I personally though his signing was a nothing move but I know some people on the board are high on him. He had decent numbers in Denver but nothing outstanding, and you have to remember that the rest of that D-line certainly assisted with his stats, the was that Abe, Ellis, and D-rob helped inflate Ferg's stats before he left to become a backup in Dallas. If we are an all the time 3-4 team now, then obviously it's D-Rob, but I assume we will throw some 4-3 in there sometimes and when that happens, who else goes in? It will either be Pouha or Pope, as Legree and Reed are no longer on the roster (thank God). I am really pushing for Pouha because of his size, and outside those 2 I don;t see who on our roster can really take that spot on the depth chart, but Pope, in my opinion, certainly has the edge. By the way....I don't like the 3-4.
I think he is a DE in the 3-4 and a DT in the 4-3. I think if we play the 4-3 he will get the start next to D-Rob, and I think he can come in at DE a few times to give Ellis or Kimo a blow.
yes he should be the 3rd de in the 3-4...he should get plenty of playing time, and may be the other dt in the 4-3, possibly pouha and d-rob though
Pope doesnt have the endurance too be an every down NT. He Cant play every down but he can switch with D-Rob, Pope could play 75% or 80% of the time.
Is the consensus on the site that we want Pouha being the other DT in the 4-3....I certainly hope he is.....meaning I hope he has worked hard in the offseason to become the best guy for that position.
I don't think he's a starter Opening Day, but he'll certainly get his share of reps. Ellis, D-Rob and Kimo will see the most playing time I'd imagine, but I'm sure we'll see alot of Pope, Pouha and in nickle and dime situations Bryan Thomas as a down lineman.
He has to the last cutdown to show something. I give him less then even money to be on the roster for the 1st game.
The last word was that Thomas would be playing OLB in the 3-4. No mention of him in the 4-3, but I wouldn't put it past anyone.
I think Mangini has the mindset of rotation ,( Fit the player to the situation) so every down players will be few.
Thomas? No. What has he done to show that he should be a starter. After all the hype around him when he was drafted, he really has not done much. He wouldn't still be on the team if he was that good. The reason he has beena backup for 4 years is because he was not good enough to beat out Abe or Ellis, and no other team thought he was good enough to bring on board. I would love to see him have a great preseason then a career year and become a starter because speed rushers are fin to watch, but I think he has had his chance and will continue to get the same playing time he has always had.
You give him that slim of a chance? I don't, it's his second year and he was taken in round 3 which is good for a D-lineman...you gotta give him longer than that. If that is true then someone needs to eat crow because I remember posting one time right after the 3-4 conversion rumours started and saying that with Thomas' speed maybe he could play OLB and a bunch of people jumped on me and said it was ridiculous......so there.....
haven't seen him around in a while... But back on topic with the thread, I dont see pope starting; but i see a decent amount of playing time, maybe 25% of the snaps
Yeah, i can see why you shouldnt like the 3-4, the Steelers and Patriots couldnt win with it, oh wait........
Ummm - not being able to beat out Ellis or Abe isn't exactly something to be ashamed of ya know. There was a stretch there where Thomas filled in for Abe pretty admirably. If you look at him in the context of being a player and not in the context of being drafted in the 1st round there is a good chance that he can and will fill a role on this defense.
You're not understanding. Look at LaMont for example. He was not able to take over for Curtis but was good enough that other teams wanted him. The same is true for Thomas, except that he has not peaked the interest of other teams, and thus remains a backup on the Jets....after this much time in the league, if he was a starting calibre player, he'd be starting somewhere by now....get it?
I thought that he is up for free agency for the first time after this season? If I am wrong you have a point - otherwise - not really. Trades very rarely happen in the NFL so he really wouldn't have had a chance to play for anyone else.
Monsanto Pope was 100% healthy all season last year, not a single even minor injury to report. Despite being in great shape, he was inactived for 14 of the 16 regular season games........ Mark him down for a Pro Bowl nomination.
Seriously though. Your sarcasm is worth a laugh but your point is neither proof of future sucess or failure. There have been more than a few players to come completely out of nowhere to have a good career and vice versa. If Mosanto can fill a role on this team that would be wonderful. If not, well then back to the drawing board.
