I know we aren't in the best cap space but if we found a way to sign these 3 FAs our defense would be close to tops in the league. 1) Oshiomogho Atogwe/Sean Jones, Safety 2) Bart Scott, ILB 3) Chris Canty, DE I can see Scott coming to NY with Rex Ryan, both of those safeties will hit the open market and they could make a great team with Kerry Rhodes, and Chris Canty is one of the best up-and-coming 3-4 DEs in the league. The Safety will be a medium $$ contract, Scott will be medium-big and Canty will be medium-big. Our starting D would be: DE: Chris Canty NT: Kris Jenkins DE: Shaun Ellis OLB: Thomas/Gholston/drafted OLB ILB: Scott ILB: Harris OLB: Pace CB: Revis, drafted CB, Lowery FS: Atogwe/Jones SS: Rhodes In the draft we really just need a top CB for defense, and maybe another OLB.
how bout gerald sensabaugh @safety.he's a solid tackler and pretty good in coverage and will take a little less then jones/atowge.and are you seriously thinking they're gonna spend another dime into olb.no way too much $there already
I think Canty's a bit overrated, too. I think we should continue to address our holes internally - I think we spent enough last season. I could see bringing in Scott or Leonhart, but I'm not expecting much big money to be spent otherwise.
This should probably be in the Jets forum... I'd love to see Chris Canty signed -- I'd be okay with just one big name like Canty, and then the rest of our FAs can be lesser knowns. Bart Scott would be a nice acquisition, and Ryan and Pettine know him better than any coaches in this league.
Scott is probably on the top of the list. The other two are big names, and the cap room probably won't be there. we had a near madden offseason with the FAs brought here last year... its going to be tough to do it again.
Agreed...the cap space just isn't going to be there. Jim Leonhard is a guy that I can definitely see coming here, and he won't cost that much. If Favre leaves, we're going to have to sign a veteran like Byron Leftwich. He's a retread, so his contract won't be much either. Another running back could be an option through free agency - someone like Correll Buckhalter or maybe even LaMont Jordan. If Ryan lives up to his word, we'll be playing run-heavy, clock controlling football. Another powerful back is needed. Dallas DL free agents Tank Johnson and Chris Canty will be available. The market for linebackers is great this season. Some of these guys could come in for a decent price: Bart Scott BAL, Mike Peterson JAX, Angelo Crowell BUF, Channing Crowder MIA, and James Farrior PIT. Peterson and Farrior are interesting - both aging vets, but could be very valuable pickups. Bryant McFadden, Jarrad Page, Sean Jones, Kelvin Hayden, Jabri Greer, Phillip Buchanon, Oshi Atogwe, and Mike Brown are potential defensive back signings. Tanny needs to do work this off-season. Some quality names are available.
I think that the best signings would be DE and S. Jones and Atogwe are two great safeties and we need experienced safeties in the backfield in order for Ryan's defense to function properly. We also need to have a great DL to keep our LBs free and to stop the ball at the line. Ellis is good enough on one end but we need someone on the other end. Tyson Jackson and Jarron Gilbert are options in the draft but if we can sign Canty we definitely should since he is proven in the league at the 3-4 DE position. ILB however is going to be the hardest position to fill in the draft - our only two options are Mauluga and Worrell Williams imo and Mauluga might not last to our pick. Williams in the 4th is too early and he might not make it to the 5th, plus he is slightly undersized (but ultra athletic.)
That is the path I would normally prefer but we spent a lot of money to "win now" last offseason and now we are only a few pieces away (as long as Favre comes back). Building through the draft takes a few years to take effect. One more offseason of brining in guys like Jones, Scott and Canty would put us at the top for the duration of everyone's contract (Faneca, Pace, Jenkins, Woody, Scott, Jones, Canty) "We are committed to building this team primarily through the draft," Tannenbaum responded. "When we get opportunities, we will try to take advantage of them, be it in the trade market or in the free agent market."
Oshiomogho Atogwe or Sean Jones is should be top on there list! We don't need Canty because he is going to ask for more then we should give him, plus there are a few good 34DE prospects in this draft. Its easier for 34DE to come in and play the position then it is for a safety to come in as a rookie and play it. Also after safety is addressed i think they need to sign a good CB. Maybe Dunta Robinson? That secondary would sure look good CB-Revis S-Sean Jones/Oshiomogho Atogwe S- Rhodes CB-Robinson
Dunta Robinson is going to ask for more money than Jones and Atogwe...and he's injury prone. I think Robinson has also lost a step (because of injuries) and may have to make the transition to safety wherever he ends up. I don't know where you think all of this money is coming from - we won't be able to bring in ANY big market players. This year we'll probably see 5 to 7 new players brought in through FA and all of them will be small to mid market players - Jim Leonhard, Bart Scott, Byron Leftwich, and maybe another big back like Correll Buckhalter or LaMont Jordan. Chris Canty is a wild card - a lot of 3-4 teams will be after him...I don't know if we can pony up enough cash to bring him to New York.
