What moves would you make this offseason considering all the cap room we have left if you had total control of the team?
Woody doesn't make these decisions - it's up to Tanny and Manny. That being said, they need to sign anbody that can improve the OL or DL. It doesn't need to be a top tier FA since we have many holes - but almost anybody out there has to be an improvement over what we have on the OL outside of Mangold and Brick. Bare minimum you replace both guards and the RT if possible. I'd then concentrate on improving the DL. After that I would look at LB and WR. Another mistake Tanny made last year was not spending to the cap. If there wasn't anyone out there that he wanted, he should have at least spent the cap extending or restructuring current contracts. He better spend all of this years cap.
If I was Woody I would sell the team tomorrow to someone like Donald Trump who demands the best from his employees.
If I were Woody Johnson, I'd probably be sipping a drink with an umbrella in it while sitting on the beach at some exotic locale and not even thinking about the football team that is an embarrassment to my investment. Well, maybe that's not what I'd be doing, but that's probably what he IS doing.
If I was Woody Johnson and actually cared about this team I would put a f'n bullet in my head for having this team on the field. But Woody doesn't give a sh*t so, he would be sitting on a beach somewhere and would be drinking Coronas
Well, I meant that if you had TOTAL control over the team. Woody, after all, has to authorize all financial moves.
If Charles Dolen would have got the team over Woody they would be building a West Side Staduim right now. F the Cheap A$$ Woodie
If I were Woody I'd go give Cowher whatever he wants to come and run the operation for the next decade. I'd tell him that we were starting at the bottom and that he'd be measured by his progress from here. I'd tell him he could coach or GM or be Exec-VP over football operations and hire the people to do the other jobs. I'd tell him that there'd be a heckuva lot of glory in bringing this franchise back from the dead and beating out the Patriots, maybe the greatest team in NFL history, in the process. I'd do whatever I had to to make that happen. There's a reason Bill Parcells accepted Leon Hess's offer to become coach of the Jets. Find the angle and get Cowher and then sit back with your franchise in proven NFL hands for the next half decade or more.
Cowher is one of the most overated coaches in football. Up until he won the Super bowl he was known as the guy who would constantly get outcoached in the big game. Now he wins one and everyone is making him out to be Vince lombardi. Pittsburgh lost more playoff games under his regime that they should have won. If he was a good coach he would have 3 rings not 1.
Cowher went 12-9 in the playoffs and got to two Super Bowls in the process. That makes him one of a small group of coaches ever to coach in multiple Super Bowls. He had 9 division championships, which is 4th all time after the merger (I think) behind Don Shula, Tom Landry and Chuck Noll. He did this in only 15 seasons. All of that said, I think Cowher might be better as the GM/Exec VP of the Jets than as the coach. He understands the ins and outs of the 3-4, which we are at least half committed to at this point, and the benefits of picking a coach with the temperament to both achieve quickly and ride out the off seasons that will occur.
I completely agree. Plus, they have shown an uncanny ability to draft very well over the years and we don't have their front office.
And the only reason they won that Super Bowl is they found the right QB to get them there. Rothlisberger was money up until the super bowl.
If I was Woody Johnson I'd sell the team to someone who gives a damn and isnt a nickel and dimer to his retired players.
F***ing Dolan is the reason we don't have the West Side Stadium. F***ng Prick , I hate that thieving Cablevision Bastard.
agreed. we would also have a stadium, as trump would pull out all the stops to circumvent silver and bruno, along with that sleeze dolan. why hasn't bloomberg pulled the garden's tax exemption yet?
His 9 division championships came in a division where he was competing with such powerhouse franchises as the Cincinnati Bengals, the Cleveland Browns/Baltimore Ravens, the expansion Browns (post-relignment), the Jax Jaguars and the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans (pre-realignment). I think he is great as far as team-building, so I am not in complete disagreement about the GM idea... but anybody that shows the lack of foresight that kept him with Kordell Stewart for all of those years is not exactly a genius in my eyes. He did get outcoached a LOT when competing in the playoffs with the true league contenders.
Are you saying that Woody does not demand the best from his employees or that the management under Woody does not demand the best? BTW - There was another recent post looking for your advice on matters regarding the team. Look it up - type away.
This is just a thought, so take it with a grain of salt: it's possible that the Browns, Bengals and Oilers were the teams they were because they played in the Steelers division, not the other way around. All 3 of those franchises had flashes of glory over the years, even post-merger, but all 3 were put down eventually by a Steeler resurgence. The Browns re-submerged in the mid 90's as Cowher wrestled Belichik to the ground and came out on top.
If I was Woody Johnson, I would be sipping Pina Colada's, on my yacht docked in the Caribbean, with you bitch's nary a thought.
I'm not saying he was a garnet in a bag of coal, but he wasn't really competing with teams who were managed on a consistently competitive basis. Always when you saw a flash of glory from these teams they submarined a season later on due to cap problems, bad drafting or just bad coaching. Exceptions are of course the Ravens of the early millennium up until a couple of years ago, and Belichick's Browns who got competitive until their owner got an impatient hair up his ass to relocate. Consistency can make you look like a genius when your closest competition is run by the Keystone Kops.
