Per rotoworld: It's looking more and more like the young and promising Nick Folk will be our kicker in 2010. Let's hope Arizona coughs up some cash to sign Feely. That will allow us to go after some depth at a key position.
Folk is coming to a situation with a true leader in the LS Dearth but a rotating quandry at holder. Will it be Clemens? Weatherford? Hopefully not Weatherford, that'll mean he's still got a roster spot. Feely will reunite with Graham, so that should provide a boost. Feely/Folk, TJ/LT, Clemens/Pennington/Ratliff/Favre, Weed/Beer/Both love this board
Actually, James Dearth is a free agent right now. Steve Weatherford wasn't that bad - I don't know why so many people are down on him. I mean, he's a mediocre-at-best punter and his stats proved that, but he wasn't horrible.
I'm just not a big fan of pussing out of playoff games. I'm a younger fan, but I'll be damned if I thought someone would step up and punting wasn't going to cripple us. Field position is a big deal for two teams that have trouble scoring through the air.
Steve Weatherford didn't puss out. The guy had a serious health issue that was life threatening. It happened all of sudden, and he had no control over the situation. It wasn't like he pulled a John Abraham...
Why is the hell would Arizona cut a kicker that was 16 of 17 in the regular season? Oh yeah, because he was 1 for 3 in the playoffs.
Just doesn't seem like football. Seems like anxiety. But, I just read that he was diagnosed with some shit in high school and it showed up 20 years later out of nowhere for the first time, so he gets a pass but he can stay off the team. There's gotta be someone out there that can give us 40+ and not make our K have his own heart episode
Ok and Folk made like 60% of his kicks last year and was cut because he couldnt kick in a dome ? Folk and Rackers have both had incredible seasons in the past, and they both had issues last year. I dont think many Jets fans would have an issue with the jets showing interest in Rackers.
1. What's with the picture? 2. He's is only 28 years old. You make it seem like he's 58. 3. He consistently did give us 40+ (42.0 AVG) ...on 80 punts, which is a very high number. Only 8 guys punted the ball more.
First off, chill the fuck out. I don't care what Folk did last year. He's got more potential than anyone that's available. The guy's been to a Pro Bowl and he's only been in the league three years...a change of scenery could work wonders. Only one of Folk's misses was costly. He missed against San Diego and failed to tie the game. The majority of his misses were tough kicks in risk free situations. The guy has a horrible six game stretch towards the end of the season, and put part of the blame on Jerry Jones for talking shit about Folk to the media. Rackers didn't have any issues, until the post season. ...just like our former kicker, Jay Feely. That's the point I was making.
Chill out ? All I did was suggest we look compare one former pro bowl kicker to another. And yeah Rackers was 1-3 in the playoffs last year, he also had an injury that had him missing most of the season. No doubt Folk has serious potential, but Rackers has been persistent for years. And Dallas wouldnt of cut Folk if they thought he was going to turn into a stud. I have nothing against Folk, but he absolutely IS a risk. I dont know if a Jets team thats nearing its prime and is ready for a superbowl wants to risk their superbowl dreams on a young kicker that could either be great or fail miserably.
You got a little defensive because I shot down your little fantasy about the Jets being interested in a player that's still on a team. The Jets signed Nick Folk for a reason. That reason is that he will be our kicker in 2010. He missed two games. Every kicker is a risk.
1. I like hearing stories of when people played football with a passion, and Weatherford's heart issue reminded me of Winslow's tremendous heart 2. 10* years later? What difference does it make? 3. Alright, I didn't visit a statistics website, that doesn't make my point irrelevant. I just went to NFL.com and he was 28th in the league in avg, so adjust my number to 45 and we are still talking about the same situation. Our punter is not good enough. It would be nice to have a top 15 punter so special teams can assist the other two phases more. We let Graham go who is tearing it up in the Aussie like climate of AZ. (Maybe the new punter will capitalize on the supposed wind reduction in the New Meadowlands...)
You realize he would die from this heart issue, right? This has to be one of the most ridiculous arguments in a long time. Who says Weatherford won't capitalize on it? Look man, I could care less if Weatherford is cut and we bring in a new punter...but don't knock him because of a heart defect.
lol a fantasy about him being in our team ? I said we should bring him in for TC to compete with Folk. The New Meadowlands is going to be a very different stadium than theyre used to, might as well be smart about seeing how two former probowlers can perform. And yeah every kicker is a risk, but when you compare someone who has a long track record to someone with only 2 years (both with drastically different results) obviously the guy with the consistent record is going to be less risk since he performs consistently. I have nothing against Folk, I just think bringing in another guy to see how they both do aint a bad idea.
Have you looked at Neil Racker's career stats? I'm looking at them right now. He's had two greats seasons, two good seasons, and six horrible seasons in his ten year career.
Akers and Vinitaeri both have a handful of seasons in the 70% range. And theyre both considered elite kickers themselves. And Rackers 2 worst seasons were his first 2. Since then hes had 2 excellent, 2 great, and 4 poor/mediocre years. Numbers really dont look that different from Akers and Vinataeri.
I agree it is ridiculous, you like to disagree with people, that's cool. I made the mistake of citing the weird instance in the playoffs instead of outright saying he wasn't even nearly "good", which then may have prompted you to reconsider why everyone is so down on him. I'm confused why you would go find statistics and see what I saw and not just forfeit the argument. Different for the sake of it? Anyway, fact is he sucks, a lot. I don't care if he has chronic halitosis...not interested in him before or after the Bengals game. Edit: Damn, I became totally addicted in a thread about the Kicker. And Weatherford won't capitalize because he wasn't much better in the fair weather/dome places he's played.
Unless we plan on using the money to sign a starter somewhere else, I don't understand letting Feely walk. We saw in the playoffs how important having a clutch kicker is, and we know we can trust Jay. Folk is just so risky. No matter how well he does during the regular season, I can't say I'd have full trust in him with a game on the line in the playoffs, but with Feely I would. And I don't think it'd be a bad idea to bring in Rackers to compete with Folk, that could only be a good thing.
