"If Fans were GMs" Mock Draft v2.0

A couple of weeks before the draft, here's my second version of this mock.

If you missed the first one here's the deal:
I went to the forums of every team.
I read the draft threads, I read their discussions and checked what each fanbase wants and what each fanbase would hate.

Example:

Player A is loved by Peter and hated by Jhon.
Player B is loved by Jhon and hated by Peter.
Player C is considered a good option by both Peter and Jhon.

Depending on Jhon's and Peter's reasons to hate A and B, probably I'd choose player C.

Notes:

*The DaQuann Bowers situation.
He really hurt his stock (and his knee). Teams at the top of the draft don't want to risk a high pick on him; teams at the bottom think that if he fells that low is because there's no point taking him.

*Nick Fairley.
Similar to Bowers, except that in this case is character issues instead of medical ones. The majority of fanbases picking at the top don't want him.

*Surprisingly for me, many fanbases trust in their FO.
The majority of forums think on the lines of "they know better and if they decide he's the right guy, then so be it".
Only a handful of fanbases are convinced that "in the end they'll take whatever position we don't need and we'll be stucked once again in the same situation for next year".

*Fanbases are heavily and easily? influenced by the media or by the "collective opinion" or whatever is called.
i.e. the Quarterbacks:
The majority of Jacksonville fans consider Ponder one of the best QBs in this class.
The majority of Seattle fans consider that Kaepernick is better.
Locker is regarded as a top QB by a handful of fanbases and a bust for the others.
My point is that it's a "collective opinion" as opposed as an "individual opinion".

*On that same line, fanbases that had something pretty clear a month ago, now they're convinced of the opposite, usually agreeing with the majority of mock drafts available.
Maybe they're seeing the same thing that the experts did, but it seems to me that once they start seeing several mocks taking x player they start a process to make up their minds and not feel dissappointed in that scenario.

1. Carolina
QB - Cam Newton

There's still many that will be really unhappy with this selection, but the majority of the fans are on the bandwagon, many of them even admitting this is a risky pick but they're willing to take their chances.

Alternate Picks:
Dareus, Peterson or even Green are considered safer picks and it looks that they won't be mad if one of these guys is the #1 overall.

2. Denver
DT - Marcell Dareus

They seem to have it clear that they need to draft someone in the front 7, if it's a DL even better.
They don't like to draft that high in this class, but I'm not planning to do any trade in this mock, so they're stuck with the #2 overall.
The fans seem to be more in a three-ring circus, with Dareus Team leading so far, but the other two teams have a lot of supporters (and detractors, that's why they're not the pick)

Alternate Picks:
Fairley and Von Miller have lot of support in those places. Fairley's durability and work ethic, and Miller's position are the main reasons why many dislike the idea of drafting them.

3. Buffalo
LB - Von Miller

They know the chances to trade down are too slim to waste time thinking about it.
They know the chances that Dareus is still available are almost non-existant.
Fairley would be the obvious choice (and still is for some of them), but this preseason has hurt his image among Bill's fans enough that the majority of them would be pissed if he's the pick.
They'd rather reach a bit and get Von Miller.

Alternative Picks:
Fairley, Gabbert and Quinn are mentioned often, but all of them with more detractors than the VM pick.

If available:
Dareus would be a no brainer.

4. Cincinnati
DT - Nick Fairley

The bengals are an easy pleased crowd; they're confortable with almost every scenario, with a slight bias to strenghten their DLine.
WR and QB positions need to be addressed but they're counting that 2nd or 3rd round value could be good enough to meet those needs.

With Dareus gone, DLine options seem to be reduced to Bowers and Fairley.
Their talent isn't questioned, but Fairley's work ethic and Bowers' knee are.
In the end, Bowers knee (and proday) is a problem big enough to give Fairley the edge; if the doctors clear Bowers before the draft, he should be the pick.

Alternative Picks:
AJ Green, Gabbert, Peterson, Bowers or even Von Miller.
5 different positions that they'd be ok upgrading with any of these picks at #4.

If available:
Dareus would be the top option in Cincinnati too.

