would you choose #28 Curtis Martin or #80 Wayne Chrebet and why? what was your favorite moment of that players career, did you dislike anything about the other?
Wayne doesn't have the number worthy of being retired, plain and simple. He had one season over 1000 years. Everyone makes him out to be some superstar or something like that when he was average at best.
no question it's curtis. He is 4th in rushing. Wayne simply doesn't have the numbers. I know wayne is a beloved player and played hard, but so is curtis. It really is no question.
Martin was a great, consistent player that unfortunately played games in Patriots jersey. Never the less he was a cornerstone of this team for some of the best memories I've had, and he just happens to be one of the leagues all time leading rushers. Chrebet was a Jets from start to finish. The play against Atlanta will forever be burned into my mind. He was also an important part of the best Jets team in recent memory. The guy sacrificed his body for this team and he'll be paying for it in ways that no contract can compensate for. Most people will probably say Martin hands down, but looking beyond the stats I think it's closer then it might appear.
I don't expect Chrebet to get any votes... He was a great Jet, and a joy to watch, but Curtis Martin is one of the best of all time.... End of story
namath didnt have #'s either. chrebet was heart and soul 3 years before curtis. curtis was a rb who was hand fed the ball did you ever research our QB's during chrebets tenure? 95 esiason bubby brister 96 neil odonnell frank reich 97 neil odonnell/glen foley 98 glen foley/testaverde 99 mirer/lucas 00 testaverde 01 testaverde 02 testaverde/pennington 03 testaverde/pennington (concusion shorten season) 04 quincy carter pennington concusion shorten season 05 bollinger (ended career assisted walking off field) and also caught passes from tom tupa and curtis martin Chrebet went on to set the NFL record for most receptions by a WR in his first two seasons Chrebet was the top candidate as the New York Jet's game MVP with 8 receptions (led both teams), 121 yards receiving (also led both teams) and no turnovers but the Jets capsized down the stretch secondary to turnovers and an anemic Jet rushing attack of only 14 yards.
:hackett: Namath was the first to pass for over 4000 yards in a season and he did that in a 14-game season. You have to be very careful to compare Namath's numbers to today's QBs. The game is quite different and there have been major rules changes through the years.
Tough one this - Chrebet is probably my all-time favourite player. Had his career not been blighted by injuries and had he continued to be a focal point of the offense he could have become the best receiver in Jets history. As it was, Curtis would edge him out due to his phenomenal productivity and ability to play though injury.
Yes, I know you said one and gave two choices, but there really are some good ones to choose from across the field.
i voted for martin, the guy was a warrior, a class act, one of the greatest and consistent rb's in nfl history, but i love cherbet also, he to was a warrior, he gave his heart and soul to this franchise, his stats might not be great, but theres one stat, i believe 97 thru 01, he lead the nfl in receptions for 1st downs, that is HUGE
OK, gotcha. It's always tough when it's between a Rudy-like success story and a guy who made it out of a bad childhood with grace. I suppose those things ought not to matter to me as much as they do, but I can't change my stripes. It was Chrebet's rookie year. We were driving home from VT (where they rarely show Jets games), and I stopped in a restaurant to use the can. The Jets were playing the Bills away, one of the only games they'll carry vs. New York (at least in the past). The TV was on in the bar, so I stopped for a bit. It was third down, and that little b*stard fought like an animal for yardage and wouldn't go down. He got it and then some. I laughed and said, "Well, well, well, what have we here..." We lost by some weird, cr*ppy score. 29 -13, 29-10, somethinig like that. Whatever. I went with Curtis, though.
I think Chrebet was the most popular Jet player not named Namath or Klecko. I honestly think he's more popular than Don Maynard. I'm not exactly sure why, but he's white and and his story is quite Rudy-like and many fans connect with it...the underdog's story. Not exactly a great reason to retire his number. I do remember him trying to be superhuman and trying to leap over Bears defenders only to fumble. I think he face planted on that play. I think I remember the thought crossing my mind when he jumped was like cheering on a superhero. A split second later I realized that the player was simply not quite as tall, as fast, as elusive or could jump high enough to evade a single defender.
You're an asshole. You're knowingly making all of us pick between who are most likely our two favorite Jets of recent years. I have to go with Martin, though. Chrebet may be a legend in New York, but Martin is a Canton-quality rusher.
