    You can only hope.

"Brian Cashman is all for Hank Steinbrenner?s plan to set up a new advisory group to help the New York Yankees make baseball decisions. He just won?t commit to being a part of the team?s future, at least not publicly.

Cashman, whose contract as general manager expires after this season, insisted in 2005 that the Yankees? fractured decision-making process be simplified, and that all baseball operations report to him. With New York on track to miss the playoffs for the first time since 1993, Steinbrenner said this week that he wants more people advising on baseball decisions.

?At the end of the day, I definitely without a doubt believe that as owners, they need to set up a structure they?re comfortable with. Simple as that,? Cashman said Friday after the Yankees? game against Tampa Bay was rained out."

I don't understand why so much hate for Cashman? The fact that he was GM for the Yankees when they returned to glory. The guy has done alot of good things for the franchise. He has made good trades recently and has drafted well. Granted alot of the signings have not worked out well but I don't know who much dislike for a man that brought the team so much success. IMO getting rid of Cashman will prove to be a mistake. Letting Hank make player personel decisions will prove disasterous. He was in a hurry to get Joba into the rotation and that proved to be a mistake that likely took the Yankees out of postseason contention.

Cashman is one of MANY GM's on the block this year. Sabean in San Francisco, Beane in Oakland, Riccardi in Toronto, Mozeliak in St.Louis.

In a perfect world, they all get canned cause they're all fielding awful teams by their own design.

Friedman is obviously GM of the year. I've heard and read that there are already feelers out there to see if he'd be interested in moving.

1980's - Steinbrenner involved in baseball. Yankees = sucky (for the most part.)

1990-1993 - Team sucky, but Steinbrenner out of baseball (suspended)... farm system revitalized. Core of championship dynasty coalesces. (Jeter drafted, O'Neill trade, Boggs signing, etc.)

1994-2001 - Yankees very, very successful (thanks to core developed in 1990-1993)... Steinbrenner stays out of baseball operations.

2001-2005 - Steinbrenner gets involved in baseball operations (see: Tampa faction). Yankees remain competitive (and then some), but lack flexibility, due to depleted farm system, hurting sustainability.

2006-2008 - Cashman obtains full control, inherits several crappy contracts. Farm system replenished. Flexibility increases. Yanks remain relatively competitive.

2009 - Hank wants to become involved in baseball operations.

    Prediction: Hello, 1980's.

ETA: By the way, I know some people around here like to think that it was Steinbrenner who brought in Boggs, etc. It wasn't. That was Stick (and Cashman as his assistant GM).

Randy Levine will deliver the firing and make a horrid speech to the media then disappear until next offseason.

Cappy, you missed the mid to late 70s when essentially the same thing happened as it did in the early 90s.
