Alrighty, I see that it has been bantered about in other piece meal threads but I wanted to bring it all together under here. Firstly, personally I am not a fan of trading up unless it's for Reggie Bush...I don't think any of the other top 5 is worth moving for. I would rather trade down and pick up more picks. We need alot of depth. But, let's go for the argument that we stay with what we have. I really don't care about the 4th pick because we will get a quality starter there, unless they go QB then a quality starter in a year or two. So, having said that I was wondering what you folks thought numbers 29 and 35 will look like? I've done some various mocks and where we go is a good debate. I feel, that if we do NOT grab a QB at 4 we will get Super Mario if he is available. It's possible they pick up Ferguson but you know...the last 3 or 4 supposed "franchise" tackles to actually pan out I can only think of one that is any good... By the way Robert Gallery is a puss!! Have that on first hand knowledge...Barry Sims called him sofTTT. I also don't see them going running back here as that is more in line with the 29th or 35th pick. So, I did some research....what do you guys think of Winston Justice out of USC for Tackle?? at either 29 or 35? (the picks are so close to each other they're nearly swappable) Mangold, if he's there would be a nice pickup and heir to our Center position. I like Justice, played for a top program and was part responsible for the last two heisman winners. More importantly I see him being there...most likely at either spot. Now, with the 29th or 35th pick, whichever is open I like a Running back here...and I would be happy with DeAngelo Williams or Joseph Addai. Now, seeing as DeAngelo Williams would be a gift at 29 and seeing as I don't think he will fall that far I'd snap him up then and nab Justice at 35. Realistically it would probably be Addai and then I would flop...Justice at 29 and Addai at 35. The teams that are picking between 29 and 35 don't need a RB....and I like Addai alot. I think this is one of the deeper RB classes and Addai would fit nicely. Cedric Houston impressed me last year but I want some competition at the spot and Curtis is on record of saying we need to get a back....he knows his time is limited and now that the 1000yd consecutive streak record is history, this guy wants a championship and anyway he can get it. So, feel free to tear me up or, I'd much rather you just offer your own ideas. Peace! The Mezz
After D'Brick there are 2-3 other guys that would be a nice RT fit at 29/35. Justice, and the guys from Auburn and Miami. RB would be great address at this time also. However seeing as we lost our best pass rusher, we need someone to put pressue on the QB. We all know that in today's NFL, if you're not pressuring the QB you are losing. So, if we are predominantly going to be in a 3-4 I would love to pick up Lawson the OLB/DE from NC State. I think he can be a great stand up 3-4 OLB for us. He can fly off the edge and has very good size.
I can't imagine Justice being available at 29 but if he is its a no brainer. I hope we go Qb at 4 but if we don't think it will be Mario. You really can't go wrong at 4. The next two picks depend on what we do at 4. If we go Qb at 4 and if a guy like Lawson is available at 29 I can see him getting picked up. We have so many holes that you can't really go wrong with any direction they go. I could definetly see them targeting a RB at 29 and OL at 35. This would be my best gues for the first 3 picks.. 4- Mario 29- Moroney 35- Mangold or McNeil
Mezz, I hope you want Justice after trading down, right? Justice is a very nice prospect, but he's not a top 5. More like a top 12 guy. He will not be there past the top 15, though.
Hmmmm...Lawson would also be a good pick...I didn't really factor him because I feel we take Mario at 4 but if we go QB or OT at 4 then Lawson would have to be a factor. He may not even make it to 29 with some of the needs of other teams but it will sure be interesting. Peace The Mezz
Absolutely not at 4. No...I'm feeling that he might slip down to 29...of course I could be smoking wampum but I think he just may. Peace! The Mezz
I read in another post that you feel you may become like Champ... First, don't do that Second, see a psychiatrist third, maybe I don't read every thread as you are correct they can be monotonous...but I haven't heard anyone talking about Addai Did I miss something? Peace! The Mezz
I don't know if you've been reading the boards during your time away but before the Abe trade it was all Abe all the time. Since the Abe trade its been trade up for Leinart, don't trade up for Leinart. Not much discussion about where we should go in the 2nd and beyond. As for Addai, he has all the potential to be a great RB in this league for a long time, if he is available in the 2nd( which I'm not so sure about anymore) but if he is and we haven't already taken a RB, I would have no problem taking him. If it wasn't for his durabilty concerns, he is a sure shot first round talent IMO..
I don't see Justice making it to 29. I think he'll go somewhere between 12-20. As much as I like Addai I don't think he's worth the 29th or 35th pick. Not because of his abilities but because of serious durablity issues. I know it's crazy but I'd like Mario Williams and Lawson with our first two picks and then go OT with the 35th pick. Williams at end and Lawson at weakside backer in the 3-4 would really improve the front seven along with ellis, vilma etc...