One final note: they don't like 85.

5. Arizona
CB - Patrick Peterson

Despite Von Miller is gone, Arizona fans won't be disappointed since their second option would be the BPA when they're on the clock.
Although half the world have them taking a QB with their first selection, they're not really excited about it and would rather use their pick to strenghten their defense.

Alternative Picks:
Quinn, Green, Gabbert.
If both Von Miller and Peterson were gone and they couldn't trade down, any of these picks wouldn't be regarded as a bad call.

If available:
Von Miller has the majority of card fans excited. They'd love that pick.

6. Cleveland
WR - AJ Green

They're in a pretty confortable position.
At #6 it looks like they can't miss on their pick, since it doesn't matter what happens before they're on the clock, a great player will fall to their laps.
Although a WR is not their top priority and many would prefer a DLineman, Green is the BPA and they'd take him and don't look back.

Alternative Picks:
Quinn, Bowers.
They wouldn't complain at all if Quinn is their pick; Bowers' medical status is still a big question mark.

If available:
Dareus and Peterson have starring roles in the Dawgs' wet dreams.

7. San Francisco
DE - Robert Quinn

As the draft aproaches, they're starting to lose confidence that Miller or Peterson will be there at 7.
Their third choice would be Quinn, with the majority of them disliking the idea of getting a QB with their first round pick.

Alternative Pick:
Amukamara.
Those fearing a one-year-wonder in Quinn, would rather add DB value; if Peterson is no longer there, Amukamara could be good enough.

If available:
Peterson, Von Miller.
They don't lose hope, they come up with any kind of mock draft scenarios where one of these couple of players can fall to their laps.

8. Tennessee
DE - JJ Watt

They still don't know if they'll be a 3-4 or 4-3 team this year, they're not sure if Watt would be a better fit for a 3-4 or for a 4-3 scheme, but the majority of them seem to like Watt as whatever position in whatever scheme they may play.
They wouldn't take a QB in the first.

Alternative Picks:
Amukamara.
Apparently, the only reason they wouldn't take Prince is that they don't want to miss on this DL class. Otherwise, they wouldn't be upset if this is the pick.
Bowers is also mentioned but his knee is really scaring everybody.

If available:
Peterson or Dareus (yeah, right... who wouldn't?). Quinn.
The only real option is Quinn, which they would take it in a heartbeat.

9. Dallas
CB - Prince Amukamara

They're not too excited on any player. Amukamara has been overanalyzed in there so his flaws have made him less attractive for many fans who keep on looking for an alternate option.
But despite all that, they seem to accept that the best value they could get in here without trading down is the best CB available.

Alternative Picks:
Tyron Smith.
They consider him a reach, but he's the only other option that they could feel confortable with.

If available:
Quinn, Watt.
Not really excited about them either, but probably would take them instead of Prince.
They're not even wasting time to think "what if" scenarios where one of the top picks falls to them.

10. Washington
QB - Blaine Gabbert

To be honest, they don't like anyone at 10.
They really hate that spot and are eager to trade down.
So, assuming some of them will be dissappointed no matter how, Gabbert is a not so bad pick.
This because although the majority want a QB in the 2nd round (or lower in the first), they're counting that Gabbert won't be there when they're on the clock and he's regarded by many of them as the best QB of this class.

Alternative Picks:
Jones, Locker, Jordan, T Smith.
Against these picks they argue that they don't want to use the 10 in a position they don't have a big need (WR/OL) or that the player in question is a reach (Locker/Jordan).

If available:
Watt, Quinn, Green.
Each of them with their respective detractors, but they'd consider them if they were available.

11. Houston
DE - Cameron Jordan

Another team dealing with a 4-3/3-4 ID-crisis.
The fans are divided between drafting a player in a position they don't need too much (like Jordan) or reaching for a player that they need more (i.e. OLB).
Those trying to reach for their player can't decide who would be their pick, so Cam Jordan it is.

Alternative Picks:
Houston, Reed, Kerrigan, A Smith.
Reaching for these players and taking them at 11 could be acceptable for many texans fans.
Julio Jones is also another option, but the majority don't want to waste their first round pick in offense.

