Vilma could be in jeporday of being traded after this season. Along with Robertson's potential release. Vilma has been so unactive these first five games I sometimes forget he is even on the team. Where has he been? I understand switching schemes takes time, but the guy is supposed to be an impact player and usually those kind of guys play well in any defense or offense. Before the season began I felt strongly that Vilma would be very successful in the 3-4, but my opinion has been swayed tremendously. Not just because of todays game, but all of them as a whole. Some would argue that Vilma is still lacking the true Run Stuffing Nose tackle which is crucial to a 3-4. Others would argue he is still learning the ropes and then the rest would say he will simply never physically fit the 3-4 defense. So my question to you all is...how do you feel about Vilma? Obviously we all love him and want him to be successful, but if this keeps up I don't see any other alternative. Again, I am not saying they should ship him no questions asked, but perhaps it is something we should consider... Try not to rip my head off as I am a big fan of Vilma.
Vilma would be fine with a good NT, without one he's toast. That's just what it is. The only thing that stands between a middle/inside linebacker and oblivion is the defensive tackles in front of him. If they're getting blown out at the line of scrimmage then Dick Butkus himself couldn't do much to contain the damage. Editing to say: obviously Vilma is not in the same class as Butkus was but he is a damn good middle linebacker if he gets a chance to make plays. With 320 pounds of guard in his face that's not going to happen very often.
Vilma can't be effective with 320 lb Olinemen blocking him after they run over Drob, with an actual NT, and not a dline that is practically swiss cheese, and him getting used to the system, he will be fine, but we have to have an actual NT or we don't have a 3-4 defense
I love Vilma too, but he looks HORRIBLE! He over peruses on every play, and cant shed blocks to save his life. We have to move him outside, I started a thread about this a few weeks ago. Vilma MUST be moved outside, he's not a 3-4 ILB. He's just too small!
I think those 8-9 yard runs, as you pointed out in another thread are due to the ineffective play at NT. Vilma is not superman so he can't be expected to constantly fight off blocks and make plays. But aside from the run defense...where is he in pass coverage? Or even pass rushing? Run defense is just one facet to the defense. I haven't seen Vilma in any.
There lies the problem though buddy. The 3-4 ILB don't necessarily have to be big. The OLB's are suppsed to be a hybrid type of player between DE and LB so they can drop back in coverage and rush the passer. Vilma is NOT an OLB in the 3-4. Willie McGinest is a proto-typical 3-4 OLB as far as size goes.
Well, when you are getting your ass handed to you on first and second down because the guy in front of you cannot do his job it probably is going to cause problems in other parts of your game. The Jets don't have a lot of options at the moment and other than moving Hobson inside and making him the sacrificial lamb what are they going to do? The Jets appear to be committed to having Vilma be their defensive leader. He's got to stay inside to do that.
No he won't, he's way too small to be an ILB in the 3-4. Even if we had a real NT, Vilma would still be having problems. He's not strong enough to shed blockers and make the tackle that ILBs have to do in this defense. Move him outside please Mangini, please....
He will be fine once we get an actual NT in front of him. As people have already said, he is an undersized LB, and can't be expected to shed blocks on virtually every play. An example I kind of compare our situation to is the Ravens. Last year they had no nose tackle, and it showed. They go out and draft Haloti Ngata (at Ray Lewis') request, and now their defense is pretty much dominating all their oponents.
Some of you guys are unreal. Even though his production is down, (oh, is it?) Vilma is tied for 2nd spot in tackles in the league. Sorry guys, he will not be traded. Get relaistic.
If you move Vilma outside he's no longer the leader on the defense. It's an ILB that makes the calls and adjustments as the offense approaches the line of scrimmage because he can see the whole front. An OLB just can't do that. That's why a safety makes the calls in the defensive backfield too. It's all about field of vision.
Re-read my post buddy. I am not talking about shipping Vilma outta here with no questions asked. But it has to be of some concern when your "best" defensive player has not made a single Sack, Interception, Forced fumble and only has one fumble recovery and deflected pass. Sure he has made plenty of tackles and thats all great, but how many of those tackles can you honestly recall that made an impact? How many tackles for losses do you think the guy has? Again I am not trying to be too hard on him because I realize there is alot going against him, but it is alarming to see he hasnt made any plays at all.
Yes they do, ILBs are supposed to be big and strong, 6-2-6-4, 250-260. Look at the Pats, and the old Giants teams. In the 80s no one ran the 3-4 with anyone close to Vilma's size. Mo Lewis was a great OLB for us when Parcells was here. This hybrid DE/OLB stuff is BS, Vilma fits the mold of an ILB in the 3-4. The 3-4 is run with big ILBs, and quick smaller OLBs.
Yep. He's actually 3rd, tied for 2nd. He's silently contributing, but he's a leader on the defense. We need to either bring back the 4-3, or find a NT for the 3-4 scheme. Vilma needs room to operate, and with limited room now, he's still doing great. If he had a good NT, there's no doubt he'd be 1st in tackles.
He is on the small side but 10 lbs isn't the reason why he is ineffective, and when you have the center and guards blocking him, he isn't going to be effective, without a capable NT, Vilma will be severely limited like what would happen with any 3-4 ILB
Have you watched him play? Tackling stats are BS. Who cares if he is 2nd in tackles in the NFL. That just means that the defense is on the field alot because they cant make a damn stop.
