From the Mel Kiper chat on ESPN: http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=14787 Kevin (New York, NY): What were some of the knocks on Tom Brady that made him a 6th round draft pick? Does his current status as an elite NFL QB a product of hard work to overcome those perceived faults, or just very poor scouting?? Mel Kiper: The explanation was that first of all his frame needed to get stronger. The question marks with him were - against Penn State as a senior he was just 17-36 with 3 INTs that was really the only game he was off the mark. He also lacked mobility. He ran a 5.24 at the combine. Giovanni Carmazzi he went in the third round out of Hofstra. He was 224 pounds coming out, Brady was 211. Carmazzi ran a 4.72. He had a 36.5 vertical. Brady had a 24.5 vertical. Chad Pennington ran a 4.81 with a 33.5. Tee Martin, who went higher in the draft, ran a 4.58 and 34.5. Of all the QBs of the top group that I saw, Brady had the lowest vertical jump. Even Tim Rattay ran a 4.89 and 25.5 vertical. From a mobility there were questions. From an athleticism standpoint, there were questions. That's what it came down to.
yeah i was kinda confused with the whole explanation of it all. im trying to figure out what you are trying to say.(not being a smart ass either)
Who's trying to "prove" something. Just thought people may be interested in Brady's measurables coming out of the combine. As I had not seen Chad's numbers in some time I thought it would be interesting for people to read.
I thought it was pretty interesting & I think what it proves is the freaking vertical & 40 time means absolutely nothing when it comes to evaluating Qbs..
Yes, but how many people look at a QBs verticals and 40s anymore? I think the NFL learned that lesson a while back...hell, probably BECAUSE of Brady. Only very rarely do you hear a QB getting raves for his 40 times or vertical anymore, they are being judged more by their on field production and physical tools.
It proves that after all the stats and combines have been done , the draft is pot luck. With the odd exception no one can say that kid is going to be a great NFL player.
Those QB's with freakish 40's only get you a Vick clone, and nobody wants that. Give me a passer over a runner at QB anyday.
