With just about 13.5 hours remaining until free agency I thought I'd throw one more quick offseason out there. It's very realistic in terms of the cap money used (rough figures is what I showed) and the signings we make. Take a look through. This is my ideal offseason. We only have one third round pick. We traded our pick for Favre and we recieved the Saints 3rd pick for Vilma. 1) Brandon Moore is still on the team. 2) Eric Barton does not fit into Rex Ryans defense. I see the front office going defense in the first round. Rex Ryan is going to want to build up that front 7 on defense. Wide recievers after qb's in the first round are the riskiest pick. I would rather take one of the linebackers from usc in the first round.
Ah OK. For some reason I thought we had another 3rd rounder this year... Well then I'll just get rid of the Terrence Taylor pick and go with Pouha again as our top reserve. I thought we were going to officially cut Brandon Moore? Well then I'll predict a cut.. Why isn't Barton a fit? He was okay in our 3-4 defense last season... We really need some WR help. Badly... This situation warrants a top WR in this draft or a top free agent WR (which there is really one one). We build our front seven with in the 2nd with a DE and the 3rd with an ILB. Every pick in the draft is risky. Hakeem Nicks doesn't have many question marks. He has a lot less question marks about he and his game then Brian Cushing, James Laurinaitis and Clay Matthews do..
No official news yet that we have cut Moore. The only thing I can guess is that Tannenbaum is still negotiating with his agent. We have the cap room but I'm guessing his agent feels he can get more then $6 million as a free agent and thats why he isn't letting the Jets convert the roster bonus into a signing bonus. The conversion also has to fit in with the 30% rules going forward. Barton was a great fit in Mangini's 3-4 two gap system. It's more of a reaction defense then an aggresive defense. Barton is on the downside of his career and was never considered a fast linebacker. Not to mention that he can't cover anyone. Ryans defense is all about downhill agressive linebackers. If your playing linebacker in the system you have to be able to cover, stop the run and also rush the qb on any given play. Barton is great against the run but he's very limited otherwise. We do need wr help but on the list of priority for this team thats definetely not at the top. Whether it's Clemens, Ratliff a free agent or a draft pick this team is going to be a possession team. Ryan is going to want a team with a great defense, special teams and a running game that doesn't turn it over. I also believe the that the front office loves Clowney and Stuckey. Whether or not they can be solid every down wr's is yet to be seen but it's less risky to give them a chance then to use a first round pick on a wr. I would have no problem taking Kenny Britt in the second round but I'm not sure he will still be on the board. Every pick has risk but historically wr's in the first round have a very high boom or bust factor. We see it every year that a guy runs a 4.4 and is 6 3 215 and then he just sucks in the NFL. My preference is Maulauga. I know he has limitations but he has that kill swagger that this team is desperately missing. His game speed is off the charts and with the right coaching I think he's a great player in the NFL.
