I think we got a great deal with what we paid for Jenkins. He has the size that we desperately need in the middle in order to shore up the run D. We all know that in order to run a 3-4 properly it all starts with the big man up front. So kudos to the FO for recognizing this and getting it done ASAP. The part that I disagree with is the immediate extension for huge bucks that we gave him. I can't say if we overpaid or not but the general thinking here is that it was a fair market value deal. To my knowledge, he had two years left on his deal and the amounts were both under 4 million, I think it was 2.9 and 3.9, but I may be off a bit. The question that I have to ask is what was the big rush? We pulled off a heist by trading him for those picks and getting him at those prices. Why did we feel the need to give him a blockbuster before he had even been a Jet for 24 hours let alone played a game for us, or even been to a practice. There are often talks about players performing in contract years and then shutting it down. I dont know how true this is across the board but judging by the amount you hear about it, it seems like it does happen from time to time. I hope that Jenkins does not get lazy and blow up to a weight that he cant play at, which apparently he has done in the past. I also hope that he decides that 20 million guarenteed is enough for him to play like a chump for a couple of years and get cut. The other issue that bothers me about the contract is that this guy has had injury issues in the past. A lot of people on this board are so happy with dealing Vilma cause he is not a typical 3-4 backer, coupled with his knee issues and a only one year remaining on his contract. Thats all fine and good if that what you think, but then how do we turn around and justify immediately signing a guy who has two years left on his deal to (estimating) a top 6-8 paid DT in the game with similar question marks. He has never (to my knowledge) played in a 3-4 and he has a history of injury and weight issues. I would like to hear if people think the signing was a smart move or not, do you think we should have waited to see how he played for one season and then talked extension with him next year?
You want the Jets to start playing hardball with a guy they just traded for!? Don't want the new guy to feel at home or anything.
Coles and Rhodes are reportedly in talks with the team. There's just not many reports on those because they're obviously trying to keep the talks close to their chests.
I think the terms of the trade warrant a new contract, most players get new contracts when traded....not really sure though
Coles is being a bitch about his situation. I don't think he's going to get his extra cash. Kerry Rhodes and the Jets' Front Office will eventually come to terms and sign a long term deal.
It was a very bad move and it takes the deal down a couple notches for the FO. I was extatic bc we had him for two years with no commitment and a nice price. If he was bad we could just cut him however, he would be motiviated to play hard and get the new contract. We esssentially took the carrot off the stick and just gave it to him. So not only does he not have motivation of a new contract. He he does not work, we are in the hole for 20M. Disappointing.
^He is known as a hard worker. While I liked the idea of having him for <$5 mil per year, it is nice to lock up a player for 5 years when you have to trade for him. He doesn't seem to be in the mold of a Haynesworth or Rogers, so I'm not too worried about the need for a carrot.
So we trade for a guy who was incredibly underpaid and very upset about it (one of the many reasons he wanted out of Carolina), and some people expected us NOT to give us a new deal? Great. Trade for the guy and make him pissed at the organization the first day. Brilliant management.
