If we had the #1 pick in the draft who would you want us to take. I'd take Michael Crabtree so we would have that Franchise Receiver for our new QB next year.
Crabtree is not a franchise receiver. He's barely 6'2 and he probably runs a 4.6. That system makes him look a lot better than he actually is. He's still a great talent, but in my opinion, he's not worth a top ten choice. I'd take Aaron Curry with the first pick - he's the safest pick in the draft. Tackle prospects Jason Smith and Eugene Monroe would be hard to pass on though. I'm not high on Stafford - he's sucked in almost every clutch situation I've seen him in. AJ Green bailed him out a lot this season. Sanchez is my favorite offensive player in this draft, but it'd be hard to a player that's all about potential with the first pick.
I think Stafford will be a major bust. He reminds me of Jamarcus Russell, a huge quarterback with tons of Arm Strength but hasn't proved too much. This guy couldn't even lead the Georgia Bulldogs to a big bowl game forget the Jets to the superbowl.
hasnt proved too much? He's a 3 year starter in the SEC. You really hold it against him that Tebow had Percy Harvin, Moody and a better defense than him?
What!?!?! JaMarcus Russell? ...god awful comparison. Stafford is 6'2 225 - I don't really know if you can call that "huge", unless you're 5'4 125 pounds. Russell is 6'6 260 and has a much stronger arm.
Moody? He had one touch in the National Championship...his best game was against a I-AA military school - The Citadel. Rainey and Demps contributed much more... Don't try to say that Tebow is only won games because of the talent around him - he's the reason they won the championship. He willed that team to win.
Curry and Crabtree are both enticing, but I think I'd go with Malcolm Jenkins. He's my favorite player in the draft. Great size, better speed than he gets credit for, and is a lockdown Corner. Jenkins and Revis would be it incredibly tough for us to be passed on.
I like Jenkins too, but he's going to have to run well to stay at corner. A lot of GMs view him as a safety.
Guys.....you know what this thread tell us? This is a crappy year for high 1st Rd talent. Curry, Crabtree, J Smith & Monroe are probably the only true Top Ten talent. 2010's draft will be much better!!!
I disagree with your Crabtree assessment. It is the exact reason I hate the Combine and what it does to football. If a guy can play football, I don't give a shit if he's an inch and a half shorter than people thought or if he doesn't have a great 40 time. It's thoughts like that that make Vernon Gholston a top 10 pick. In my opinion, and granted I know you're much more of an expert than me, I prefer to look solely at a player's college production, his apparent dedication to football, his consistency, his durability, and finally, the college system. If I were a head coach, I wouldn't want anyone to drool over a player that didn't show enough on the field or was too inconsistent. Things like that bring up concerns, but people drool over these measurables too much. I think Crabtree is going to be a fantastic NFL talent. In my standards, he's got the production, the dedication, and his consistency are all there. I am somewhat concerned about the system playing a major role, but I think the dedication goes a long way to fixing that. Gotta be a little worried about the durability too, since he said this is something he's had for a while, but it hasn't slowed him down. He's an elite talent that should be a top 10 pick, and I think he's going to prove to be a very good NFL WR. He's not going to fail because he's 6'-1" or runs a 4.6. I think he'll be good enough to get his separation. With that said, factoring in where they'll probably go in the draft, I'll take Nicks, Britt, or Maclin who I think could end up being better WRs from this draft, or at least a better value from where they're drafted.
The combine has nothing to do with - I haven't been high on Crab for a while. He has the most inconsistent hands that I've ever seen for a prospect rated so high. He runs option routes a lot in Leach's fun 'n gun offense -- making him a questionable route runner. He's not fast. It's going to be very hard for him to get open in the NFL. He'll have to become an excellent route runner if he wants to put up big numbers. I'll be the first guy to tell you, it's not all about speed, but you need a little bit of it, especially at wideout.
I think Mr. E would probably agree with you in part on this point. He's easily the most knowledgeable on CFB year round. I've never seen him base something solely or mostly on the combine. Having said that, the combine is an imperfect measure, but it does play a role. In Crabtree's case, I don't think it has a huge effect on his status. He likely is still a top 10 pick. You'd have a tough time convincing me that a guy with questionable speed and drop problems is worth taking a chance on at #1 following an injury to his foot.
If Jenkins runs an average 40 and Vontae performs how people think he will, I could definitel see Jenkins falling out of the Top-10. If he does, Tanny will definitely think about trading up around 11-12 ahead of teams like the Saints and Texans who are looking at CB's.
I think that's the argument you were looking for the first time around then. Your first post about it came off as height, 40 time, and system, so the only thing I got out of that was combine stats and the system (which I agreed with the system question marks). Unless I just read it wrong. The most inconsistent hands for a prospect that high? I like his hands more than Braylon Edwards, that's for sure. But don't get me wrong, I still think Braylon is a fantastic WR and will prove skeptics wrong this year. I think his questionable route running stems from his oddball college system. He seems to be a very dedicated player, so to me, yes, he might struggle out of the gate on routes, but he'll push through it. If he can't learn to run solid routes, then yes, his speed is going to be a huge issue. The guy just has a knack for the ball and a knack for the end zone that goes beyond numbers. I think it's intangibles like that that keep him so far up there. I mean, he's not Calvin Johnson, but the guy just seems to have it is the best way I can put it. Maybe I'm wrong, but I sure hope he drops to #17.
Right, but we don't care too much about his status, but his outlook. Is he going to perform up to these standards that have been set for him. Personally, I say yes. As I just said, I think he has that it factor.
I'm not saying Moody is a bad player, it's just he didn't contribute as much as three of the Gators' other backs. I wish he stayed out west. He doesn't fit into the spread at all. At USC, he was Freshman of the Year in the Pac-10.