If available:
Quinn is their pick and Watt could be considered.
They're not high on Amukamara despite their awful secondary.

12. Minnesota
QB - Jake Locker

They don't wanna wait for the second round and risk to lose a QB.
Their ideal scenario is trading down a bit, but if that's not possible they won't be upset if they have to reach to get this guy.

Alternative Picks:
Ponder, Mallet.
Still reaching, but they don't mind. Both are regarded by some as the best QB in this class and they're afraid none of them would be there in the second round.
Julio Jones could be acceptable but they're more worried to grab their QB.

If available:
Gabbert or Newton would be picked before Locker.

13. Detroit
OT - Tyron Smith

Not an easy one.
They want a CB or -to a lesser degree- a DE, but many of them would hate what's left on the menu.
The other option is OLine, but they're not sold on that one neither.
Still, they could agree that Smith is the best value they could get at 13, although some consider him a reach or a position they don't need that much.

Alternative Picks:
Castonzo if they're taking OL.
Jimmy Smith as a consolation prize, but his many red flags are scaring lion's fans.
Kerrigan, Aldon Smith, Ayers would be picked at 13 by many of them, but the rest considers that that is reaching too much.

If available:
Amukamara. This is their guy.
Otherwise, Quinn, Watt and Jordan would be picked before Smith.

WR - Julio Jones

A no brainer considering every post in there starts with "if JJ is not there, then we should pick..."
If Rams fans had the #1 pick, this would be their pick.

Alternative Picks:
Liuget, Aldon Smith, Ingram.

If available:
No one. JJ > AJ.
JJ > everyone else.

QB - Ryan Mallett

They want and need a QB; if they can trade down to get the guy they want, they would; otherwise they wouldn't risk waiting till the second round to see what's left.
Mallet is the guy they seem to like the most; not a reach since many think he'll be gone by the time they pick.

Alternative Picks:
Pouncey, Ingram or Ponder could be options if Mallett is gone.

If available:
Newton. Maybe Gabbert.

16. Jacksonville
DE - Ryan Kerrigan

Lot of debate in there.
A few weeks ago they were really decided on getting a QB, now many of them are jumping on the DL bandwagon.
Although they're having a heated debate those eager to grab a QB at 16 are not really against getting a DE, unlike those claiming that there's no QB worth taking at 16 and/or that if there's one worthy he won't be there.
Among the DE considered, Kerrigan is their best option.

Alternative Picks:
Ponder would be the guy they could accept as a worthy QB at 16.

If available:
Quinn, Locker or Watt would be considered in the talking but they're not necessarily rated higher than Kerrigan.

17. New England
DE - Da'Quann Bowers

Not totally convinced on this one; the pats have so many picks they don't know what to do with them; it's 57 channels and there's nothing on.
Many want to trade up, many want to trade down, but in the end they can't decide who they want. They're certainly not excited about any of the players left.
Bowers has fall all the way down here mainly because of his knee, and although some pats don't want him for the same reason, some would like him because of his value and the fact that they still have enough picks to take the risk on this one.

Alternative Picks:
A Smith, Wilkerson, Heyward, Carimi, Solder, Castonzo, Ingram... all mentioned as options.

If available:
Quinn. They'd trade up if they had the ammo (which they have) and if there's a trading partner (which there'll be).
They'd also like Watt, Jordan or Amukamara.

18. San Diego
DT - Cameron Heyward

With their first choices gone and unable to trade down, everybody could be happy with Heyward.

Alternative Picks:
Wilkerson is on par with Heyward, they're both rated on the same tier.
Houston, A Smith, Carimi are considered a bit of a reach, not that they'd be against picking them.

If available:
Jordan and Watt would be their first choice, they're willing to trade up.

19. Giants
OL - Mike Pouncey

Divided opinions.
OTackles have their own bandwagons but also have many haters.
It seems that in all their mocks they'll be trading down; they're not confortable picking at that spot and whenever a name is mentioned many of them come up with some sort of "...I'd rather get Pouncy at 19"; so that's it.
They'd like him to switch to Center if possible.

