If a guy like Sherrod, Costanzo, Carimi, Tyron Smith, etc. fall to #30, would you consider taking them over a pass rusher like Sheard, Beal or Houston?
No, I wouldn't want a right tackle over a potentially dominant pass rusher. You can find right tackles late in the draft anyway. I think we'll fill that spot with someone that's already on the roster. Wayne Hunter did a hell of a job at right tackle when Woody couldn't go anymore. We'll probably see Wayne Hunter and Vlad Ducasse compete for that spot.
This is why we drafted Ducasse , Hunter should be OKAY at first then hopefully Ducasse can fill in if he gets some time and becomes more comfortable. He really needs to improve in TC and become more apart of the team.
I agree that Hunter and Vlad should compete for RT. I hope Tanny isn't set on replacing our RT right away. I'm a huge Tanny fan, but one concern I do have with Tanny's draft philosophy......Need to replace a player immediately when a player is released/traded. Did we have to trade up for McKnight??....maybe not. Don't get me wrong, I like McKnight, but being so focused on having to replace Leon right away....you lose sight of the draft and have tunnel vision. Just my .02!!!
I do like Hunter, but I don't think his ceiling is much higher than it is now. I fear the Jets having to draft another OL because Turner might want to test the market and I think he'll get a starting gig. Ducasse will become the new Turner, and Hunter starts if Woody's career is done. I think Hunter can get it done for this season, but he's not a long term guy. Big Vlad or a draft pick is going to have to step into that role long term.
I agree, when emotional decisions are made on draft day you get results like those, but luckily it was replacing RB3, so the year Joe had can be glossed over. Next year, he has to produce and I think he'll be fine. I'm also starting to dislike the 3-4 pick drafts, which is no shock to any fan. Tanny's best draft is still 2006, when he had 10 picks (maybe 09 becomes better considering the 3 home runs and one of them being Sanchez). I think he can be just as successful if he allows himself to have 10 picks once more, and this team needs that flexibility to really satisfy their needs. Trade down.
JMO, I think Tanny sometimes get's impatient. Granted, he had to trade up to get Sanchez, Revis and Harris. Trading up for McKnight and Conner were panic moves. I'm surprised Tanny showed patience in Rd 1, he didn't have much ammo though. I'm all for trading out of round 1, unless a no brainer is available.
Nah, take care of the RT position in house. In a perfect world, Ducasse wins the position and we have our RT for the next decade.
Was that the plan? To have Vlad eventually replace Woody? Isn't Vlad's natural position RG? Would he be a better fit to replace Moore rather than Woody? What about converting Turner into a starter or that blocking TE? Hartsock wasn't as impressive as last year.
Actually LG , he competed with Slauson if you remember, but he played OT in college so I think he can be able to adjust to be a solid RT. Even though I feel he needs a year more under the belt.
I don't know if we can call them panic moves. I'm sure our front office had some inside information before they made trades - they more than likely moved ahead of teams to get these prospects. I think these moves were pretty strategic. Joe McKnight trade/selection: A fourth and a sixth round pick were given up for a player that has incredible upside. Mark Sanchez wanted Joe McKnight: This move makes a lot of sense to me. Talent-wise, McKnight was at least a second rounder. His upside was incredible. John Conner trade/selection: A seventh rounder and a third string running back up for a fifth rounder. LT was signed, Greene was our #2 back, and Brad Smith is a very good kick returner - this team didn't need Leon Washington anymore...even more so after Joe McKnight was acquired. Conner is probably going to be our fullback for the next decade. These were smart moves for the future of the organization.
As I mentioned earlier, I like McKnight and believe he has a good future. I'm looking at from a different angle. When you trade a player, during the draft and draft his replacement minutes later you lose focus. You lose focus on the other possible players available. You can check, but I believe Eric Norwood was drafted in our original spot in Rd 4. We handcuffed ourselves targeting a certain player and trading up to draft him. The Jets hardly had any picks to begin with and lost more. In certain circumstances I agree 100% trading up is the way to go, especially in early rds...late rds I usually like waiting it out. We lost multiple picks trading up for McKnight and Conner, both should be good additions, but the must have mentality by Tanny and Rex with those 2 players lost us picks.
