For reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_NFL_Draft http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/14934/quinton-coples ~~ IMO, I think this guy is a beast and is the best DE we could have asked for; Bruce Irvin got more sacks but Quinton is 3 years younger and had almost double the tackles. Also, Coples > Ingram which most of us would not have thought on draft day.
Has really come on of late. Very excited for the future of him, Wilk, and hopefully Ellis. In hindsight I wish we traded up in the 3rd round for Russell Wilson....
Second this. I love the Coples pick, don't get me wrong, it was the right pick at the time. But if I knew Doug Martin was going to play like this in the NFL, in hindsight I would've picked him up over Coples considering we needed a boost in the RB position than we did in DE.
Agreed. Heck, even if we had stayed pat in the 2nd and taken Wilson with that pick I'd be happy. Hopefully we can get Glennon, Wilson or Nassib in the 2nd or 3rd this year. I'd rather reach for a talented young QB than draft another project early.
It's easy to go back in time and say that we should've traded down for additional picks and taken Harrison Smith or some other player. All things considered, Coples was a solid pick.
The Doug Martin pick might have saved Sanchez's career... I was and still am a huge Doug Martin fan, but with that said, I am by no means disappointed with Coples so far.
You take Coples if Rex is going to be the HC and control the defensive strategy and you don't take him if not. If Rex gets to implement the 34/46 hybrid he has in mind then Coples is a great pickup because he has a role in both fronts and potentially a dominant role in the 46. If Rex is gone then the pick was probably not the best idea because Coples doesn't have a great fit in the 3-4 and the Jets won't have the personnel to run a 4-3 for a couple of seasons yet, even assuming that's what the new guy wants to do.
I disagree with Jones being better.... He's a starter so his stats may look better but you also have to consider he gets to play with a great offense and a huge lead all the time so he gets to rush the passer more. I wasn't a fan of the Coples pick at the time but him and Wilk are my boys now
Coples is a solid pick indeed, and has tons of potential. That said, Rex needs to be here to see that potential come to fruition. I would of definitely considered Doug Martin or Hightower
If it's a do over, I'd go with Doug Martin just like Laxin above. The offense is so bad it killed this season. It also looks like it's going to kill the next season for us. 1st round) Doug Martin 2nd round) NOT Stephen Hill. Would've chosen somebody less Raw because this offense needed help ASAP. Or go defense (since Doug Martin was chosen in 1st round). Coples has been a good pick so I'm not knocking it. Just saying it wasn't the best Jets could've come up with (using hindsight).
Martin is probably the only other guy I'd take at that 16 spot looking back, or maybe Chandler Jones. I was a huge advocate of not drafting Ingram, I'm glad Coples is backing me up so well.
Since we run the 3-4 I would have preferred either Chandler Jones or Whitney Mercilus. Currently Coples is being used mostly as a situational pass rusher in our 3rd down package, not sure what his position would be in the base 3-4 package.