Everything we post is wishful thinking here, but part of me wishes and part of me thinks that we are getting either Mario or Leinert at 4. My best guess is NO takes Ferguson to protect Brees and we know Bush is going #1. It all comes down to what the Titans do....... I doubt Jisher will let Chou make the pick, and if Fisher thinks he has to have Mario or if the connection betwen young and McNair is that strong (doubt it), I could see an outside chance they take Williams and Leinert falls to us. If something weird happens, trade down and get picks. Either way, we get Mario or Leinert or more picks to fill many holes. We should be all right
There are some good RT's in this draft, and while I doubt Justice drops to 29, since we didn't sign Runyan, I think we have to take the BAP RT at 29 or 35. I think both picks should be used on the O line now. I think Lawson will go in the top twenty.... he has freakish speed. This draft is also pretty deep at OLB, so we can wait on that. My guess is we go QB at 4. With two O linemen early, they will need some time to gell. At least 8 games of clipboard carrying for the rookie QB, if not closer to 13 or 14, depending. I think Tangini is looking at a two year rebuild, primarilly through the draft, with an eye towards making the playoffs in 2008. Based on that, I'd say wait on the RB for now.... and go there with 2007's first round pick. Just hold the fort with Curtis, Blaylock, Houston and Askew this year. I'd look at the D after the first three picks this year. Mez, you have an opinion on Norm Katnik? Is it smoke that he could be a starter by September? I know little about him, but being the center for a national championship team and snapping to the Heisman winner... he can't be all that bad. Undersized, but so was Mawae, albeit, maybe not quite as much. I am also nervous about the string of top ten pick busts with O linemen in recent years. Outside of Matt Light at #32 last year, I can't recall either BB or Parcells ever going O line in the first round.... and these guys are disciples of those two. On the other hand, neither of those two ever had the O line problem this team faces. So, I think it will be BAP at 29 and 35 amoung these positions: C, RT, G. It also looks like we'll abandon the zone blocking experiment, with the way they went after a man blocker like Runyan. That's my best guesswork, anyways.
It was Logan Mankins, Light was drafted in the 2nd round the year they drafted Seymour. I do not think we need to use two of the three picks on offensive lineman. But one of those three picks has to be a tackle. My feeling is that based on the people who've mentored Mangini that you can take offensive lineman mid rounds and coach them up but you can't do the same with defensive lineman and pass rushers whether they be linebackers or ends. If you look at the Patriots offensive line they have few players who were drafted in the first round other then Mankins. Players like Neal, Gorin, and Koppen through coaching and proper techinque are good lineman. You don't need to have Walter Jones and Steve Hutchinson on your offensive line to win games but you do need to have a very good front 7 on defense.
I still doubt that Tannenbaum and Mangini would stay put at no. 4, considering the amount of holes in this team, and their 'Bill and Bill' managing philosophy. The first two rounds are loaded with talent, so trading down into the early teens and picking up another second rounder would be the best possible scenario, IMO. If that were the case, DeAngelo Williams would surely be a possibility, along with Mangold, a top OT prospect, and maybe even Brodie Croyle. That would patch alot of holes on offense in just a couple rounds. However, if they actually do stay at no. 4, I hope they just pick the BPA in their minds. Since the Jets could pretty much use help in nearly any position, any of the top 5 players could instantly benefit the team. Personally, I love your mock for this situation. Considering that the Jets lost their best defensive player (who coincidently is also their best pass rusher), I would be pleased as punch if the brought in Mario Williams to replace him. I don't know how he'd translate to a 3-4 system, but I'm sure Mangini could make it work. Justice and Addai in the second (I don't see DeAngelo Williams falling that far) would be an instant upgrade on offense as well.
Right, Mankins.... brain fart. I agree with your last statement, but I also don't think the Jets have time to wait on mid-round O linemen picks to develop, and that is why I do think we need to draft two O linemen that will be ready to start. Later round picks do need coaching, and time.... something the Jets don't have, the time. Like I said, BB and BP never had an O line that had this many holes in it. This is the weakest unit on a team that has many weaknesses. This is a two year rebuild, and the O line is where I would start. Re-establish the running game and work on the big TOP problem. We can't afford to watch QB's drop like flies again. That by itself would also help the defense.... including the field position game.
I too believe that we will target Williams at 4. He may have the greatest upside of any player in the draft. He also would fit perfectly in our Patriots-esque scheme. If he's there he will be a Jet. If not, we will go BPA and we'd most likely take either Ferguson or Hawk. AT 29 I think we will target the OL. Winston Justice will go in the top 15 so I dont think he is an option. However, Marcus McNeill or Jon Scott could be there, and both would be awesome fits at either OT spot.
