The trade up to get Dustin Keller got me thinking. How would the Jets know that some other team was looking at him between Green Bay's pick and our second pick? How do teams learn this info?

I was thinking about this. Maybe the agents are liable to spill what teams have made certain promises. Maybe there are leaks. Or maybe Tannenbaum just goes team by team and tries his best to guess.

    Any thoughts?

The have entire teams of analysts to asssess the needs of other teams and to predict their picks based on the players available, and what picks each team has.

I'm sure they also take rumors into account as well.

Other teams will usually mention another team is interested in trading into a slot to try and get another team to pay more.

They'll call the player and ask them if any other teams have called them.

They call the Pats to find out what all the other teams are doing.

Actually it was pretty well known that the Giants wanted Keller

I read on Foxsports that the Jets knew the Giants were targeting Keller. The article also says it wasa good trade to only give up the lower of our 4th rounders to move up six spots.

ya, I had no problem with the compensation - I did not know the Giants were after Keller, though. It does make sense, but I hadn't really followed any draft rumors other than Jet ones.

.question....is there a player in the 1st couple of rounds that other teams are also interested in???

....of course these are the top prospects in the country....every good prospect is on the radar of multiple teams....but we (Jets) are willing to throw away draft picks, because someone make take our "guy"........

I don't know about "throwing draft picks away" If the guy you want is there and you know he will not be there 6 picks later, will you rather get him now or HOPE that he is still there six picks later.I say be proactive and get the guy you want and not wait and see whether or not he drops to you.Even better is that we only gave up a pick we didnt originally own(4th was from trade of Vilma)

Which is what I was thinking as well, which means the Jets could possibly move Baker to those teams looking at Shockey, obviously he wouldnt have gotten the 2nd from the Saints, but a low third is not out of the question. Or we could toss in a fifth rounder next year to get up to the middle of the third round to get a guy we like...

plus look at it like this:

say there were 3 teams ahead of us that 'might' be after keller, with the giants the closest to us. tanny may have said "I will ONLY trade our 2nd 4th rounder to get keller, so keller HAS to slide to the 28th-30th pick before I will consider trading up for him".

if this was the case, then tanny waited as long as possible, letting keller fall all the way to the g-men, before pulling the trigger. this kept our cost as low as possible, but we still got keller.

maybe tanny called the 'boys about their 28th pic, but they wanted our first 4th rounder. but this was too much, so tanny took a chance and waited for keller to drop to 30th, then pulled the trigger with GB for our second 4th rounder.
