I raise this question because it is not totally out of the question McFadden could fall to #6............while not probable, it is possible. Clearly at #6, he would be Best Player Available; not necessarily best player for our needs. If you were picking would you have the guts to trade down or pass and go with a true need? Or would you take him? I think Miami is definitely taking Dorsey Jake Long is probably going to the Rams Unless, Atlanta trades for a QB, you would have to say Matt Ryan is here Raiders - if they are smart - either trade down or pick Chris Long Chiefs - ether trade down or get an O lineman like Clady Given this scenario - what do we do?????? I think McFadden is going to go as the #4 or #5 pick, myself, as somebody trades up, but there is a chance he could drop to us. If it were me and MacFadden was there as our pick; I would try like anything to trade down to the 8, 9, or 10 spot. Even though he would be a favorite pick, he does not fit into where the team is right now. We would only fall a couple of spots and I think we could sucker a team into giving us their second round pick; which would give us 2 high picks in the 2nd round. Lauranaitis or Gholston still could be available at 8,9, or 10. Jones and Washington are good enough; and could benefit greatly from a beast of a fullback, but not at #6 - maybe round 2 or 3. If we shore up our offensive line in FA and possibly get somebody else on D, like Suggs; it would still make the most sense to go with Lauranaitis or Gholston. I know we could watch McFaddden run roughshod over the entire NFL for years if he fell to NE at #7, but we are Jets fans and we are use to this kind of thing. What I am saying is this whole McFadden thing could be a painful memory for the Jets.
Based on Best Player Available you take McFadden. Based on need (and the Jets have many glaring needs), you would have to pass. Maybe trade down if some team wants to give up their entire first day draft picks. The Jets are just too full of holes for them to waste a draft pick on a position where they already have a capable (although unspectacular) starter.
I traded down for more picks. If he's there at #6, some other team will be foaming at the mouth to get to him and we'll wind up getting HUGE value for the pick. Besides, Jones has demonstrated that he has what it takes for now. I'd take the picks we get for the #6 and use them to get the best linesmen available, whether that be drafting them outright or using the picks as trade bait with other teams to get a Suggs, for example. After I'm totally confident I've addressed both lines with everything I've got, then, if anything's left over, I go for a good WR, another QB and maybe a FB.
Exactly my point. No sense being stacked at one position while leaving gaping holes everywhere else. It would be hard to pass up a player of his caliber though. The Jets brass would live in infamy if he went on to have a HOF career!!!
If Mcfadden is there at six I don't pick him because there has to be something seriously wrong with him to drop that far. No way the Raiders let him slip to us. If he does there is something else at play. I try to trade that pick.
uhh..the Raiders will take McFadden if he is there. Then they will have the best QB and the best RB of the last two years.
I agree 100% with this if McFadden falls to us. It's likely we could get a jackpot at the #6 pick for McFadden. Also, if we move down within only a few picks, Gholston and others who match our needs should still be there.
He also said if the raiders were smart they would trade down or take Chris Long. That's when the hypothetical went out the window and the wishful thinking blew in.
I don't know..McFadden couldn't do anything in that bowl game and I have a feeling the same can be said if he was running behind our line. I also don't like the Adrian Peterson comparisons. It looks like Adrian Peterson is going to be a great one and backs like that don't come around that often. Is McFadden really as good as Peterson? Not to mention McFaddens backup averages 9 yards a carry. Is it the O-line or the back. Very suspect to me.
Tell me who the first 5 picks are if McFadden is there. To me, right now, my priority list goes: 1. Gholston 2. Jake Long 3. Chris Long 4. Glenn Dorsey 5. Darren McFadden If McFadden is the only player on that list left, then I'll take him gladly. Or if someone wants him badly enough to trade up and give the Jets a fair deal, I'd move down.
Oakland is taking McFadden, but if he does happen to be there we can pull a hesit from Dallas. Both #1s and #3 this year and a #1 and 2/3 next year and I say do it.
Anything can happen between now and draft day, it happens every year when some guy has a great combine and rockets past the rest. But you already know that. Speaking of scenarios, remember when you were all hyped about the scenario of trading a 1st round pick for Michael Turner?
Drafting for need sucks though, and it rarely works. Mangini seems to use FA to go after the guy he thinks is the BPA. If he goes after the O-line in FA with some of the young guys like Andrews, Bell, Smiley, hell even Faneca then I definitely want McFadden.
Man, you have so nailed the reason why I look with such jaundiced eye at any top 10 pick. You always have to look at surrounding talent. A guy in a particular position on a winning team can look great amongst talented players who unselfishly enable him to look great. Take him out of that environment and put him on the '07 Jets and now imagine how well he will do. I remember a lot of posters who were screaming for Reggie Bush last year. Where would he be now behind our lousy O-line, Salary Cap issues and "Move-Up" issues not even considered?