Alternative Picks:
Castonzo and Solder are often mentioned, but they're far from being generally accepted.
Jimmy Smith is viewed as useful for them, although far from their best case scenario.
Ingram's knee is a concern, but if he's there and his knee is cleared, they wouldn't mind getting him.
Ayers is mentioned and not disliked, although he's considered a reach.

If available:
Tyron Smith should be taken over Pouncey.

DE - Aldon Smith

Another crowd in the DE bandwagon, they'd be gladly surprised if Smith is available at 20.

Alternative Picks:
Houston would've been the pick if Smith wasn't available, despite not being the best option for some of their fans.
Castonzo and Jimmy Smith would be considered.

If available:
Kerrigan or Watt are their main targets, some would trade up to get them... although they're assuming Smith wouldn't be there.
Also, Bowers would be considered a worthy pick (risk/reward) regardless of his medical condition.

OT - Gabe Carimi

Although many of them would like a DE/LB or even a QB in the first, the majority would agree that an OT or a DT is the best thing to do.
Considered by some as a reach at 21, Carimi is still the most accepted name for chiefs fans.

Alternative Picks:
Taylor or Houston would make many fans very happy.
Some would prefer Solder or Sherrod than Carimi.
Ayers and Ponder have been mentioned, but are considered a big reach at 21.

If available:
Aldon Smith. Kerrigan. Tyron Smith.

Almost identical situation than KC, Indianapolis fans are looking for an OT and a DT with their first 2 picks.
Sherrod is the player they like the most.

Carimi or T Smith would be joining the discussion but not necesarily would be picked ahead of Sherrod.

They want a CB and they're willing to take one of the most talented in this draft despite being the one with the most attitude red flags raised.

DE - Muhammed Wilkerson

Another easy to please crowd, they don't see themselves with glaring needs, so they'd be ok with almost anything their FO decides to choose -except for a QB.
The BPA with a little bias to the defensive side of the ball would be their choice and they feel that Wilkerson is the one that fits the mold.

Alternative Picks:
Clayborn, Ayers, Houston and Reed are considered, but they're more seen as a reach, players to get in a trade down.
Ingram is another option they'd be ok with, but they'd rather get a defensive guy.

If available:
Kerrigan, Heyward or any of the top pass rushers.
Jimmy Smith could be considered as a good option.

25. Seattle
DT - Corey Liuget

The majority of them are in a "QB or DT" mode, but the majority of the players they really want are already taken.
Still, Liuget is mentioned as a good and valid option and no one would question this pick.

Alternative Picks:
Phil Taylor is mentioned almost as much as Liuget.
Ingram would be the pick for those that prefer BPA over Need, but the rest don't regard him as THAT much of a BPA.
Kaepernick would be the pick for those that REALLY want a QB; if Mallett and Locker are gone, they want Kaepernick either with their first or their second.

If available:
Mallett, no doubt.
If Mallet's gone, then Locker, Wilkerson, Pouncey and Jimmy Smith all would've been picked before Liuget.

LB Justin Houston

Not really excited about anyone, the Ravens aren't looking to fill a blatant gap.
Eager to trade down if their top options are no longer there, Houston could be the one they'd feel more confortable drafting at 26, even if they feel they'd be reaching a little bit.

Alternative Picks:
Reed, Ayers, Solder and Clayborn are considered, but they think they'd be reaching too much.

If available:
Jimmy Smith would've been likely their ideal pick.
Heyward, Sherrod and Wilkerson would've been in the discussion.

TE - Kyle Rudolph

These guys really really hate their spot.
Their best valued DEs are all long gone and they can't seem to find anything worthy at 27.
They'd trade up or trade down; I'm thinking that if they can't trade down they may aswell forfeit their pick altogether because they really hate anyone at 27, every DE avilable is a bust and every player that could work for them is a huge reach.

Kyle Rudolph is a big reach at 27 but if they can't find a trading partner to get him in the second, they would pull a Jacksonville and take him in the first.
I'm choosing him because he's the only player some of them seem to be excited to take.

