I'm standing on the corner of 47th St and Madison and on the other side of the street waiting to cross toward me was Mort. After a quick "Hey Mort" and a handshake, I decided to turn and walk his way for a couple of blocks. I mentioned to him that I used to be a true "draftnik" that would wait in line for 4 hours just to get into the Theatre at MSG, but that marriage and fatherhood has forced me to grow up....but that I would still be firmly planted in front of the TV on Saturday. He said that he was glad I hadn't completely grown up, which we both got a chuckle out of...

Since he hadn't told me to go away, change the direction he was walking, or searched for a cop and by the fact that he had just dissed me a little I figured what the hell I will ask him a couple of questions.

Question 1: Which potential 1st rounders are flying under the radar and dervere more hype then they are getting?
Mort: Offensive: Robert Meachem WR Tenn / Defensive: Darelle Revis CB - Pitt. He said that Revis could go as high as to Miami

Question 2: Any chance of the Jets trading up into the Top 15?
Mort: NO. If they had kept their other 2nd round pick yes they would have had a better shot and more people calling them, but not now. He actually said he wouldn't be surprised if "we traded down." (Which I have been a proponent of for a couple of weeks now.)

Question 3: If Blalock, Olsen, Spencer and Harrell are available at 25 where do the Jets go. He said it would be Harrell (Yes!) or Olsen (Boo!) for the Jets. But he again said "don't be surprised if the Jets go ahead and trade down"

Question 4: So is that a rumor that we are trading down?
Mort: No. No rumors, Just don't be surprised..Eric and Mike (thought it was cool he was on a first name basis with them) have been taught to think quantity on draft day and not to settle for what the masses think they should do. They think big picture not quick fix.

He then said he had to go and went into 565 5th Ave. But first he was enough of a gentleman to extend his hand for a handshake, which I thought was really cool. You will not hear anything bad from be about Mort ever again....

As I mentioned I think trading down is a great idea. I would think that if Olsen was available at #25 that Oakland would salivate for him, especially if they go ahead and draft Russell at #1. Getting Oaklands' #2 and #3 this year for our #1 (not sure if that equates out based on the value chart, but let's say it does) would mean we would have 4 picks between #33 and #65. I like that position a lot. The quantity of picks should go a long way in allow us to find quality players.

So let's get some input from all about trading down......

Trading downliness is next to godliness.

Seriously, the Jets need to build some quality depth on the team before they are ready to make their bid to unseat New England. This draft has some big bodies that would fit very well on the Jets from 33 to 65.

People who might well be available at 33 include Anthony Spencer, Justin Harrell, David Harris, Justin Blalock, Paul Posluzny, Ben Grubbs, Joe Staley and Arron Sears. It's virtually guaranteed that the Jets would get to choose between at least a couple of those guys on the 33.

dammit - if I run really quickly, I might be able to amke it over to 565 5th in, oh say, three days.

Nice story TTB. I can't believe Revis may go as high as 9, I was hoping we would get some shot at him in a trade up or something. No chance we go that high. As far as trading down, I wouldn't be opposed to it, I agree with the depth building discussed by Badwaysux..

    For reference...

    Jets: #25 (720) + #89 (145) = 865

Raiders: #33 (580) + #65 (265) #175 (21.4)= 866.4 (really, any of the teams in early round 2 match up with this well)

    Chicago: #31 (600) + #95 (120) = 720 (the Jets first pick essentially)

    Dolphins: #40 + #60 + #108 = 878 (I hate dealing with the phins and maybe this is a bit of a reach but it's close

Looking at these, there's a lot more potential trades if we manage to recoup a 4th rounder somehow...

I'd really like that because the end of the broad second round range talent pool is around the beginning of round 3, and we could still grab Blalock at 33 in all likelihood.

I've advocated trading down since we got the draw at #25. However, I would also trade up to the top 15 if we could do it with only one player and our #25.

I would love the trade down. It provides the Jets with financial flexibility (don't have to pay first round money) and would continue building the talent needed to compete for a Super Bowl. The Jets overachieved this season and are still a couple years away. Save those luxury picks when we need a playmaker in the future. Build from the ground up!

Don't fall into that trap. You will never get to the SB if you try to do it solely by building through the draft. Not anymore anyway. Teams like San Diego have tried that for years. They get close but never make it because they lose their players before they have drafted enough to make that "perfect" team that is SB ready.

Maybe one more year for the Jets adding picks is ok though.

I think one more year is ok. Just look at those damn Patsies...they finally went nuts in free agency this year to put them back over the top.

The Chicago option would be really nice. The 31 pick plus the 95 would give us probably the same guy we would take anyway on the 25 plus a bit better than the 4th round pick we are short.

I would like to pry Atlanta's 39,44 and 149(1000) away from them for our 25 and 63(996)

That'd be fantastic if at all possible. Would they maybe trade up if one of Houston or Ross are still there to address their need for a corner?

I like the Chicago possibility as well, but a trade down from 1 and a trade up in 2 lands us right in the middle of a vast pool of potential boom picks (while the bottom of round 2 likely has a lot of solid but not spectacular prospects).

That's my thought too. Two high 2s probably encompass the same pool from about 25-50. And we still keep our 59 and gain a 5th.

Looking at the potential options you guys spelled out (thanks) I'm beginning to like the idea of a trade down more and more. Frankly, I'm not big on going up, unless its for Carriker and even that I'm not sure about. I definitely prefer the idea of moving down.

Trading down is great and I would be all for it. We just need a dancing partner. I think at this spot there could be some potential suitors.

I really hope they don't take Harrell-- In the last 2 off-seasons, we've brought in Kimo, Hamilton, Mosley, Coleman, and Haynes along with some young FA guys and Titus Adams in the draft. Can we maybe see how Coleman pans out at least? We're paying him starter money, do we really have to draft his replacement already? I really hope he's wrong about this one. If they consider him after trading down 10 spots, than I can live with it, but not at 25 please.

Just another bullet to dodge on draft day.

I agree. I really like Harrell as a player, but he doesn't fit this team at this point in time with all we've invested at the position. The only way I see us grabbing him is not only if we view him as a NT, but also if Robertson's gone by draft day, which I don't see happening.

You honestly think Weddle will be there in RD3? Ive seen mocks that have him breaking into the bottom of RD1 and early RD2.
