Could he be the biggest first round QB bust ever?

his only competition for the biggest bust of all time is Ryan Leaf... I personally think he is a bigger disaster than Leaf, although there is some kind of aura around Leaf of pure disaster, which will ultimately keep him there...

From the sounds of things, at least Leaf never gave up, I remember him giving it another go with the Cowboys. Looks like Russell is one and done.

John Lucas told Russell he would no longer work with him and asked Russell to leave Houston, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports.

lol, he asked him to leave Houston?

Leaf not only sucked but there was plenty of footage of him being a complete tool and being unable to handle any of the media/criticism. This is the aura of which you speak...

Russell wins out over Leaf, especially if we're looking at the decision making of the teams that drafted them.

The Chargers were second in a draft with their biggest needs on offense. They were 1st in yards against in 1998; defensively they had filled holes through FA and suffered as far as points against because of the field position Leaf gave them.

That draft, however, was perhaps the worst one for QBs in recent memory if you remove Peyton Manning. The next QB taken after Leaf was Charlie Batch who was waaaaay down in the 2nd round. They desperately needed a QB and a RB, and they picked up Natrone Means to fill the latter. Their only choice was to roll with Ryan Leaf.

The Raiders, on the other hand, were terrible across the board in 2006 AND 2007. They really should have taken Joe Thomas as they ended the Robert Gallery experiment, but instead they took Jam. They could have stayed put in the 2nd round and grabbed Kevin Kolb to develop. It was a shit draft strategy that most people saw through immediately.

Actually pretty funny to compare the two draft classes, 1998 and 2007. I may have to reconsider my position on 1998 being worse (minus Manning, of course). This is what happens when you have teams that need a QB and the pickings are slim. You get reaches.

    1998:

Peyton Manning QB Tennessee 1 1(1) Indianapolis
Ryan Leaf QB Washington State 1 2(2) San Diego
Charlie Batch QB Eastern Michigan 2 30(60) Detroit
Jonathan Quinn QB Middle Tennessee State 3 25(86) Jacksonville
Brian Griese QB Michigan 3 30(91) Denver
John Dutton QB Nevada 6 19(172) Miami
Matt Hasselbeck QB Boston College 6 34(187) Green Bay
Moses Moreno QB Colorado State 7 43(232) Chicago

Two solid starters (including a HOFer), one average starter, and a journeyman backup. 4 QBs who belonged on rosters. Like I said, you take out Manning and it's a disaster at the top.

    2007

QB 1 1 1 JaMarcus Russell Raiders Louisiana State
QB 1 22 22 Brady Quinn Browns Notre Dame
QB 2 4 36 Kevin Kolb Eagles Houston
QB 2 8 40 John Beck Dolphins Brigham Young
QB 2 11 43 Drew Stanton Lions Michigan State
QB 3 29 92 Trent Edwards Bills Stanford
QB 4 4 103 Isaiah Stanback Cowboys Washington
QB 5 14 151 Jeff Rowe Bengals Nevada
QB 5 37 174 Troy Smith Ravens Ohio State
    QB 6 31 205 Jordan Palmer Redskins Texas-El Paso
QB 7 7 217 Tyler Thigpen Vikings Coastal Carolina

Another disaster. Kolb's the best of the bunch, and he only has a handful of starts.

No coincidence that the two biggest busts at the position came from the two worst NFL Drafts for QBs in the last 20 years (as ever, excepting Manning). Of course, nothing beats 1990 and 92.

EDIT: Should mention I'm not including 96 since there were no QBs taken in Round 1.

Ryan Leaf in 3 NFL seasons: 4-17 record, 48% comp., 3666 yds, 14 TDs, 36(!!!!) INTs.
Jamarcus Russell in 3 NFL seasons: 7-18 record, 52% comp., 4083 yds., 18 TDs, 23 INTs.

Adding in all the outbursts and negativity in the locker room, Ryan Leaf wins biggest bust in a landslide. The only thing in Leaf's favor is that he was the 2nd pick in the draft not the first like Jabustus.

That is a fucking graveyard for QBs residing on that list. Holeeeee Shit!

Fucking Tyler Thigpen might be the best QB on that list.

My favorite part about Al Davis firing Lane Kiffin presser was Davis citing Kiffin's disapproval of the Jamarcus pick as a reason why he fired him.
