As you probably know, Jeff Samardzija, the WR from Notre Dame, was just drafted in the fifth round of the MLB draft to the Chicago Cubs. He currently says he plans to play both sports professionally. He is projected to be a first round pick, so if next year we are sitting there towards the end of the first round, assuming his numbers are still high and WR is a necessity, then would you want him a Jet even if he is playing baseball professionally as well. Remember he would not be at any of the optional practices in the Spring.

Personally I would not want him because he would probably be tired and there are so many other WR in the draft next year like Smith, Jarrett, etc. who would be purely focusing on football. The risk of injury would also be high for Samrdzija, so i would say no

also Ginn Jr. and Breaston and the dude from South Carolina (can't remember his name)
Plus I think his ceiling is in the Joe Jurevicious area.

Sidney Rice is only a sophomore, so he may not be draft eligible until after the 2007 season.

    ^ See NYJets83's post ^

He could get into the draft, he will have been out of HS for 3 years.

Thankfully we'll be towards the front end of the first round and have the luxury of drafting Dwayne Jarrett or Calvin Johnson.

I'd take Jeff in the first round. I hope he gives up on Baseball though...

If Jeff stays with baseball, then he'll probably not go until the day one-two border. Johnson, Jarrett, and Rice are all freaks, definitely worthy of going top ten, and then theres your consistent guys (Hicks, Smith, Paul Williams) and your potential guys (Breaston, anyone on Miami, and especially Ted Ginn).

note- If Samardzija decides to play just football, then he'd be my #1 Sr WR, and 4th overall heading into the year.

While I love ND as y'all know, you're the first person I disagree with in this thread. MAYBE Ginn is better but he's very streaky. Breaston is not a good player. Don't mention him in the same breath as Samardzija or any other good receiver. He's an underachieving piece of trash basically. That kid's got nothing. Sidney Rice is a very good receiver though and I think he's better than Samardzija. Everyone else that has been mentioned up to this point I will agree with, but PLEASE do not ever consider Breaston as better than Samardzija, let alone even consider him as a good receiver. He was the 3rd best on the team last year behind Avant and Manningham, yet for some reason, Breaston got so much hype. I just don't understand it sometimes. Just like Samardzija is not going to be the best receiver on ND next year (that title will belong to Rhema McKnight).

  15. Calvin Johnson is the best pure WR of the group. He will be a #1 WR w/ big play ability no matter where he goes. Dwayne Jarret has the most upside but needs to develop more quickness and make more plays.Samardjida is an overachiever w/ alot of heart who is basically a more atheltically gifted Wayne Chrebet...I wouldnt mind seeing him on the Jets, but Calvin Johnson is the guy I really want.

i have a question if he is playin proffesional baseball next year than he cant be in college anymore correct? so wouldnt that make him not a first round pick if he takes a year off from football. i mean he is good but i never thought he was that good to begin with

First of all, I never said any of them were better or worse. I was just adding on to Cakes list of good WRs.

But if you wanna talk let's talk. Samardzija was great last year, but where was he the two years before that? So he lit up Stanford, BYU, Washington and Purdue last year. Where was he in the Fiesta Bowl?
This kid had a great year last year but I am not ready to anoint him the savior. Like I said earlier, best case scenario, he has a Joe Jurevicious career. Solid but not spectacular.
