Why did the Bears do this trade? I mean, c'mon, besides Matt Millen, you can't be stupid and be a GM. Is there something we don't know about Thomas Jones? A nagging injury that could hurt his production, or something like that? Believe me, I love this trade. But is something not right here?
One theory states the Bears needed to save face because they drafted Benson so high. They want to move him into the starting roll so he dosen't look like a bust. Another is that they were having contract issues with Jones. Another is that Jones wanted out becuse he did not like Benson nipping at his heals. I don't buy the last one. Coming here I'm sure he knew he would be losing some carries to Washington.
I don't think there's anything wrong with the guy, but you pose a good question. I saw this as a fair value trade, at first glance. Looking deeper into it, the draft value Chicago acquired (about 250 value points) seems disproportionate to what Chicago gave up, considering also what they kept. TJ was was a pretty consistent performer for the Bears, and Cedric Benson was not. Unless they see something in Benson that tells them he's about to blossom - and his stats don't suggest that - then I think they got the short end of this deal.
I definitly think we got the best of the deal but I don't think it is as bad as people think for the Bears. Think back to last year when backs like Edge and Alexander were up for grabs. They couldn't get second round picks for them. If you look at the value on the draft chart the Bears got the equivalent of a high third round pick. Not too bad for a player like TJ. That being said I don't think there is anything wrong with TJ. I think he will be a stud for us next year!!!
I totally agree, this is not the heist some people are making it out to be. It was a fair trade for both sides. By the way, you're "The Lord" I'm surprised you have to ask these questions....
no, the bears simply did it to avoid more locker room tension between benson and jones. they also have money tied up in benson, and wanted more cap room. so they get rid of jones, help bensons ego, make cap room, and move up over 20 picks in the draft. plus jones was probably going to be looking for even MORE money this yr. theyre also impressed with benson, he did more of the hard running. hes been knicked up but they have to try to save face with their pick before the word "bust" starts being whisepered. i think the fact benson was somewhat a primadonna when entering the league was the root of this. plus theyre prolly in the mindset about jones hitting 29 come training camp. they underpaid him and got great production, now they move on. the only person i ever see getting a huge contract there is urlacher.
Yes but when McGahee goes for a 2nd rounder and another pick it makes this look even better. While the value chart works out to a 3rd round pick, it's actually better than losing a 3rd round pick for us because we still have the same number of draft picks as we started with.
Rose-colored glasses are a facet of the current Chicago FO and CS that canot be ignored. Nothing else explains leaving Grossman in to throw away the Super Bowl despte his ignominious regular season and lackluster playoffs. I think the Bears just decided Benson was a star and Jones was not and that by some leap of faith thereafter they'd be just fine with Benson this season. Personally I think they're going to regret the trade before all is said and done.
there was no way Thomas and Benson were going to be happy sharing carries again, a move had to be made
Actually when you look at the draft value chart the trades are pretty similar. The Ravens gave up the equivalent of the 59th pick in the draft, while we gave up the equivalent of the 67th pick in the draft. Plus the Ravens were desperate because they thought that Lewis was just going to take whatever they offered. But I agree it is nice that we didn't lose the total number of our picks...
We'll know this time next year if we got the better end of the stick. On face value though it appears that we have come out on top. Benson will go down injured after 3-4 games , I just don't see him being a workhorse. Some are alreday labeling him as being fragile , anxious times ahead for Bears fans I reckon.
H'mm anybody remember the JMaC trade? Everybody thought it was steal at the time & now everybody would say we were taken in by the Titans
Come on fellas , you can't go through life trying to find a new angle. Re-title this thread the TJones conspiricy thread.
I do not know if you were even around when the JMaC trade went down. Also just stating the facts of what occurred at that time
That is what I kept saying about JMaC why would a team get rid of a WR who was averaging almost 25 yds PC.
c'mon, J-Macs production vs Thomas Jones production at the point of transaction arent even worth comparing. J-Mac had one year overachieving in the slot, so it looked like he could potentially do something in the #2 role. Jones had a shaky patch in the beginning of his career and since leaving the cards was the centerpiece to a run heavy offense in a super bowl team. we know the defense was a large part, but you have to credit the offense at some point considering with grossmans play it was obviously the ground game that held them intact.
