Is the Jets backfield really THIS bad?

Chris Burke, an NFL writer for SI whom I really like, posted an article ranking all NFL teams backfields, and he rates our Jets last. The trouble is, I think he is right.

This backfield is going nowhere, and should be easily stifled with a standard 4 man front. That allows teams to routinely keep 7 back, and we don't have the QB or the WRs to overcome that. Points are gonna be hard to come by this year, boys and girls.

This is not me running for cover because I think the sky is falling. I am a realist with a pretty good understanding of the game, and I KNOW the sky is falling, at least as far as offensive production. Well, the lack of it, actually. Feel free to debate this with me, but you're gonna need some real ammo to change my view on this. We simply have no threat at RB.

The whole article can be read here: http://nfl.si.com/2013/08/28/best-nfl-backfields-adrian-peterson-ray-rice/?sct=nfl_bf4_a4

He is wrong. The OL isn't great, but will be above average. Ivory has hardly had any carries for us so far, so it's way too early to write him off. Powell imo has looked very good. Our WR are for sure better in 2013, than 2012, and Mark's horrid play can not be repeated like that again, especially in this system.

While I do agree that points will be hard to come by, it can't top last year. The sky isn't falling.

Before this game we were in the top 5 - top 10 in all categories of offense. I'd expect we improved on that tonight at the Eagles expense. While Ivory and Goodson are disappointments as of now, Powell and Bell have stepped up, and I'd growing more and more confident in MM's ability to run the WCO with the talent at hand. So as for me, I'm not worried. We've been ok and we've plenty of upside.

I'm shocked how bad Ivory has looked when he has played this preaseason, I heard so many good things about him and what a possible gem we got and he looks terrible. Hopefully he was just saving himself for the regular season

    Ivory is nothing special.

Even though our RBs are bottom 5 we do have an above average OL. When Goodson gets back we could be pretty good running the ball.

I kind of agree with Tony although I think we have one potential solid RB in Powell. Not a good RB, a solid one. Ivory is probably going to get hurt. Goodson is a flyer who is about as erratic as it gets at this point due to his off-field activities. Bell will give us some depth if he makes the team.

The initial phase of the competition has been heavily undermined by Ivory's early injury and Goodson's legal woes. One of those was predictable and the other was just a thumb in the eye from fate.

I think most of it has been due to the blocking. It seems like almost every run for him he faces 3 defenders in his face before he even gets passed the line of scrimmage.

I tried to tell you all this a few weeks ago, but I was called a troll. I had never seen so many fans excited about a stable of no-name, undrafted free agents and late round picks. Your most talented back was cut the other day.

We have no established threat at any offensive skill position right now. We knew that going into the year, and with injuries and things we haven't solved that in the preseason. We'll see what happens when the season starts, but Powell is our best back and right now we don't have that change of pace back. If the OL can pick it up a little though, I think Powell can be serviceable where the run game can't just be ignored by the D.

The Jets have made the playoffs at least twice in the last 7 years when we had no realistic expectations of doing so, in 2006 and 2009. That feeds optimism even when it is misplaced as it probably is this year.

If a team hasn't made the playoffs in 12+ seasons then a bad team just looks bad going into the season. When you've made the playoffs a few times recently with a pair of 4's as openers it changes the viewpoint of the fan base.

is this your first year watching football? that is the only reason you would ever try to give meaning to preseason stats? especially stats from the final preseason game against third stringers.

Na, the best RB on the team is the one who's tied up with legal issues at the moment.

I never liked trading a 4 th rounder for Ivory, Next season is a big class of free agent rb's So if Ivory falls short we will have money to bring in someone else,I see us being big players in free agency next year, it's gonna be one of the best free agency classes in the last decade with talent everywhere

With Andre Brown breaking his leg, I'd say we have a better RB crew than the Giants

....but it was ok for all the experts to shit on us all preseason long last year because we looked God awful offensively?

Guess what, we were dead last in almost every statistic offensively last preseason. How was the offense last season? Oh, really fucking bad. That's right.

You can't hold a lot of weight in preseason because teams do not fully open up their playbooks. Teams only play the starters for certain parts of the game, we all know this.

What you can do though is look at the sample that is there and that sample that we've seen this far is night and day compared to last year. We have looked like a fucking offense, which blows my mind considering what I saw last year.

Sometime I wonder what the fuck people are watching, then I think to myself that the only thing I can figure is that over half this fan base hasn't even watched much of the preseason so far.

I mean you can look at a player and a play design and see that it's way fucking different than anything we've seen since Rex has been here and it has been effective so far.

The running game is going to be just fine and fuck the bills fan that said our most talented RB was McKnight.

    Fucking troll.

Bilal Powell ha looked tremendous in the preseason and you can tell the kid has gotten a shit load better from last year and he was playing good football last year.

MM is a proven OC. Something we haven't had here in a very long time.

I can't wait to throw out the I told you SO'S.

    I really can't.

You said the glass was 75% empty. We wanted to believe that the glass was 25% full.

Dunno about that, haven't seen him play yet. The one thing I do know is that Khalil Bell is the best HB on the team right now, which is worrying.
As Tony has said, without a decent(ish) running game whoever is under center is in for a rough time.
Just wait for the next round of cuts and see who is available.
