I have been having some debates with my buddies over Christmas about our team. I have noticed that we have had a bit of a theme this season, well, actually for a couple years really.

    The point.

Which will outweigh, what? There has been two themes that the Jets have been known for.

Will the SOJ theme outweigh this franchise in typical fashion, or will we win out against the teams we aren't supposed to? The two themes are about to conflict with one another, what happens?

1.) SOJ - This needs no explanation. We lose to the teams we should beat, in the worst way possible.

2.) We seem to find a way to beat the teams we are supposed to lose to. We are currently ruled out of the playoffs by all the experts, and most fans. Yet, the final two games the Jets have, are teams we are "supposed" to lose to. So does this mean we are destined to win?

Which one of these two scenarios do you guys think will over rule one another? I personally have this hunch that we will find a way to win these last two games, but find a way to watch the Jets be the SOJ in the playoffs.

Its called mediocrity. That's what happens. The Jets play down to their competition, and then surprise you with an upset.

You can't be the SOJ in the playoffs with a rookie HC and QB. No one expects you to win. They'd be one and done against the Bengals or Pats. That's no surprise.

I'm torn between having the team go 7-9 and having my preseason prediction be correct. Or winning the next two games for maybe, if the tiebreakers go right, and everyone else loses to just let the Jets waltz into the postseason, go 9-7 just to be one and done, and then hear all the SOJ bullshit once again. hmmmmm

happy medium? 8-8 when the Jets are going into Indianapolis and there has been zero notifications that the Colts are pulling their starters after a certain amount of time, then come home and beat the Bengals straight up to end the season on a positive note.

I dont think it is an SOJ situation because we are clearly the under dog and we are expected to be destroyed so if we win its just good news

This is the only team in the NFL that DOES NOT LOSE when they don't beat themselves.

Seriously? Wouldnt you always take your chances in the playoffs?

If we win out and make the playoffs. Where would we be slotted? Would the NFL pit us against a division rival (Pats) or the Bengals (Wk 17 opponent) in back to back weeks?

Seeding is determined by records and tiebreakers.

If we made the playoffs, it would likely be as a #6 seed, with an outside chance for the #5.
Either way, the #3 and #4 have yet to be decided because NE and CIN are tied at 9-5.

True. If it ends up Jets at Ravens I will be there, but that is HIGHLY unlikely. Still possible though.

You are right... To an extent. I think the SOJ scenario applies here because we do have a shot at the playoffs, we do have the tools to make this happen, and it especially will apply if we get beat by the Colts backups tomorrow.

That's an MLB rule (two teams from the same division cannot face each other in the first round).

In the NFL, it can happen. The last time it happened, it involved us.

    January 7, 2007:

    Jets at Patriots
    Giants at Eagles

To go along with all our scenarios needed, the Ravens would have to win the final two. What helps the likelihood a bit is that we need to beat the Bengals to get in and the Ravens would need the Bengals to lose as well, so one game would knock off two things.

Ravens need to win final two and have Cincinnati lose final two, thanks to Cincinnati sweeping the two head to head games.

They could have a three way tie.

    Here's the scenario:

    Pittsburgh wins final two
Baltimore loses to Pitt but beats Oakland
    Cincinnati loses final two

Unfortunately, Cincinnati swept the division, so they still win the tiebreaker. Cincinnati would be 6-0, Pittsburgh 2-4, and Baltimore 3-3.

its not a "win now" team.

    its a transitional year.

Why would you not want to see the Jets win out and have a shot at the playoffs with a rookie QB and head coach? It would do wonders for the confidence of this team. I always want the Jets to win regardless of the situation. I learned my lesson a few years ago when I wanted Reggie Bush so bad I wanted the Jets to lose. Well Reggie is an ok player but hardly the surefire Hall of Famer I thought he would be. Instead we won and got a franchise LT and C out of the deal. Lesson learned is never ever root for the Jets to lose.

this exactly....A rookie HC/QB in the playoffs is the complete antithesis of SOJ, not matter how they perform in the actual playoff game.

Even beating the Colts and losing to the Bengals can't be considered SOJ really, since Cincy is actually a decent team.

SOJ would be beating down the Colts, then wetting the bed against the Lions in the final game to miss the playoffs...