Alternative Picks:
Clayborn is the best DE option they'd be rejecting, but along with Reed and Ayers is regarded as one more DE project in a long list of DE projects drafted by them in the last few years.
Ingram is viewed by some as the BPA, but the rest of them feels that they'll be wasting the 1st pick to draft a back up RB.

If available:
Kerrigan or Houston. Otherwise, trade down.

OT - Nate Solder

Like I said before, they don't know what to do with so many picks and they're so used to BB trading them that they're just assuming they won't pick in this spots anyway.
But the ridiculous part is that at least 3 players they were considering to draft at 17, are still available for them to grab at 28 (and likely at least one of those could be available when they pick once again at 33).

They want a front 7 and an OL in the first round; since Bowers was their pick at 17, this time is an OT, and Solder is the most supported pick.

Alternative Picks:
Castonzo could have won... slightly less supporters of Castonzo than Solder's.
Ingram is also there and he could still be there at 33.
Ayers and Reed, but they're not sold on them; at best they'd take them with a second round.

If available:
These are guys that they were considering at 17.

OT - Anthony Castonzo

Christmas came earlier for da bears.
They're praying that one of the other top OLinemen falls to their laps, even if those are not rated as high as Castonzo.
Well, those other OLs are already taken, but the one they didn't expected is right there.
They'd grab Castonzo and run away with it feeling guilty and wondering how did this happen.

Alternative Picks:
Not really.

If available:
Sherrod, Carimi and Pouncey, but not over Castonzo.
Asking for Tyron Smith would be pushing their luck.
If no OT was there, Liuget would've been an option.

LB - Akeem Ayers

Some teams would consider him a reach, but also he's a better fit for the Jets than for other teams.
Not the most exciting pick for many fans, but the majority agrees that this is the best option at 30.

Alternative Picks:
Reed, Wilson, Taylor, Sheard and Paea are valid and in some cases even exciting options for the fans, but are seen like a bit of a reach for many.

If available:
Kerrigan, Heyward or Houston would be in the discussion, not necessarily picked ahead of Ayers by some.

CB - Brandon Harris

They're focused in two positions: OL and CB.
They'd be gladly surprised (I'm not sure why) if they get a chance to get Harris.

Alternative Picks:
Williams, Moore and Dowling if they want DBs.
Ijalana and Cannon if they want OLs.
They'd be reaching, they know it but since they basically need OL and DB they wouldn't mind too much having the best of them at 31.
Taylor or Baldwin if they start thinking outside of the box.

If available:
Sherod, Pouncey. Jimmy Smith.
They'd take any of them, even Jimmy and his red flags.

RB - Mark Ingram

Although they want either an OL or an LB, the value they could find at 32 is really low.
So, despite that this definitely is NOT a priority on their list, the majority would regard Ingram as the BUPA (Best Useful Player Available) and pull the trigger on him.

Alternative Picks:
Reed would be their choice at 32 if Ingram had not fall that far.
Ijalana would be reaching, but it's an option.

If available:
Solder, Pouncey, Ayers.

*Mallett.
He's rated high not only by the dolphins. At least the Vikings, Redskins and Seahawks would take him in the first round.

Obviously I'm not an expert so I can't rate the QB class, but it's really divided out there: Every QB -Newton, Locker, Gabbert, Mallett, Ponder, Dalton, Kaepernick and even Stanzi- is regarded as the potential franchise elite player of this class by some and the most overated bust for everyone else.

And they all use the same arguments: "have you seen him play? he clearly shows great/awful technique/athleticism/accuracy/footwork/attitude/leadership... it's just that the media is definitely over hyping/critizising him"

And many among those that would draft any of this QBs in the first round, know that they may be picking a bust, but since it seems that there'll be a rookie salary cap and since the QB position is that important, they're willing to take the risk.

Once said that, it doesn't change a bit that dolphin fans are not the sharpest knives in the drawer.

Supposedly alot of 3-4 teams like him because he's "scheme versatile" but can he stand in a 3-4 alignment? Unless they mean he can be an end in either a 3-4 or 4-3 but thats a bit strange for your 1st rounder.
