Just heard on SiriusXM NFL that Jermaine Johnson is being traded to the Titans for defensive tackles… Our past rush continues to go in the toilet.
The trade in a vacuum is fine. JJ was due a new contract, he can’t stay healthy and it just wasn’t working out here. We traded for a run stuffing DT to put next to ann already solid DT in Briggs plus Harrison Phillips. Speculation is that we are going to switch to a 3–4 which makes Reese the hands-down best pick for us. If that’s how we end up moving forward then I’m very much a fan of this.
Not gonna pretend like I knew anything about Sweat before a few weeks ago when the Badlands guys identified him as a great fit and potential trade target. By all accounts, he's an upper echelon run stuffer and that's a great fit next to Briggs who proved he can get to the QB on the inside. Bottom line is JJ was never going to work out here and we either had to pay him or trade him. Trading a dude who may never recover from a torn achilles for a cheaper player that fits what you want to do is an unquestionably good move. And if we're moving towards a 3-4 then we're also about to pick up potentially the best defensive player in the draft. Not much to dislike about the plan IMO Edit: We also clear about $11 mil. We're over $90 mil in cap space.
Here's the 3-4 report which make Reese the guy: https://x.com/Connor_J_Hughes/status/2027036430204100703?s=20 Connor Hughes @Connor_J_Hughes While the #Jets will deploy a versatile defense, the base, I'm told, will have a lot of 3-4 principles. That made Johnson expendable -- he's a 4-3 DE. This FA market is deep in edges who will fit what Aaron Glenn's defense will now look to do. They also get a pretty good NT to eat up the middle of their line, help a run defense that was quite poor a year ago.
It seems like Sweat is a decent player so the trade probably makes decent sense. JJ is/was a solid player but he’s also going to be 28 by the time next year concludes. He was a very old rookie and looked much worse than before the injury (naturally).
I really liked JJ though understand the trade too. Also concerning how down of a year he had in 25'. Sweat reads as a very strong run defender with a little pass rush juice (top 5 DT by PFF rankings) and looks like a prototypical NT for 3-4 looks. Also save some money. I liked JJ as a player and leader, but this does seem like a good trade. Now the question is, which Edge do they want at 2? Probably Reese if they're running more 3-4 looks, but Bailey would seem to be a nice fit too. Bain strikes me as more of a 4-3 edge.
I don’t know anything about him either, however, if he can improve that defense against the run, I’m all for it! Nothing more infuriating than watching teams have RB’s hit 5 yards past the LoS before they’re even touched…
Need a new LB? Need a new DE? Switching to a 3-4? Have the 2nd overall pick? Then let me introduce you to Arvell Reese!
Well again, I always hate to see good players leave, and of course its so typical of a new GM to trade away or get rid of players that the previous GM got…so now, of JD’s only good draft, we’re down JJ and Sauce…two very good players, though of course JJ’s injury was a bad one. However, as much as I hate losing good players, JJ coming back from his Achilles wasn’t the same guy as he was before, and while we can expect that next season he’d be better with another year removed from it, that’s not a sure thing. Don’t know enough about Sweat honestly, but if he’s all this that I’m reading, then the trade makes sense, as we can go get an edge in the draft and there are several in free agency as well…plus we save a bunch of cap space. While I don’t always agree with trading away good players, it does make sense and honestly, Mougey keeps showing that he seems to know what he’s doing and he has a plan. That’s very good news….he may be the best GM we’ve had since Tanny, and while I know that bar is extremely low with Idzik, Mac, and JD, still it’s a good sign. I didn’t love trading away Q and Sauce by a long shot, but hard to argue with the return Mougey got. Now it feels like he is actually molding the team to fit what we are going to want to do. I don’t love getting rid of JJ, but just like the other two trades I didn’t love, I understand the logic (wow! There’s logic here??) and I can’t argue with the return in all these trades. I wish I had half as much confidence in AG as I do in Mougey….
I think you can write Bain out of the equation given this trade, his alarming measurables at the combine and the switch to something more 3-4 heavy. It's Reese vs Bailey. Reese makes all the sense in the world but I can see the argument that Bailey's lack of run defense will be masked with a combo of Sweat, Briggs and Phillips playing with him.
the rare player for player trade. you dont often see that I liked Jermaine Johnson he plays with passion but achilles injury for a pass rusher is just killer. Sweat is only a 2 down lineman but he's a BIG ole boy and we needed run stoppers. Overall the trade isn't a big win for either team, seems pretty even.
Boy, that 2022 draft looked like it was going to change the franchise... two of the big names have already gone and Breece could be on the way out too.