Calling them "panic moves" is a little much, but we had Leon Washington, a 4th rounder, a 6th rounder, and a 7th rounder, and out of them we got Joe McKnight and John Conner, who contributed very little this season. I know the picks weren't made for this year, but still. As much as I love the way Conner plays, trading up for a fullback (especially when you already have possibly the best one in the NFL) isn't a great use of assets. Neither is essentially trading Leon PLUS a pick for McKnight. I like the individual players in McKnight and Conner, but if we kept Leon on a one-year rental and drafted players who could have helped us in other places, maybe we would have had a better chance of making the Super Bowl. Hindsight is 20/20, but most people realized McKnight and Conner wouldn't make a big impact year one, and neither has. At least in Conner's case, you can definitely make the argument that trading up for a backup fullback is questionable. Really, the biggest problem is we continue to trade draft picks away. When you have 7 draft picks in TWO YEARS, it's hard to build young depth and get some help from within. We need to stop trading up, except in extreme circumstances. As for the original thread topic, I don't think it's that high a priority. If something comes available, you take a look at it. But Ducasse was a project at OG or OT. Hunter proved he could be a solid stopgap at RT, and hopefully Ducasse makes strides. If after the year, Hunter is only average, and Ducasse isn't ready, then you re-evaluate.
Probably a little harsh! One of my points. Let the board come to you, especially in the later rounds.
I don't think we can underestimate the Final 4 rules last year and how much they hamstrung us. You can mitigate the damage done by having few draft picks by signing veteran players as backups but that wasn't as easily done last year.
Joe McKnight was selected before Washington was traded to the Seahawks. In McKnight's case, we traded up for a player that probably shouldn't have been there. I hate that we always have a limited number of picks, but this franchise has a "win now" mindset, so they take quality over quantity. We swapped fourths and lost a sixth rounder trading up for McKnight. We lost a seventh rounder trading up for Conner. After everything was said and done, we only lost two picks during the draft. Rarely do we see a lot of value in the two final rounds of the draft - it's a crapshoot. I just looked over both of those rounds and the majority of those players failed to make a team. There's a few guys like KR/PR Marc Mariani, OT J'Marcus Webb, WR Antonio Brown, and RB James Starks that hung on for dearest life during training camp and eventually started down the stretch. I don't think these moves were made because of panic. We obviously didn't need a fullback, but the front office knew T-Rich would be likely be gone after this season. I know Rex Ryan says Conner was "his" pick, but the scouts and F.O. wouldn't reach for a guy just because he wanted him. That was a well-thought out move. That kid's a beast.
The Jets didn't trade Leon Washington for Joe McKnight. We swapped fourths and traded a back-end sixth rounder to move up twelve spots to grab a player that had no business being there. Essentially, we traded Kerry Rhodes and a sixth round pick for Joe McKnight. Our former injured glorified punt returner and a back-end seventh rounder were used in a trade to move up and get John Conner. Would it be nice to have guys like Cam Thomas and Eric Norwood instead? ...maybe, but they didn't do much as rookies either. Thomas only played in five games and Norwood had 13 tackles and a sack over 15 games.
You're right, but the premise is the same. We drafted McKnight to replace Leon. I have no problem drafting McKnight, I just have an issue trading up and making these must have moves. The draft is a "crap-shoot", it's an art, not a science. The less picks you own, you have less room for error. Conner is going to be a great player, I just think we could have gotten him later. Fullbacks aren't usually sought after players, even someone like Conner. The Jets had a plan going into the draft....get rid of Faneca, get rid of Leon. They drafted both of their replacements and neither has contributed yet. Time will tell, I feel better about McK than Vald at this point in time. Slauson and Brad Smith were right under their noses and stepped up big time.
