While I agree the Jets can do some damage and even finish 10-6 this year, that won't be enough for a playoff berth.

The Jets blew that in their two games vs. INDY and JAX. They needed to win one of those two games to (1) make 11-5 a reasonable goal and (2) capture a tie-breaker over a potential wild card opponent.

Without the tie-breaker, the Jets lose out to both the Colts and Jacksonville, and both of those teams look like 11 win teams at least. Then, I believe both Denver and San Diego will finish better than 10-6 taking the other wild card.

And that's all assuming Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Baltimore continue to stumble.

That leaves the division chase. To have any chance, the Jets have to win in NE, win all the games that we all have them winning, and hope New England drops a couple.

It would all be easier to envision the Jets accomplishing this if the team and its coaches continued to progress, but they've gone backward.

The play-calling has been atrocious in the last two games, and Mangini seems to be ignoring his edict that the best player's will play. His inability to recognize Washington's talents, and Shott's unwillingness to utilize Leon's talents (throw him a pass once in awhile) is beyond puzzling.

Let me see a return to the fearless coaching and inspired play of the 1st quarter season and maybe I can believe it.

I don't understand the hate for Barlow on this website. Washington has shown some promise, but his good game was when we were down 41-0 and the Jags could give it shit if we ran the ball. He's looked good, but we are a RBBC and Barlow is a proven 1000 yard rusher. I'd like to see more Washington too, but no one has seperated themselves at the RB department.

Washington's rushing numbers are a yard per carry better, but it's more than just numbers. He brings more energy to the offense. You saw the effect he had on the game in Buffalo, and just last week.

Washington started but Barlow got most of the carries in the 1st half, I believe. The Jets offense was stagnant because every time they tried to run, Barlow would only get a couple of yards.

The Jets needed a jump start to start the 2nd half and brought Leon back in and he got things going.

Barlow should be the chance of pace back. Leon needs 15 carries and another 5 passes per game.

If he gets it this week, I guarantee you'll see what I'm talking about

Actually, his good game was last week against Miami in the second half, where he looked more impressive in 2 quarters than Barlow has all season. And those were meaningful carries. He's only shown flashes because he hasn't been given a big enough opportunity. Barlow has more carries than any back on the team and he still isn't the leading rusher. There's definitely a problem there.

All that matters is we beat Miami. And the Raiders. After that, it's all icing.

the key word is "assume". I try and "assume" the outcome of the NFL every week on my picks and guess what?

Brady can walk out onto to the field next week and break his leg during the first play of the game. Then what happens?

The title of this thread is a bit missleading since the bulk of the post is based on assumption.

Did you expect a playoff berth this year? If so, you need a reality check. If not, why make a thread about it?

We have a year to find out how well the players on this roster fit into the schemes the CS wants to run. There are ten games left, and Washington, like Barlow will be given ample opportunity to show whether or not they should be on this team next year, and what role they might play. That goes for every player on the roster.

I think they also make their decisions based on not ability alone, but team chemistry as well. That is part of playing the best players... it's a team effort.

No, Barlow hasn't impressed me, but I also think he needs a little more time before he's given up on too. Washington has solidified his spot on the team, but that doesn't mean he should be the feature back just yet either. There are still questions as to his durability in that role.

I suspect that the CS figures Washington is now playing the role he will next year.... behind a rookie draft pick who will be the future feature back. In the meantime, they can let Barlow, who is perhaps disposable, to take the beating this year.

We don't suck.... that's good. MANY people said we'de easilly be the worst team in the NFL this year. But this year is about building for next year... identifying needs, preparing for a possible playoff run as early as next year, more likely in 2008.

Relax... this team for the first time in a long time is in good hands.

Funny, I did not see any "x's" or "y's" in the standings to denote a playoff berth for any team yet, although the poster has the Jets elimated already.

    Go watch the Knicks then!

I see your point, but assumptions at this point in the season are somewhat fruitless. Who would have thought 9-7 was good enough to win the division in 2002? Injuries, suspensions, last second fumbles have a way of playing a role by season's end.

I just want to let you know you are posting this in OCTOBER.... How can you be sure that San Diego, Denver, Indy, and Jacksonville are all going go 10-6 or better. Although that is what is expected out of each team, chances are at least one of those teams will not meet expectations. Lets wait untill the Jets lose their 7th game to declare the season over with.

While I think it's highly unlikely the Jets win a playoff spot, it's still not entirely out of the question. A LaDainian Tomlinson broken leg here, and a Palmer torn rotary cuff there, and suddenly the wild card race becomes alot more open to competition.

There is no way to predict that san deigo will win more than 10 games. They were on fire last year and then lost a bunch of games at the end of the season to finish 9-7.
They have 2 games with denver, at kc, seattle, st louis, at cinny, at buffalo (which is in december when its cold out).

Its to early to predict anything. Lets get to 10-6 then we can worry about other teams. Most people thought we would win 6 games, so if we are talking playoffs in week 15 then this will have been a good season.

    Too Early

We were 2-5 one year and came back to make the playoffs. You never know what might happen.

This is all speculation, you don't know how the other teams will finish nor the jets. Lets just sit back and watch.

This is assuming everyone stays healthy and everything goes the way you assume it will.
