Although a few on this board have been critical of some moves, I really like the jets new brain trust and their approach. 1. Out with the old--it's about time the 30 (and 40) year olds have to earn their way. No more 5 year deals to greybeards like Marvin Jones, no more benching of young stars like Cotch just because we are all supposed to love 11 year vet Chrebet, etc. and no more ancient warriors to the rescue (ala Vinny). 2. Play hardball with Pennington--A good player when healthy, but can see Terry Bradway ever reducing his contract by 7-8 million? If Bradway was still here, he'd have already paid Chad the $3M roster bonus due March 3 and we'd be that much worse in cap shape. Maybe that's why he was shown the door (as GM). 3. Martin resigning with no guarentees--A good move bringing Curtis back, but I like the announcement that he'll have to earn the right to start. Can you imagine Herman Edwards even THINKING that Martin is not the automatic starter, even at age 100? 4. Get something for Abe--Another good move. While some say it's a no-brainer, don't forget we lost Coles in 2003 when we tendered him wrong. If we keep Abe that's good too, let's just not let him get away for squat and then trade the acquired pick to get another underachiever like Robertson. Keep up the good work. My opinion only.
Cotchery... 4th round pick who hasn't done much besides run 1 kickoff back... young star? I don't think so.
If you need any proof that this is the right thing to do just look across the river at the Knicks. The Knicks should have done what the Jets did years ago instead they just keep digging a deeper hole for themselves, and are now the laughing stock of the league. I like everything Mangini and Tanenbaum have done so far and I only hope they stick to their guns on this Chad deal.
You'll be biting your tongue this season and I'll hold you to it. For some reason I feel that this guy's potential has yet to be tapped. In limited action over the course of the last few seasons he has shown good speed, very good hands (not on KR/PR) and a tenacity where it took multiple defenders to bring him down. I think that by the middle of next season Cotch is actually our #2 guy- just a hunch. McCarrins is showing us what a true waste of a 2nd round pick he was...
If he comes up big and proves me wrong, I'll be extremely happy. I think he'll be a servicable 3rd receiver, but that's about it. He gains no separation, which makes it hard for him. I think McCareins is going to have a much better season this year, but I will admit this is a make or break season for him. If I'm wrong on Cotchery, I'll be glad to admit it. I'm hoping I am wrong. Unlike most on here, it doesn't kill me to be wrong occasionally.
I have good feelings about Cotchery, too. He's shown sparks. That's what made me doubly irritated last season. We should have thrown him out there and our other 'unprovens' as much as possible once we knew the season was lost; which, in my mind, was evident at the Ravens game. Over, yo; and when you've got nothing to lose but games, show me something. Where the hell was every Joe on the freakin' PRACTICE SQUAD at that point. See whatcha got, find a diamond in rough, lose in a raging ball of flame - BUT SHOW ME SOMETHING. But that's just me.
Forget 5 year deals to old people, how about 5 year deals to anyone? I swear Bradway just had a whole bunch of numbers in a hat and pulled them out - what he pulled is for how long you were signed. Fiedler? 5 years. Legree? 5 years (I think). Blaylock? 5 years.
Actually, his hands were forced because we were in cap hell prior to 2002, because of Parcells cap abuses.
anytime Coch has gotten a ball thrown his way he has caught it. I don't know what games you guys are watching but he does a real nice job. The problem was he was never on the field other then returning kicks. The more I read Jetsin2004 posts the more I realize he is an idiot. I like the post tomdeb, I think the front office is doing a great job for our team. They don't need to let every little detail leak out.
Cotchery has played very well on special teams. Did he lead the team in special teams tackles in 2005? Well, it's now time for him to be the 3rd receiver.
