I'm just wondering if the Saints would still draft Leinart only to put him up on the tradeblock and see what they can get for him.
Couldn't agree more and the fact that they are telling anyone who will listen that they still may draft a QB in that spot {WHO EVER TELLS THE PRESS WHAT THEY MIGHT OR MIGHT NOT DO IN THE DRAFT?????} makes me MORE inclined to believe they are tossing out a giant smoke-screen in an effort to increase their trade leverage, but have zero intentions of actually drafting a QB In the immortal words of Ralph Kramden, me thinks New Orleans is bluffing about the rent raise  If I'm the Jets and Tennessee, I'm calling their bluff ... staying right where I am and calling their bluff, unless they wanna sell that #2 Pick at a massive discount ... then maybe I'd bite if I really loved Leinart ... but I'm not paying anything even close to a value chart price for that pick ... if they don't like it, I dare them to draft a QB  FINE BY ME ... I'll take Mario Williams if they don't want him
They wouldn't draft him to trade him. They'd draft him to keep him. Brees's contract is actually a one year deal. The "six years" is phony. He's either going to be cut before next season, or he's going to have to totally redo his contract. I see no reason why the Saints won't draft Leinart to make him the QB of the future.
Sorry Yisman, I know all about the Brees contract but the Saints drafting a QB still doesn't pass the smell test 1. If they didn't love Brees they never would have signed him in the first place, not for one year, because it takes a QB at least two years to become entirely comfortable in the system and the Saints aren't one QB away from making any real noise in 2006 anyway ... so this had to be for the long haul, and I'll explain why in #2 2. If the Saints DID NOT view Brees as the long term solution, and they know next year is a wash anyway, they would simply have signed a cheaper HTF QB {HOLD THE FORT QB} for a year and used that #2 Pick on a QB ... they knew damn well, for months, that Houston is taking Reggie Bush and they would have their pick of the QB litter, but they still opted for Brees which tells me they Just like Brees more than Leinart, Young or Cutler ... I happen to disagree, but that is clearly their way of thinking ... they knew they were in a position to draft any QB they wanted, FIRST DIBS, in which case the smart move was a cheaper HTF QB for a year, but IMO they saw a long term solution with Drew Brees and that was the course they preferred It Just doesn't pass the smell test for me ... out clause or no out clause, I find it very hard to believe they would sign a young Drew Brees so they can cut him in a year ... I'm Just not buying it
Jabba: They signed Brees to a one year deal. He obviously isn't the long-term solution. If he was, they would've given him a true long-term contract. The fact that they gave him a one year deal indicates that they're not sold on him, which could very well mean that they're still targeting a QB on the first day of the draft.
It's not an "out clause" What I'm saying is that this contract will be history when the 2007 season rolls around. They signed Brees to a one year deal. He's not going to cost them that much, and they view him as a one year solution. There's always the possibility they keep him by giving him a new contract if he plays well, but they'd have to overpay. I would not be surprised at all to see the Saints draft a QB high. Maybe this whole thing was to make teams think they weren't going after a QB.
Jabba what happened to all the Jay Cutler hype. I can see you are still for drafting Cutler with your avatar and all, but do you still think the Jets will draft Cutler at 4? In my last poll Cutler was just a few votes behind D'Brick with Mario Williams having like 17 votes. All i have to say is "My how the tables have turned."
YES, I've pretty much narrowed my choices down to two players at #4 ... Mario and Cutler, in that order
Brees is coming back from shoulder issues so he has to prove his health first and if so, then the Saints will probably renegotiate next year for the long term. The out clause in this contract is to protect them against him not coming all the way so i would still consider Brees their long term QB answer and I think they are bluffing for anything else. They want DBrick.
Um why not? Brees has a $12 million roster bonus next year so if he doesn't show that he has the same arm as he did prior to the shoulder injury I think he'll only be on the Saints for one year.
It's an option bonus, but it amounts to the same thing. Brees is going to have to show the Saints a lot for them to keep him. Whatever it is, it won't be on that contract.
Why they won't take Leinart. Brees and Saints do well, they give him a shiny new renegotiated deal, guaranteeing a lot more money, everyone's happy. Brees and Saints do bad, they're picking high in what will be a very QB friendly draft, cut Brees, and still have either a bookend LT or a franchise DE with a year of experience to fall back on.
