Rex Ryan: WR Jeremy Kerley needs to step it up CORTLAND - Rex Ryan is not pleased with Jeremy Kerley. The wide receiver sat out of Saturday's practice with a minor hamstring injury and is expected to miss about a week, Ryan said. But that isn't all Ryan had to say about the young wideout. "Jeremy needs to step it up," the coach said. "Quite honestly I was a little disappointed in him in the off season." Ryan went on to say that if Kerley is unable to quickly adapt to the new Tony Sparano offense he may find himself out of a job at the slot receiver position. "He's got to pick up this new system," Ryan said. "You got to put the time in it." In the event that Kerley is out of the job at slot receiver, Santonio Holmes would probably fill the void, which would most likely put a combination of Chaz Schilens, Stephen Hill or Patrick Turner on the outside in three-receiver sets. "Clearly, you want Jeremy to be that guy," said Ryan. "He did a good job for us last year as a slot receiver. He's got the makeup of a slot receiver: a guy that's tough, a guy that can catch the football and obviously has unusual change of direction." Twitter.com/SethWalder
I though we cut Kerley last week!!! jk. This is the 'new and improved' Coach Rex Ryan. First Rex tells Tone we don't need 2 OCs. Now he stomps Kerely. If the Offense wanted more attention, they got it.
its a breath of fresh air to see rex like this i would expect him to call kerley the black wes welker before he ever criticized one of his own players. this is good.
Ryan has a history of giving every player a rim job. That must mean Kerley is REALLY slacking off. That sucks. Hopefully he gets his shit together ASAP.
Maybe. Or maybe his sensei has educated him on the art of sending a message through the press. Something Parcells did frequently.
yup,i could hear parcells voice as i was reading it.parcells did one of these type p.c. every other day when he was coaching.pat riley and phil jackson were good for these in the nba also.great coaches use the media as a coaching/motivation tool all the time.nice to see rex picking this up
I'm putting my money on this being a motivational tactic as well. Not that I don't believe Kerley could have slacked off and come in unprepared but exactly as a few of you guys said, Rex never criticizes anyone publicly. One way or the other this is a breath of fresh air. Accountability.
Its all fine and well but its all about what have you done for me lately. Kerley isnt a superstar and certainly hasnt earned anything here. No passes we are trying to win a Super Bowl its been awhile 1969.............
Interesting... gotta wonder if this is just Rex's new style or if Kerley is really fucking up. I thought he was going to be one of the bright spots on O this season but maybe I was wrong...
Kerley on the bench would benifit our team if Chaz Schillens can stay healthy Not that I am slaying I want him benched Schillens Hill Holmes 3WR play would be very nice
I'd be okay with that. I'd like to see Ryan start sending a message via the media instead of sucking every players junk.
Something about the sound of Holmes in the slot I like. I could see us eventually going with Chaz, Hill and Holmes. Ideally that's what we want. Chaz is also a good blocker, and with a dual deep threat, it'll be tough to defend while keeping Holmes at bay.
I'm guessing he's just trying to motivate Kerley to study that playbook even harder while he's injured, since that's about all he can really do until the hammy heals up.
^ Nice call Footballgod. Comparing the forearms should help put to rest those rediculous 'Eric Smith is white' rumors. (shown here with noted scrappy, real white football player Wes Welker)
