So all, A quick disclaimer. I would like nothing more than to see Clemens turn into a top NFL starting QB. That being said, haven't we all jumped the gun in the past with other supposed "savior" QBs? Anyone remember Browning Nagle or Glenn Foley? Discuss. TBTF
I'm a bit ashamed to admit that, buried somewhere, I still have a Glenn Foley auto'd 8x10. Still, I've said this before, I never thought as highly of him as a lot of people. I was clamoring for the VT signing during the summer of 98. I also don't worry nearly as much about an injury to Clemens, especially after those hits he took today. Still, I agree it's too early to crown his ass.
Nagle had an amazing arm and threw for 300+ yards in his rookie debut against Atlanta. After that game, things went downhill for the Browning Rifle. TBTF
Foley led us back multiple times in 1997 then had that great game to start 1998. Nagle had a great game in his 1st start as well brining us back against Atl. I do have a different feeling on KC but you never know.
The Nagle, Falcon Game, bad comparision. When Nagle threw for 300yds against the Falcons they were a losing team with the 28th rated D, ( out of 28 teams) in the league....KC did it on the road against a team that won 13 games last year & has,:breakdance: according to Pro Football Weekly, the best D in the NFL...
I'm encouraged by Clemens' first game but I'm not ready to revamp my franchse over one good quarter. Foley's problem was he couldn't stay on the field and Vinny had the year of his life to take his job; Nagle just wasn't very good despite the cannon for an arm.
How long have you guys been Jets fans? Nagle has a very good arm, threw for like 350 yards his first game, Foley I chose to forget...
I know about Nagle and Foley, but I can't say I know a lot about Nagle, except for the fact that we almost had Favre, but Ron Wolf screwed us over, then Nagle was awesome his first game and was terrible afterwards. I honestly don't remember how highly people thought about him, but I do remember him starting the first 2 games of 1998, and people thought he could be pretty good.
Coslet thought enough of Nagle to start him over Ken O'Brien, who got us to the playoffs the year before. O'Brien held out of camp and never got along with Coslet, that may have been part of it, too. O'Brien eventually won his job back, then broke his thumb and was done as a jet. Typical Jets luck, the 3rd QB on the roster that camp was Jeff Blake. Who knew?
I think you may have missed what I was writing. I wrote that Nagle and Foley were each lacking in one of the noted abilities. Nagle had the arm but no poise. Foley had an okay NFL arm and some poise. Clemens showed arm strength and poise at Oregon and I think it's going to transfer to the NFL, which is why I wanted the Jets to draft him.
I agree...still way too early to crown his ass. Another year on the bench is needed for Clemens. What I saw yesterday gives me some hope for the future.
Ken O'Brien was one of my favorite Jets (they kept him out of camp so Nagle could win the job, O'Brien could still play), so I remember Nagle well, Jets fans were going buck wild because of his game 1 performance, much like I keep reading over and over. 1 game, shit 1 quarter does not mean a damn thing. I would like to see more of him though, just when the CS thinks its time.
When Nagle did it it was week 1 coming off a playoff season in '91 w/ big expectations playing on the road against another team coming off a playoff appearance and had high expectations. The Nagle hype heading into and out of that game was ridiculous. foley had a good arm, it was better than ok and when Nagle made his debut we had no idea he had no poise. he led us back against what was supposed to be a tp team that year and if not for a few blown calls we win that game. Clemens obviously showed poise on sunday but that doesn't guarantee he always will just like week 1 in '92 didn't guarantee anything for Browning.
No we all haven't. Against SF in '98 you could tell foley had little accuracy. He overthrew everyone against a very beatable niners team.
Nagle led us to a 4-0 preseason record that fed the hype machine even more. Don't get me started on Coslet and his own ego getting in the way of sound football decisions. Bottom line on Kellen, let's see him put together a full solid game that we win before crowning him.
