zach Potter has the best chance. This team is incredibly thin at DE. Potter has a chance to go from undrafted to NFL rotational guy to a starter down the road. Cook was an elite safety in the SEC. If the coaches get on him and keep him in line, he'll be a damn good player. Andrew Davie is an interesting prospect. He's a huge tight end that some see as a project offensive tackle...hopefully he'll show the coaching staff what kind of blocker he is. It'd be nice to find an inexpensive, solid blocking tight end through rookie free agency. The offensive linemen McKee and Link and the fullback Southerland look like 2009 practice squad holdovers that could make the team in 2010.
When I said I wanted Britt, that's not what I meant. Thanks for the info guys...hopefully the TE at least pans out.
Why would we want to fill our roster with a plethora of undrafted rookie free agent wide receivers? We do lack some depth at WR, but just throwing a bunch of guys in there isn't the solution... Marvin Harrison is the solution:up:
I agree. I was really hoping for receivers to make up at least 12 or 13 spots on the 53 man roster. Britt Davis only makes 9. Totally unacceptable. Who in the NFL gets away with only running 9 receiver sets these days?
I disagree here, I think we have excellent WR depth. Unfortunately, we dont have a true #1. I believe the FO understands this, and hence the reason we didnt bring in hardly any WR this offseason, i believe Davis is the only one. They realize they arent going to find a #1 reciever off the UDFA line. So they went after the other talent that has a real chance to make the roster. I still vote for an Toomer/Harrison being brought in to teach/tutor our young WR, and help our new young gun Sanchez.
UDFA receivers will not answer any problems at the position. We have Cotch who is set as a starter. After that we have mostly untested youth in Clowney, Stuckey, Henery. We also have Special teams Ace Wallace wright. We have plenty of depth. We lack top end talent. Hopefully one of the young guys works out. If not that becomes next years priority in the draft.
Quick question: who projects as the NT depth we need? It seems to me that all of the DL we brought in project better to DE in the 3-4. Do we have anyone in the other 15 trying out who fits the bill?
Yea man, I completely agree with you. I shouldn't have used the phrase depth, because I think we do only need one good, experienced vet (Harrison) to complete our WR core.
Where's the DE from Rutgers, Jamaal Westerman? He's not on this list and he was listed the day after the draft. I'm hoping he's the next overlooked RU player to make the NFL and play after not being picked.
MR E. Don't sleep on Steinkuhler either, but I think either him Potter or Westerman have a shot to stick. Also the OT Tavita Thompson looks to have promise, and we need a good young tackle or two for depth. I am not sold on Fitzhugh due to his size, but either way, between him, Cook, and our current Safeties, it should make for a solid competition. Oh, and I love Southerland to make it. Fitz
I think we brought in Green in FA to do that... I don't remeber were but I read Ryan values him and thinks he will contribute in that role (of backup NT).
FB Brannan Southerland (Georgia), DL Ty Steinkuhler (Nebraska), OT Tavita Thompson (Oregon State), and DE Jamaal Westerman (Rutgers). He didn't paste all the article.. these are the last 4 names...
