Dude is a big monster, but he needs to give it his 100% for every snap. He's a great run blocker and can find the QB too. He frequently gets lazy, but maybe a paycheck would be something that could motivate him to do well in the NFL?
I don't want anything to do with the guy. We need passionate football players in that locker room, not another player (S. Holmes) that is going to quit on his team.
I think jets getting him is the best realisitic draft scenario other than trading down. And id be ecstatic if we got him. After Luck and Trich, this guy might have the highest ceiling in the draft. Id love to either sign him, or trade down to a 4-3 team desperate to get their hands on him and land a bounty. Im still so doubtful hes around, but hands down best pass rusher in the draft
I would rather a player with less upside but with all of the tangibles. The guy does have talent, but the last thing we can afford is another bust.
Alot of our options @ 16 have a decent bust chance imo Floyd, , Brockers, Coples plus any of the reach guys (ie branch) Only "safe" picks imo are Trich (not gonna be there) Decastro (not gonna be there), and Glenn (doubt we draft him) Im not really sure where id put Upshaw. I think hes got a lower ceiling, but a decent chance of being a relatively safe pick. So Im not sure if Id consider drafting the next Bryan Thomas (possibly a little higher of a ceiling) @ 16 a bust, but I think it would be. If youre gonna risk it, risk it for the guy with the highest ceiling And hell at least he was good for 2 years in a row
I dont think Cordy Glenn is really a safe pick... Hightower sticks out as what is considered a safe pick with the potential. Upshaw is kind of a risky pick, but he loves the game and gives 100% every play. I hate Brockers at 16 and hope they dont even consider him and Floyd seems like he has all of the tools and looks like he got his act together. He may not be able to stretch the field in the NFL, but at the very least he will be a redzone threat that is very reliable between the 20’s. Everyone has their risks, but the question mark I hate the most is work ethic and drive.
So you want to take a guy with motivation problems so bad that a bunch of others teams that he fits much better with as a true DE passed on him, and then put him in a position that simply has no shot at succeeding in at OLB? He's not a good or sudden enough athlete to play there, and would need an even higher motivation level than other players needing to play there after never sniffing the position at NC. It would be an awful pick short of an instant move to a 43 defense (which would then make countless other moves they've made equally awful).
Way I look at is Coples is PROBABLY the BEST pass rusher in this draft. IMO Rex is one of if not the best defensive mind in the league Now Rex went and watched this guy play both DE and OLB drills. So if the Jets, and thus Rex draft this guy, im confident that it will work out. Its not like were talking about a guy like Belicheat who is clearly clueless on defense here. If Rex thinks he can fit the best pass rusher in the draft into his system, then id be more than ecstatic about the pick.
Coples has great skills, but he's not so much better than other players that he's worth fitting a square peg into a round hole. I'd love to believe that Rex taking the kid would mean that he knows he can turn this kid into a stud, but I'd be just as worried that it would be an arrogance thing (no one else can do it, but I can!!). It's just asking for trouble, and, being so closely removed from a vision of what can happen when a player isn't motivated to learn a position, I don't see him as a viable option. People are overstating just how good of a prospect he is too, because he's not Julius Peppers. Pep was about as explosive as they came coming out of NC (played LB extensively if I recall), Coples is more of a physical rusher.
If Coples is still there on 16 he's probably going to drop way low in the round, because on pure talent he should be gone on 7 and maybe even on 6. Having him still there in mid-round would mean the league had decided the work ethic was a huge problem.
His work ethic is a problem, if he isn't going to give 100% then don't get him. Get somebody like Upshaw or Ingram (if available of course). If he is available, trade down or if we can get another position need filled then fill that.
Well im moreso suggesting that Rex selecting him would mean hes confident that he could fit him into our system, rather than have a successful nfl career. I mean nobody can predict with certainty on who is or isn't going to flourish in the nfl. And some of the other pass rushers might be less of a risk than Coples (ie Ingram) , so its not like other teams are passing on him because they think hes this complete mess, but rather there are other guys better filling there need. I mean look @ the 7 round mock on here. The only 2 pass rushers off the board before the Jets are Ingram and Coples. And of the 3 I think Coples and Ingram by far have the 2 highest ceilings as pass rushers, and I think theres a very slim chance @ Ingram being there
You have to take into account Rex boasting that he can coach him up. He said he could do the same to Gholston.
That would remind me a bit of vince wilfork in 04 i think - he dropped into the lower part of round 1 and who scooped him up - of course the pats. who knows but as we get closer i think a trade down is very feasible with all things considered. folks have to ask yourselves what is the talent/mental gap between a player such as coples at LB and someone like branck, perry, or even hightower.
Right, that's the arrogance thing I was talking about. And watching that vid did nothing to show me he can transition. He's not a speed/athletic end, he's a power guy. I don't think anyone outside the Jets rumor starters thinks he's the kind of guy that can switch. I mean, people are afraid of Upshaw in space, and I'd take him 10/10 over Coples in that regard.
