this guys smart. he'll be collecting massive million dollar paychecks long after hes left the game. i guess he doesnt want to spend the later part of his life doing horrible commericals in panda suits back home.
there are very few if any instances where it is a smart move to defer your own money.....you should always take the money now....how is it smart that hes gonna get say 3 mil 18 years from now when the 3 il will no longer be worth what 3 mil is now? dumb move by ichiro
Well, he could have not agreed to defer it and not have gotten it at all... That said, I agree with the Marlins GM. This contract is totally irresponsible on the Mariners part. Awful, awful deal.
he would be WAAAAY better of financially to take less now than more later.....although the way the market is in baseball he would have almost certainly gotten something very very close
the marlins GM has no business opening up his mouth about another teams contracts....Free agency is certainly bad for sports...very bad....and the next big thing to hit the market is these bullshit posting prices to negotiate with japanese players.......
You're looking at diminishing returns from a common man's POV. Sure, for you or I, taking 6 million today rather than 1 million over 6 years makes financial sense. Investment of the capital can yield better returns long-term. But for Ichiro, it's not about money anymore. It's the prestige of getting a ridiculous contract. He out-ARoded ARod. As for the Marlin's GM, while correct, he should STFU. The Marlins are the same organization that dismantled a World Series champion, and fired the Manager of the Year last year. Whether it had anything to do with him is irrelevant. He's just pissed because he'll never have the income to offer such a ridiculous deal. Sorry, I don't feel bad for small market teams. They get all that revenue sharing BS, and they don't purchase contracts with it. Whose fault is that? Big cities like their sports, so we pay to play. F parity.
wtf you mean no man.. ichiro leading off and jeter batting second would be sick if it happened just because he signs a contract does not mean that player can not get traded.
I love the $1000 annual increase in his housing allowance. Cause, you know you got to protect the purchasing power of that $17mill.
1) He's not going to be traded, period. 2) Why would they give him such a ridiculous contract if they had ANY thoughts of trading him? 3) What team would be stupid enough to trade for him with that contract? 4) Why would they trade him when they put so much effort into signing him? 5) What do you propose we give Seattle for the best leadoff hitter in the game? Hughes and Cabrera? You think he'd come at all cheap? Come on. It's not even a pipe dream to think Ichiro has any shot at being a Yankee. Just be happy that he will not be playing centerfield in Fenway next year.
There's another point to deferring money which no one brought up. The taxes on that money, if taken yearly would end up being around 50%. By taking it after he retires and probably being back in Japan (of course I'm not familiar with their tax code), I would think would be less.
I could see it happening toward the end of his contract when he's old and his skills have eroded to the point where he's a shell of the player he once was, propped up by hype.
who here agrees with alio that its not about the money for ichiro? hahah come on bro....it is ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS about the money
I think you're misunderstanding my point. Of course it's regarding money. However, at a certain point, it's no longer about getting an extra million because you need it, it's more about getting the extra million because you know you deserve it. That's the point Ichiro is at. He knew damn well that he was going to make a ton of cash off his next deal. At that point, it was all about seeing what "perks" would come included.
