I am struggling to find something we do good on defense. Lets see pass rush...nope doesn't exist even against the worst offensive line in the league. We can't stop the run and even when we do hit a guy he ends up falling forward for 4 yards anyway. Our pass defense may be the weakest of all because we make any QB we face look like Joe Montana. I thought for sure Harrington was going to lead miami to a touchdown on that last drive. I guess if anything we do create some turnovers but other than that we are downright dreadful. We need to find a way to get Vilma in a position to do something because right now we are wasting our best player on defense. Honestly I don't know how to fix it. Maybe the only way to get things better would be to go back to a 4-3. We could at least split between a 3-4 4-3 and then next season when we are able to getter better fits personel wise we can go back to a full out 3-4.

Sadly, I can't say I disagree with you. Although I don't think we have the worst D in the league we are definitly down there. We have a few playmakers on D who really need to step up or continue playing well. Vilma and Ellis have to start making plays while Rhodes and Dyson have to continue to play well. I truly believe that we are a few pieces away from being a good defense.

I think its the worst in the AFC without a doubt, SF's may be worse in the NFC. The unit is filled with gutless cowards who never make a play when it matters.

Well I agree that we just dont have the personell to run a 3-4 effectively. However a lot of it is the playcalling too. You're not going to get too many sacks when you only send 3 guys at the QB.

That being said we have seen a lot more 4-3 recently, but that doesn't seem to be curing anything like a lot of us thought it would.

I agree wih Riggo1. We need pressure from the line. It's that simple. Nor do I agree with sitting back and playing protection when you're up 20-3. When you play open zone, the offense makes plays. Hence, 14 points in 10 minutes. We need to be WAY more agressive on D. We need a bigger D Line with a solid BIG pass rusher.

I watched the game in very calm fashion. There was no doubt the Jets were going to win. I knew Harrington would suck when it mattered most. He was 1 of 3 for 8 yards in his final three plays. If the QB was better on that last series Mare would have attempted an easier field goal.

The Jets indeed have one of the worst defenses. The Packers, Titans, Texans, and 49ers defenses are awful, too. Right now I think the San Francisco defense is the worst of the bunch. That unit is a sieve. That wasn't a good defense last year and it is worse this year after the loss of its best player to free agency (Julian Peterson).

If anything, scores do not lie. Of course, some of the allowed scores are straight from the offensive turnover, but that the scores off the turnovers are but handful.

    And... where are we now...

    New York (A) 5 26.4 16 11 5 0 0 0 0 0 0 14 6 0 2
    Tennessee 5 27.0 16 8 7 0 0 1 0 0 0 15 8 0 0
    Green Bay 5 27.6 15 5 9 1 0 0 0 0 0 15 11 0 0
    Oakland 4 28.2 12 3 8 0 0 0 1 0 0 12 9 1 0
    Detroit 5 28.2 15 1 11 0 0 2 1 0 0 13 12 0 1
    Houston 4 28.2 13 5 8 0 0 0 0 0 0 11 8 0 0
    San Francisco 5 29.2 17 5 10 1 0 0 1 0 0 17 9 0 0

An eye-whopping 26.4 pts per game (16 of them TDs). That's 7th from the bottom.

Let's look at the run defense:

    ...

    New York (A) 5 170 34.0 743 4.4 148.6 11 42 1
    Oakland 4 155 38.8 601 3.9 150.2 3 26 3
    Tampa Bay 4 131 32.8 653 5.0 163.2 4 36 6
    Indianapolis 5 159 31.8 834 5.2 166.8 5 43 4
    Tennessee 5 182 36.4 862 4.7 172.4 8 41 8

    5th from the bottom.

    Pass defense?

    New York (A) 5 160 32.0 87 54.4 1082 216.4 5 5 9 73
    Pittsburgh 4 139 34.8 86 61.9 873 218.2 6 6 14 84
    Seattle 4 142 35.5 86 60.6 887 221.8 6 4 10 80
    New England 5 166 33.2 98 59.0 1112 222.4 4 3 12 91
    San Francisco 5 159 31.8 96 60.4 1120 224.0 10 4 13 86
    Philadelphia 5 201 40.2 118 58.7 1151 230.2 5 6 23 163
    New York (N) 4 141 35.2 88 62.4 929 232.2 8 4 5 33
    Washington 5 164 32.8 97 59.1 1183 236.6 9 2 7 31
    Arizona 5 158 31.6 95 60.1 1187 237.4 5 3 10 72
    Detroit 5 170 34.0 123 72.4 1329 265.8 11 1 6 44
    Green Bay 5 168 33.6 105 62.5 1379 275.8 9 3 14 93
    Houston 4 139 34.8 97 69.8 1181 295.2 8 1 8 43

Ok. Not as bad as the other two, but still below average at 12th. Considering that teams are not throwing as much against the Jets secondary (i.e. against Philadelphia, teams attempt about 40 throws per game, whereas they try about 32 against the Jets) we can safely assume that this secondary is tested less (why? refer to the Run Defense stat above) yet gives up more per attempt.

What is especially crippling is the 3rd down conversion ratio, where the Jets rank at 5th from the bottom with 45% success rate. (That means this defense will fail to stop the 3rd down per each two 3rd down attempt. Kick in a few 3-outs that this defense does concoct once in a while. You've got a LOOOONG drive going against it, and the defense is unable to stop it.)

    --------------------------------------------------

This defense is beyond pathetic, if I have to clarify.

We force turnovers, and we stop the pass pretty well for the most part. We don't have a great defense, but saying our defense is the worst in the league is ignorant.

I don't know about that... Yes, the Jets defense does force turn over, *+11 after this game?* but saying this defense stops pass well is a bit of an overstatement *as the stats above will testify* Also, at the end of the day, you have to check to score to see who won and who lost. Jets are resoundinlgy bad at that department too at 26.4 pts per game. This defense is atrocious. *And that's being very, VERY generous.*

That may be the best summation I've seen of this defense's character. Its like everyone's just along for the ride

The bottom line is this... out of 142 points scored against, 63 were scored in the 4th quarter.

I'm going to eliminate the Jacksonville game for a second from that statistic, because quite honestly, when you're up 34-0... you really don't need to score in the 4th.

That being said, minus Jacksonville, our 4th quarter defense has given up 60 out of 102 points.........

Now I'm going to repeat that... out of 102 points scored against us, minus Jacksonville, 60 of them were scored in 4th quarter play.

58% of all points scored against are in the 4th quarter.

You guys can assess it any way you like, place blame on whomever you like, impliment whatever you like, but the bottom line is this. You don't win football games with a D that allows 58% of all points scored to be in the 4th quarter. It kills morale, kills momentum... it just kills. Either play aggressively for 60 minutes or don't play at all!

Yeah, I was very impressed w/ the D in the 1st half. Then they just ran outta gas or somethin. They still just seem out of sync in wk 6. We're gonna need them to step up vs. DET. We should win that game but our secondary cant get burned by their receivers.

Our DL needs to stop trying to go through the OL and go around them. I swear, everytime the ball is snapped, our DE's and DT's just stand up and swat at the OL. Bryan Thomas is fast, but he never tries to go around the OL. They try to bull rush WAY too much.
