The Jets have had numerous surprises this year, and its well docomented that one of the many is emergence of my boy Jerricho Cotchery. Has this emergence transended the Jerricho/Coles combo into one of the best? I know it's only one year, but... Numbers don't lie, so let's take a look. Do our boys belong in this elite class? ...and his nickname should just Jerricho....that's a bad-ass name .
Coles always has been an elite receiver, he was just banged up the last couple of years. Cotchery looks for all the world like he's about to step up and make Coles the second best receiver on the team. Obviously that would be a great thing for the Jets and would probably give them a top 3 receiver tandem for the forseeable future.
With all the Holt talk throughout his career (NC St, records, blah, blah) I have been thinking all year about it being like a Holt/Bruce combo in a few years with Coles getting alittle older in the Issac Bruce role.
You don't break Holt's records in college if your not a good WR. Granted having Rivers throw you the ball helps.
It sure is nice to see Carson Palmer lighting it up. He really got dealt a bad card in last year's playoff game. I will not be rooting for him if we see Cinci in the playoffs though, but I surely will not be rooting for injury either.
As it stands Jerricho has: 60-765-5 Over his past 4 games: 25-274-2 If he did that over the next 4 games: 85-1039-6 **Probably not gonna happen but if he gets 80 catches and over 1000yds I'll be so excited for him
If Cotch and Coles have big games for the rest of the year, I'd love to see them both break the 1,000 yard mark. Cotch is solidifying himself as one of the better receivers in the league.
If we were to make the playoffs and play Cincy (which I think would only happen in the AFC Championship Game) you do know that all the media attention would be about his injury...and ... you know who ... the guy that rolled into him... Kimo ... Would be an interesting week of news if that happened
Jerricho has been such a great surprise. I really like our 2 starting WR's. I would hope we can find that third guy that could stretch the field out of the slot. Much like what we had with Santana in 2002. I'm sure if that person is going to come thru the draft or FA though.
And I got him in the last round of my 16 Team Fanstasy Draft to round out my WR Core of Terrell Owens and Andre Johnson...Playoffs! .
Thats an average of 57.5yds/gm, when his average on the season is 63.75yds/gm. It can most definately be done, but Buffalo, Miami and Oakland are gonna be tough. Last time out: Buffalo- 3 for 33 Miami- 1 for 6 and not only did Oakland hold the reception beast that is Andre Johnson to 1 on Sunday but Oakland has been nasty against the pass all year....ranked 4th.
and Cotchery is the perfect example of why you don't rate prospects based on speed, especially 40 speed. think about it: he dropped to the 4th round because supposedly couldn't "get separation at the next level." granted, he improved his speed this past Offseason, but he has all the tools to become an excellent WR in the NFL. if Brad Smith somehow pans out and emerges (like Cotchery) over the next couple of years, our WR corps will be one of the most difficult to defend. i don't know if i'd go so far as to call them dangerous - that's not what our Offense is about - but they can potentiall provide serious matchup problems. cheers
I think Brad Smith is going to wind up at tailback or quarterback depending on how things pan out. If Clemens turns out to not be the answer at QB then Smith becomes the heir apparent to Chad there. The tailback position obviously is up in the air at the moment and Smith may be the most complete answer when the dust settles, especially if Houston or Washington wind up hurt.
