Lets say that the Texans take Bush at 1, the Saints take DBrick at 2, and the Titans go with Young at 3 (which I think is a bullshit smokescreen anyway). Hypothetically speaking, would you go with Leinart or Williams. Humor me and pretend there are no other options. That is, if you HAD to choose btwn ONLY Leinart or Williams at 4, who would you take? And why
I'm taking Mario Williams because we need his pass rush more than we need a QB... we got 2 qb's on the roster that can start and win games for this team.... Mario Williams would be my pick there.
If Matt Leinart falls we better take him or trade the pick. IMO Leinart is the only QB that can be labeled as a "franchise" QB in this draft and needs to be taken if he falls to 4.
Id probably go with Leinart. IMO the most important piece to an offense, or a team in general, is the QB. People only gripe about Leinart seems to be his arm strength but I dont think these people have ever seen him play. He cant toss it out of the stadium, but he can toss it a good 60 yards at least. Coming out of college, both Peyton Manning and Tom Brady were labeled as having the same type of arm strength as Leinart...not a bomb, but certainly more than adequate. When you pick this low in the draft, you hope to God it never happens again, and take advantage and pick your franchise signal caller. Leinart is the only franchise QB IMO in this draft, and what a prospect he is indeed. People's only knock on him should be whether he can succeed without the multitude of talent around him that he had at USC. I think he can, but if anyone disagrees, theres a simple solution...SURROUND HIM WITH TALENT!!! I say go with Leinart this year, and make the oline the #2 priority. Then next year, we surround him with playmakers at receiver and RB. He sits this year and dominates next year...its as simple as that
In a 34 any pass rush comes primarily from the LBs...the 3 dlinemen just need to hold their gaps and allow the LBs to run to the ball. The LBs are the stars in this system, not the line (although certainly it dosent hurt if you have some allpros up front)
I would take Mario. I am a believer that you do not need a franchise QB to be successful. A game manager will be more than sufficient if given a strong running game and defense. Also - DE's are more than capable of racking up sacks in the 3-4. Ellis had 9 his rookie season playing the 3-4.
I'll take Mario. His ability to play in either the 34 or 43 will give Mangini the flexibility to change up fronts. Since losing JAbe I don't see the Jets having much of a pass rush in a 43 scheme. Mario will be able to provide both pass rush ability in a 43 and anchor in 34.
TAKE DBRICK we dont need mario williams and we arent going to get leinart at #4. i mean dont get me wrong, we'd have such a kickass lnebacking corps with mario, but we need offense more than anything
I can't believe 11 people would take Mario over Leinart. QB is arguably our greatest need and this draft is so deep at DE. Leinart is one of the best QB prospects to come along in a while and if we are in position to draft him, especially without having to trade up, there's no question we have to grab him. I don't even think that we should go DE in the draft until round 3 unless a can't miss prospect slips to 29 or 35. I wouldn't be able to forgive the Jets if we passed on Leinart for Mario.
I don't like Leinart as much as I once did, and I continue to like Mario more and more. Mario would be the BPA in that scenario, so I would have to take him.
Leinarts arm strength isnt enough to get through the meadowland winds... and he has no mobillity so scramble behind our o-line (reminds me a lot of Pennington). If we draft a QB it should be Cutler after trading down to about 10. Mario Williams at four would give the most impact to our team
Yes in a 3-4 the pass rush comes primarily from the LB's but Mario is such a beast he will get heat on the QB from the DE spot...... I also can see Mangini putting him at LB for some plays with his pass rushing ability.
